Can't agree with Pernell on the Chavez fight, though I accept mine is a minority view. I rate Whitaker very highly but he was allowed to get away with a lot of spoiling against Chavez. Benton said he told Meldrick Taylor to hit Chavez on the hips to disrupt his rhythm in their fight in 1990 and for sure his gameplan with Pernell was along similar lines, difference being Whitaker was a brilliant defensive fighter and naturally awkward. He was a nightmare to fight, particularly for a precise well-balanced combination puncher like Chavez. The idea put across by many, including the commentators and most the print media that Whitaker outfought Chavez is laughable. The plan was to irritate, frustrate, foul and keep him from getting set. It worked. And let's be honest here that he is fouling, a lot. I'm not talking about the low blows that Chavez always gets dogged on by the announcers (yes, he does hit low) - though Whitaker lands plenty of them here - but the excessive crouching so his head at times is level with Chavez' waistband, and also the holding and wrestling, sometimes maneuvering himself so he's behind Chavez. It's ridiculous. 50% of Whitaker's game in this fight is was is called "spoiling", when lesser fighters do it. I watched this fight live and it was incredibly disappointing - the fight to determine P4P no.1 did not live up to its billing. And that wasn't just down to the "bad" verdict or Chavez looking far from his usual invincible self, it was Whitaker's tactics. They were effective, no doubt but he shouldn't have been allowed to get away with some of the stuff he was pulling in there. Yes, Chavez cut a frustrated figure and was out of ideas by the middle rounds but he was there to fight, if it was left up to him. Whitaker was the guy who turned the Leonard - Duran of the 90s into a underwhelming spectacle.

Sweetpea had incredible hand speed but Chavez had the ability to fight up close and dodge the majority of punches with great head movement and excellent parrying. Pay close attention to Sweetpea's punches and you'll see that the majority of them miss. Still, Sweetpea is a Hall of Famer and a legend for good reason.

Pete was amazing, but he is not the best defensive with under 50 bouts in the 12Rounds era compared to 229 wins of Mr. Pep. He is still very arrogant for not putting Willie Pep’s wizardry accurately ahead of his own [ as Ray Leonard does with saying there is no comparison between him and Ray Robinson ]. That is humility! To recognize and to honour the obvious. People who are disillusioned by Mr. Duva are un-researched. Goerge Benton did the work and was never credited until Evander [Holyfield] and Pernell confesses thereof. More specifically, Archie Moore knocked out a lot of men that were dangerous and some had him beat and or previously beaten him, but many a times he came from the brink of destruction to win. The frequency of bouts, duration, caliber and hunger then we’re monstrous. The irony is, he manages to secure one of the highest KO ratios ever throughout an illustrious career. That requires discipline, brilliance and with a punch, alongside an unappreciated defense. The same for SRR and Henry Armstrong’s career, having amassed so many wins through battle tested resilience are accredited to defense as well. Mr. Whitaker came along with color TV and although did make adversaries miss, his bouts and feats takes away from the black and white reels [ and because it was long ago ], but nonetheless are unequivocally non comparable. By and large, people utterly misconstrue knockout with entirely being offensive.

Much love to Sweat Pea. Now before I say what I came to say, I want you all to know that Sweat Pea was one of my favorite boxers ever. In fact, when I boxed amateur, idk if it was because I liked him so much or it was natural for me, but my style was almost a mirror image of his. At the same time, my favorite was Chávez. Well I scored the fight a draw. Maybe my bias played a part, idk. Now, on to what I came to say: Why in the fuck does EVERYONE never let go the controversy of Chavez - Whitaker yet are quick to accept when American fighters are handed controversial decisions.... either over other Americans or foreigners, and act like all their victories were absolute!?!? Leonard - Hagler..... many though Leonard was robbed but that NEVER comes up! Whitaker vs Wilfredo Rivera...... oh people like to forget how clearly Rivera was robbed huh! Mayweather -Castillo 1..... close fight that many felt Castillo won, but nobody pulls that back into conversations! Many more! But for some reason, Whitaker draws and maybe wins against a foreigner considered to be the best, and “let’s bring that shit up EVERYTIME and ignore the decision like we never do other times, and call it a Whitaker win!” 🤦♂️
