The Jagdpanzer IV, was a German tank destroyer based on the Panzer IV chassis and built in
three main variants.
It was developed as a replacement for the Sturmgeschutz III.
Officially only the L/48-armed vehicle was named Jagdpanzer IV and the L/70-armed
vehicle was named Panzer IV/70.
The Jagdpanzer IV served in the anti-tank sections of Panzer and SS Panzer Divisions.
These vehicles saw service in Normandy, the Battle of the Bulge and on the Eastern Front.
They were very successful tank destroyers but performed poorly when used out
of role as substitutes for tanks or assault guns.
It was also a needless vehicle, because the Sturmgeschutz III and IV were still more them
adequate for their role. and in some reports preformed even better then the Jagdpanzer IV.
Despite all the downsides of the vehicle there were still 2000 produced at the end of the war.
The Jagdpanzer IV/70 (A) was developed to speed up production of the Jagdpanzer IV, the design was copied from earlier German attempts to place the 7.5 cm L/70 into a Panzer IV turret.
The vehicle had a modified hull and it was placed on a standard Panzer IV tank chassis.
The upper nose plate was 60mm thick instead of the original 50mm thick vertical plate.
In addition the interior layout was changed.
The result was a much taller and heavier vehicle than the Panzer IV/70 (V) and they failed to speed up
the production whatsoever and at the end of the
war they only produced 278 vehicles.

Great to see damage and what thickness the armor is. Even the welds broke loose. Stay safe.

Very rare and only survivor of this type. It has type 7 heavy duty type track link and rare late war simplified return roller mount.

Amazing vehicle, especially the cracked armour plate! I hope to get to Samur myself some day.

Clearly, the late war armour plate seems too brittle, as seen by the long cracks.

This Jagdpanzer was made at the Steyr-Daimler-Puch AG, Nibelungen, Sankt Valentin, Austria in 1944-5. It was knocked out and then captured by troops of the 3th DIA, December 1944, at Vosges in France, it was then used by Free French Forces. This is the only surviving Jagdpanzer of this model left in the world, It has some shell holes in the right-hand side of its front plate and there is still one lodged in the hull. Note: the undetonated shell still stuck in the front armor plate.

Seems like I read that cracked armor was an indication of the low nickel content of late war German armor.

I never knew why they built this jag panzer the 4 with the L48 gun was doing the job and the panther gun it used was better no doubt but the jag panther was built at the same time I think with the L71 88mm gun

A very interesting walkaround of the Jagdpanzer IV/ 70(A) but it has a strange history as the US troops claimed to knock it bazooka but in reality it was the Sherman or Shermans that really closed up but I find it very curious that it was used afterwards by the French troops all cracked up at the front with a shell still logged at the front. It only demonstrated how really though the armour at was at the front....

Is the shell still live ? Would the front of shell be sticking all the way thru the armor and could they have diffused the ordinance that way ? I'm not familiar with the procedures but would seem like a liability for the museum especially since it almost seemed like you could have kneeled on the shell to get those top view camera shots . Just curious and I like the walk-around series. Thumbs-up
