In this video I detail how to fit a snorkel sock or snorkel prefilter to the ram head Safari snorkel on my 200 Series Toyota Landcruiser. I have been running snorkel socks for several years now and I rate them highly with a couple of caveats that I explain in the video. There are two main oiled filter element types on the market and I have used both and share with you my thoughts on each.
A word of caution:
Any prefilter or sock can restrict airflow to your engine. Be sure to change or clean them regularly, don't let laziness beat you here as it is important to have free air flow.

I fitted a cyclonic head filter (as are seen on many heavy construction vehicles). Filters out all bugs, sand and grit and takes 30 seconds to clean. Take the standard head off and fit the cyclone head back on. Most importantly it does not restrict airflow in any way. It’s also easy to see when it needs cleaning. Great video Terry!

Hello again. We use Donaldson pre-cleaner bowl units on our Safari snorkels. You can get 6 inch and 10 inch. It doesn't matter which size you choose. The important tip is to paint the exterior of the plastic bowl in black paint and then run cloth tape around the entire outside circumference of the bowl so it stops rocks from trucks and wankers in caravans casting stones into the bowl and cracking it. You can of course get a steel bowl but we just use paint and cloth/duct tape which stops the cracks from flying stones. It is a myth that they stop the engine from getting air. Every day you just unscrew the wing nut on top and empty the bowl. You may need a spacer on the 200 Safari snorkel to match the diameter of the pipe and the head. If you head down this route then make sure you get authentic Donaldson. Even on the worst corrugations the wing nuts don't come undone. No oil, no disposable filter units - just empty it out. They work well. In fact, they work so well that you have to religiously check them every day because they pull 99% of the dirt out of the air. I recommend this way of pre filtering.

Good feedback mate, I had Donaldson’s on all the fire trucks when I was in the fire brigade. Worked great, just looks ugly. I’ll stick with my oiled pre cleaner and oiled main filter, they both work well and zero dusting. Cheers👍😎

Hold on Terry.. Different opinion this side of the Ocean! The sock to be used only dry to keep the bugs out. No oil… clogged to fast in Bull dust For Bull dust and rain use the Donaldson big cyclon filter, keeps out booth. Normal highway driving with sock Tight spaces and brushland, take the dry sock off and put it away. Just my way of handling the bug, dust, rain and ripp off issue. Keep the sunny side up. Cheers

Hi Holger, good stuff mate, I’m glad you have voiced a different position, that’s cool. I disagree however, and that disagreement comes from personal experience in real world bull dust conditions over multiple trips. You will note in my video I stipulated that the filter needs to be changed often AND you should not be driving in the dusty wake of someone else. In these conditions, I have found the filters last 1 to 2 days of usage before you have to swap them out. I’m sold on this method, and my stringent management of my air intake system ensures I have no clogging issues. I suspect if you did not manage to this strict level, you would indeed have issues. Keep the shiny side up mate, cheers😎👍

Ive used the Donaldson bowls for years very successfully, when i went from the Patrol to the 200 the only option was to use the socks on the airmax. Now Donaldson have released a unit that suits Ive bought one. In my opinion just a great solution and far easier to maintain. I also use the foam filter in the air box and have had no dust by pass. Thanks for another excellent video. Out of curiosity what camera set up are you using?

Hey Terry, thanks for another great video. Putting a Safari snorkel on my 200 soon so this will be added also. One thing I noticed was you installed the rubber L piece to reduce dust bypassing the new filter but those 4 slots in the bottom of the snorkel is for draining rain water I gather, there was dust inside this area. Having this sock is a great idea but those 4 slots could allow dust to bypass the new head filter. Your thoughts on this would be appreciated. thanks Mate.
@JafffaAdventures
@JafffaAdventures 2 жыл бұрын
You are absolutely correct Paul, dust could and probably does get past the slots. Having said that, the filter will get most of it and what it does not that’s your main elements job. As I noted in the video, if your goal is to extend your service intervals of the main filter by doing this mod, I would not do it. Have a great weekend mate, cheers😎👍

I have a turf terrain metal snorkel fitted.......did 12,000km Sydney....Townsville....Mt Isa....then various across the top.....Darwin, Kununurra, Halls Creek, Wolfe Creek, Tanami Rd, Alice Springs, Plenty Hwy back across to Townsville, and lots of points in between, over about 8 weeks ......not towing, just swag and everything by ear, with my brother last year......long story short, and finally a point....just used a paper filter, checked occasionally, barely dirty. I put it down to the rear facing intake....as opposed to the so called ram head, might be wrong. Anyway, no problems. I do have a sock, but I probably won't bother. So, intake direction may be important? Good info. Cheers

Thx Terry Interesting trolling the internet and there is certainly plenty of yes & no opinions on a ‘socks’ usefulness. Yours has come from plenty of real world experience 👍 I am wondering if a ‘grandpa spec’ cyclone head is the way to go? …just a few q’s 😁😁😁 - have you noticed any change in performance as the filter starts to clog up with crap - what was the aerosol you used to add oil - and what do you carry to clean them Luv all these ‘educational’ vlogs you upload Cheers
@JafffaAdventures
@JafffaAdventures 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks mate, I really do appreciate your feedback and questions. I have heard really good things about the “grandpa spec” cyclone heads but have never used them myself. I would say their big advantage is that they do not clog like the oiled foam elements do. I have not noticed a decrease in engine performance BUT I change them VERY regularly. I would think if you pushed the envelope if would definitely affect the engine, modern cars may even throw codes. The aerosol can is simply a pressure can version of the filter oil. You can get it at most auto parts stores. The filter aqueous cleaning fluid is the same, just in a pump pack not a pressure pack. Thanks for watching and commenting mate, I sincerely appreciate it 😎👍

Have you had a look at the centrifugal bowl filters that sit on the snorkel? I've fitted one to the Armax snorkel on my 200. Picks up a lot of dirt and insects that can't get to the filter.. Pro: very easy to clean, a wing nut releases the lid. Seems very effective. No filter to change. Minus: a bit dear at $250 odd. Makes a bit of noise if your window is down.

Good clear video as usual, informative and based on real use experience. Quick question regarding the use of the filter oil? The Air on Board web site doesn't mention the use of the filter oil, is this just extra precaution on your part based on conditions off road?
@JafffaAdventures
@JafffaAdventures 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the kind words Roy, I really do appreciate it. Without the oil they basically keep birds and small children out, you really need the oil if you want to capture fine dust. I’m not sure why AOB does not mention this. Just be aware, oiled they work 10x more efficiently with the downside being that you have to change them more frequently. Failure to do this could lead to air starvation and all that accompanies that (runs rich, loss of power, possible a code thrown on more modern cars). Having said all of that, I change mine regularly (daily in really dusty conditions) and never had any of these eventualities. Keep the shiny side up mate and have a great weekend. Cheers😎👍

Hi Terry, I have the Safari Armax snorkel which has the 4-inch head, I just fitted the AOB filter system just like yours there is a couple problem I found, the frame contour doesn't match the snorkel head the top and bottom fit's fine but the corners have a gap of 5mm to 10mm, I contacted AOB about this they told me to silicone the gaps up all good now. I now have a loud whistling noise coming from the snorkel head do you have the same problem, it's annoying it comes in from 20km hour on, do you have any noise coming from yours. Love your channel seeing the itech 120 lithium battery under bonnet install I did the same thing love it cheers les

Thanks for reaching out and sharing your experience Les, I really do appreciate it. That’s pretty disappointing re the gaps you had, I experienced none of that. I wonder if that rubber L channel I used would have worked in your instance? At least you have it sorted now. The only whistle sound I have is when the turbos spool up but that is RPM dependant not speed dependant. There is no whistling from wind noise but I have heard of others complain about this (with and without the AOB filter). I’m glad your lithium worked well mate, I has been an absolute game changer for me. Thanks for watching Les, I very much appreciate it 😎👍

Good question mate. It has not missed a beat and I don’t expect it will. I am aware of the Rhino rack debacle over the last few months re it’s on road and off road rating. While I admit Rhinorack handled the whole situation abysmally, I believe it remains a quality product. That coupled with the fact that they weigh is spread about as evenly as you could get in any roof rack situation leads me to my conclusion. Cheers 😎👍
