The polishing process - the icing on the cake of any manufacturing job. Important for many reasons! Presentation/impact and also, it will reflect the quality of your work.
We’re using Damia’s 18ct rose gold, opal and diamond ring as an example. It’s not too scratched but I tried to demonstrate how I would go about polishing a piece like this.
Thanks for bearing with us the last couple of weeks and THANK YOU for being a part of this community. We recently hit 8000 subscribers and we are blown away. At 10000 we are going to do a giveaway or something along those lines for the channel.
We will do a follow up video on the principles of polishing - the ones I am guided by when polishing any piece of jewellery. But for now, enjoy this video - I hope it helps or at least serves as something easy and interesting to watch wherever you are in the world.
Did you enjoy this video? We do more like them! We post educational videos every week - why not subscribe and turn on notifications so you never miss a beat?

Hiya, and thank you both for a great video. Yes, please, to the list of what is safe in the ultrasonic and what is not. There are very few reference works showing anything like this, so any lists showing anything that will help us not damage our work would be great. Stay safe, Steve.

Thank you for this! As a hobby jeweler polishing has been one of my biggest hurdles and this video demystified it tremendously.

Could you make a video about the different types of mops? Stitched, felt, etc, and what each is best for? Also, love the ring, and the detail below the setting - how did you make it?

We’ve started talking about this as a result of your comment and we’ll be doing a video about the different mops soon! Thank you. Also, I made this one years ago for my daughter - but we didn’t record it. We’ll be looking at clusters in the future for sure - this particular ring was very special… 18ct rose gold, opal with diamonds.

That steam machine had me worried for a second, I've always wondered if you can use one of them with opal

Hi, I bought a gold pendant (mase custom for me) when I received it- it had already so many scratches on it is this normal? or did the jeweler not polish it correctly? Is this something that can be fixed without polishing away the engraving that is on the pendant?
@jacothejeweller
@jacothejeweller Ай бұрын
Hi, that sounds like it can definitely be polished out but it’s hard to tell without seeing it. I don’t personally let jewellery go without making sure that there are no marks on the surface but everyone has their own thing. I would raise the issue with your jeweller and see how they can help out. Good luck 👍🏻

When I polish I only go straight to the polish machine and it's faster with a decent bright.

I find that I’m better able to preserve the detail in the work when I ‘pre-polish’ and refine as I go along. 😊

These are available here in the UK and I’ve also used them in South Africa - have a look at your local jewellery tool supply - I’m sure they will have something similar

How much gold is lost during the process of sanding and polishing?
@jacothejeweller
@jacothejeweller Жыл бұрын
I aim for under 10% for making an item from scratch - so the sanding would be a very small fraction. But still, over polishing of customer gold can reduce the weight over time so I’d encourage not to polish the same piece more than twice a year to extend longevity.

Polishing is effective but you lose up to a gram 😢

Ohh. That sounds like a lot. More sanding with finer paper will at least mean that your gold stays on the premises.

Wrong. Your exaggating. You lose but not nearly .5 gram.
