This was the first celebrity death I’ve ever been heart broken over. I studied Pernell everyday. Everytime I came home from the boxing gym I’d play his fights in slow motion mimicking his style and footwork. The boxing world lost a real one today.

Pernell was robbed a couple times for sure. But easily the best defensive Boxer I have ever seen. Roy Jones Jr opinion is respected by anyone who knows Boxing.

The term defensive boxer should not be said, pernell whittaker was one of the greatest ever, and floyd except one fight never got rewarded by a gift decision, oscar has canelo, just remember one judge had it a draw during thr fight against floyd 😂

@JRLM Would you elaborate on what that’s supposed to mean? You’re not suggesting Pernell and Floyd had a similar style are you? For, their styles were absolutely nothing alike. Do not compare Whitaker to Floyd Mayweather. I’m a fan of Mayweather. I absolutely despise Whitaker. But, Mayweather doesn’t even belong in the same breath as Whitaker when it comes to being a fighter and a champion and skills. Saying Mayweather fought comparitably to Whitaker is like saying Whitaker’s business savvy was comparitable to Mayweather. Whitaker was an old school fighter that would’ve fit comfortably in Boxing’s Golden Age. Mayweather is very very VERY modern day. Whitaker would make Floyd look the way Floyd makes these kids today look. Only Whitaker was cold as ice. Whitaker had a killer instinct. Floyd is content relying on judges because he knows he’s the cash cow. He understands the business. Whitaker was never the cash cow a day of his life. He understood that as well. Even when Whitaker was P4P #1 after the draw with Chavez that was internationally considered a win-he still was never a cash cow for a single day. There were a couple reasons but I won’t get into that. Back to my point-Floyd Mayweather (whom I like as a fighter) wouldn’t make a good pimple on Pernell Whitaker’s (whom I disdain) ass in the skill and ability department. Whitaker = legit great. Mayweather = con man/modern day champion. And the best ever at it.

Pernell Whitaker was one of the best pound fo pound boxers bar none. Like RJJ said Pernell didn't duck or dodge or run from any boxer. Im glad RJJ mentioned that because that needs to be a distinction that separates the real from the fake!

Roy was qualified to speak about Pernell. It's true, back then you had to fight the best. Now you can duck fighters for seven years until you see them slow down and people will call you the best ever. That's why Pernell is better than most of the boxers we esteem as great because of their record. Fighting contemporaries in their prime is a huge factor in that.

RIP CHAMP!! Roy Jones is telling the truth!! Pernell Whitaker didn't care who he had to fight. He fought! Man, I met him twice in the nineties. The first time was at the first Holyfield-Bowe fight. The second time was in Texas. Both times he was genuinely friendly and approachable. Prayers to his family. We'll miss you Champ!!

When my Uncle returned of winning the gold in 84, he came home yet he brought the entire 84 team to the house, now as a kid U have know clue how major that is, yet years later I realize that My Uncle didn't belong just to the family he was World Figure!!! I'm from Norfolk and Pernell (pete) Whitaker was a friend of my oldest son. When he was a young teenager boxing in the local gyms ,fans use cheer sweet Pete. Once he started getting national recognition the mass media mistakenly started calling him sweet pea and it stuck. My son who now lives in Las Vegas, along with his friends from the Young Park project (now called Young Terrace) still call him Pete or sweeti Pete. Bruce Smith who played with the Buffalo bills and Washington Redskins was also a good friend of Pete . They grew up in the projects about 2 blocks apart. Bruce broke down and cried at the funeral before he finished his speech. The only other time I've seen him like that was when his father died and years later at his mother Annie's funeral.

Had chance to be in his presents 2012. When he trained Zab Judah for the Amir Khan fight at The Hit Factory... Those in Las Vegas know the gym.. Devin Haney gym I think he was 12 when met him... Sweet Pea O.G. Legend in the game R.I.P.
