The Jacobs 6A-33 Medium Duty Chuck was a very popular choice for makers of drill presses. Makers like Rockwell, Craftsman, Delta, Milwaukee and others installed this on their benchtop drill presses. And the 6A-33 has a large capacity range from nearly... bit.ly/35fiXHl
zero to 1/2" this chuck could handle a wide range of drill shanks. Our research into new spare parts has come up with a big zero, but with some care and effort a stuck, sticky or bit-dropping chuck can almost always be rebuilt. Some hurdles exist, but with a modest set of tools, cleaning & grease you can rebuild this chuck and enjoy they way it was intended by the original maker.

That's awesome! I've been around chucks all my life, went to machinist classes & never knew what was inside or how to disassemble & service them. Now I do, thanks! Stan from Shadon KTW(?) sent me to your site.

Useful video,…it’s a good idea to let the chuck soak in white spirits for a few days to soften any hardened grease etc, and makes cleaning so much easier…if you can’t split the chuck from the arbor, you can drill through the chuck until you hit the arbor, then use a steel punch to knock them apart… I clean all the parts using a circular brush in a bench grinder, which removes any solid stuck on grease etc, then a wash in white spirits… I never use grease on any drill or lathe chucks, as it just acts as a magnet for dust and metal chips, a regular light oil like 3in one works perfectly well and in my 50 years of working with them, I’ve never had any problems, apart from having to service old chucks that have previously lubricated with all types of grease which basically eventually clogs the mechanism and prevents easy operation

John-nice to hear from you and thanks for watching. Yes-grease does attract debris and can become the problem. Your 3in1 lubrication plan with frequent maintenance sounds like a winner. Thanks for sharing it with us all.

Timeless information. Thank you. I just aquired a Craftsman 150 drill press with this chuck and it needed replacement. But i pressed it apart and will clean and rebuild. Saved me $$ too! Use a 1 3/4" open end wrench for my press ring.

Thank you. I watch a locksmith that has a little carved out tray to keep all of the parts in the correct order. Something like that for chucks would be handy for you.

Thanks for this video, just overhauled my same chuck as video, for my bench DP220. I have the whole DP apart for restoration. Could not get the chuck off the taper but didn't need to and just left it on the taper and disassembled it by tapping with a hammer, came apart easily. Looks like brand new now. You stuck a screwdriver and rag in there, I used a large caliber bore cleaning bristle for the jaw holes, worked like a champ!

Very handy video, I have a 1950ish Delta DP-400 and the bit wiggles a little also the chuch was hard to turn. I followed this, I found a little burr on 1 jaw, sadly it hasn't solved the wiggle but the chuck is much easier to turn now.

To add, I couldn't get my chuck off so I dropped the shaft and worked it from there.

How do you remove the chuck? I tried a pair of wedges, didn't succeed, but may have been too afraid to use enough force. My machine is a Delta DP220 and looks pretty much identical to yours. Same 6A-33jt chuck. I need to find a new starter capacitor, too. Thanks for the video.

There are sometimes an extra sleeve or depth control right above the chuck. Just take it off so you can clearly see where to put the wedges. Good lighting, and clean surface help you see where to attack the arbor with wedges. Also make sure the wedges are not hanging up on anything. Give it a good tap. Leave wedges in overnight and add some penetrating oil. Let me know how it goes - you are close.

I have a 6A, looking for a kit, found a U6 but it only lists as fitting 6 and 6B. Does a U6 kit fit 6A anyway?
@EvolventDesign
@EvolventDesign 2 жыл бұрын
Yes it will. The U6 kit contains the jaws and the nut.

Question, does the 6A-33 chuck have a hollow hole through the center of the chuck. I suspect someone has glued my chuck onto the shaft so I would like to drive the shaft out with a punch but not sure if the center of the open jaws is the tip of the shaft. Can you advise?
@EvolventDesign
@EvolventDesign 2 жыл бұрын
The one that I show in this rebuild does NOT have a thru hole. You cannot go through the jaws and tap out the tapered shaft in the back. You would need to drill it out first. A good inspection with a flashlight and you should be able to see it. - Better yet, get your smartphone and take a quick video in there and you should be able to diagnose it. Good question.

Does anyone know what size taper this takes? (ie, jt 2-1/2)
@dannyl2598
@dannyl2598 2 жыл бұрын
I'm guessing the JT is Jacob's taper but I have never seen a 2 1/2. Most of what I see is #3. Please know that I am just a novice, not an authority by any stretch of the imagination.
