1968 hörte ich Loussier zum ersten Mal. Und heute: Seine Interpretationen beeindrucken mich immer noch unglaublich! Zeitlos, Bach hätte seine Freude!

Je connais et apprécie la musique de Jacques Lousier depuis 1963 (j'avais 13 ans) date de sa première série d'enregistrements des "Play Bach" chez DECCA avec Pierre Michelot et Christian Garros. Je ne comprends pas pourquoi en 50 années, Jacques Loussier (son trio a changé depuis) n'a pas été plus écouté, plus programmé dans les radios, les télés, reconnu comme un des plus grand Jazzman de son temps, un pionnier en son genre.

The Jacques Loussier treatments of Bach are always a great pleasure to hear. Thank you for posting. A unique sound and wonderful piano technique. I saw them live in concert as a young man. Astounding.

Beaucoup s'imaginent peut-être qu'il suffit de suivre Bach à la lettre, de s'en écarter et d'y revenir comme un train qui avance sur des voies parallèles avec un jeu d'aiguillages, ou à la rigueur, d'être un bon interprète... Que tout le mérite reviendrait finalement à Bach? Ce serait désespérant!

He escuchado muchas formas de interpretar las Variaciones Goldberg. Habia escuchado una versión jazistica. Pero esta versión esta muy bien aunque mantiene el clasicismo de la pieza. Muchas felicidades.

Je connais également Jacques Loussier depuis les années 60 et trouve que le mariage qu'il a un jour organisé entre JCB et le jazz est purement merveilleux. Cette musique me transporte avec un plaisir extrème

Entièrement d'accord avec vous, Claude. Je l'ai entendu pour la première fois quand j'étais encore en Angleterre (à l'age de 13 ans aussi!) et j'étais stupéfaite par la beauté de ses interprétations.

There must have been something in French water from that period. Loussier, Claude Bolling and even Michel Legrand all seem to have a similar approach, combining classical and jazz together from the piano and in their compositions.

The Goldberg Variations are not complete without Glenn Gould humming and moaning in the background. He could have done some scat humming on this jazz version!

Listening to Gould humming and moaning as you quite rightly said, put me off listening to the work for over 20 years. But what a pianist he was!!

@@ralphmace5494 We hosted Jacques for many performances at the Purchase PAC, always a playful dazzling experience! For a traditional performance Garrick Ohlson gave the most powerful performance at the end of a Goldberg Weekend featuring The NY Ballet etc When all the jaded Union Stagehands give you a standing ovation you know you have accomplished something!

To Geo - I think you are being a bit harsh. I love Bach and I love jazz. I could not play like this if I practised all day. I appreciate all the talent that is displayed in both composer and performers. To Claude (my high school French is a bit rusty but I think I undestand), fortunately for me, ABC Classic FM here in Australia played some Jacques Loussier on the radio while I was listening and I have been hooked ever since.

This version makes an image like Gould playings. Gould have created new version for Goldberg

Yes, a hideous one. If Bach thought humming and groaning while playing it was ok, I'm sure he would have included it in the original score!

Definitively delightful.3 observations. The "usual" way of Loussier's "jazz-Bach" is particularly adapted to the Goldberg variations : the theme becomes as a "standard" in jazz. The 3rd variations( from Bach) is, for me, the best : slight changes of harmonies getting the tune more melancholic. Just a slight negative note : except in the first (from Bach) variations. Loussier erases the bass part (left hand) ; result : he erases the counter-song coming from the piano's bass (from Bach's score)

Je vois deux raisons ; la première (la plus triste) dans notre pays d'étiquettes et de clichés, il fut rejeté à la fois du monde du jazz et du classique. la deuxième : passé l'originalité de ses premières reprises, force est de reconnaitre qu'il a toujours insisté dans cette voix assez étroite. Je ne dis pas que ce n'est pas formidable ce qu'il joue, mais ça reste sur les années toujours un peu pareil (y compris harmoniquement), ce qui ne pousse pas au succès commercial.

I know this interpretation of Bach's Music by JL since I was a child. It was one of our family's sunday favourites. And I must say: This is like blowing away the dust from a music that is really timeless and revealing its innermost rhythm. I never buy classical Bach interpretations, that don't have this inner swing. It is like a natural heartbeat, as if Bach's music was floating and running easily like a creek (in german "Bach"). This is, what JL gave Bach's music in his very special way and thank's to him for that courage.
