I'd assume most of this audience is an Android user, but just a quick note on jailbreaking to clear up some confusion. First, jailbreaking does void your warranty on your device, but a simple restore of iOS will remove all traces of a jailbreak. So if for instance you need to bring your device in to Apple for whatever reason, restore your device first and they'll never know it was jailbroken to begin with and it'll still be under warranty. Second, "bricking" your iPhone can sound misleading to some as it doesn't make your device unusable forever. The only thing that an iPhone will do in terms of "bricking" is go into a boot loop. This can usually be resolved with a simple solution of booting into safe mode and uninstalling a bad tweak. If for whatever reason you're still having problems, a restore will fix it.

iTwe4kz Good advice for iPhone users not familiar with this, but Bricking an iDevice is irrecoverable. Your description is regarding bootlooping, and although proper bricking is virtually impossible now if you follow good advice and instructions, bricking can still happen when dealing with more advanced tweaks and especially older phones (eg, iPhone 4/4S). Otherwise, definately need to decrease the barrier for entry into jailbreaking, and good job clearing it up!

Legal or not it's my device that I bought with my own money, and it's mine to do whatever the hell I want with it, again, as long as I'm not using it for anything else that is illegal. Remember the Geohot incident where Sony went after a man who was able to put Linux on the most recent PS3 firmware which removed that capability? Even though it was against SCE's Terms of Service, it is practically unenforceable.

To be fair, rooting can't be compared to the jail breaking. Android devices already allow full access to the filesystem, customization and allow for 3rd party software to be installed from any kind of app stores or even directly from the apk. Root is required when you need to access and/or modify parts of the OS itself as doing so can easily brick your device and this shouldn't be done by general users. What's also different is the company's attitude toward this unlocking: while Apple is really anal about it, Google is simply "Meh, whatever. Just don't come crying to us if your device breaks".
@jonoc5
@jonoc5 9 жыл бұрын
Nemo Nekoi Err they absolutely can be compared. They both change the way the user interacts with the OS by removing restrictions from the manufacturer.
@sethpandah8049

Nemo Nekoi I like how you described Google about it. Even though I hate Google with a passion (wow, I'm using KZfaq, the irony right? xD) I've always thought that Google was much more casual about it. Apple with jailbreaking seems ridiculously harsh, and the whole filesystem lock ups are down-right retarded.

Vihan Bhargava he's talking about apples vs androids approach to the whole thing. Apple is a complete dbag about the whole thing, while Google basically says "do what you want, but if you fuck up, your choice." I'd say Google is far more respectable.

Hard-bricking an Android device is actually extremely hard to do. Sure there can be the occasional soft-brick, but that's easily recoverable if you have a recovery such as ClockworkMod, TWRP, or Safestrap for AT&T and Verizon users, like myself, due to their bootloaders. A hard brick I believe messes with the motherboard; It can probably be fixed with a JTAG, but even that possibly wouldn't work. Always, always keep a backup; and always, always read twice.

Dog Face Try a hard reset next time, POWER + VOLUME UP or DOWN for +10 sec . this mostly works on any phone, the only difference could be that the HOME button is used instead of the volume rocker(s)...

@GlennVandeuren
@GlennVandeuren 9 жыл бұрын
Leuel48Fan Exactly, except for the GT-I9000 there was something wrong with production/calibration of the volume rockers, they didn't had the necessary resistance for booting into recovery, as for the NAND Erase never use it :D, and if you really wanna know be sure to backup everything ! cause the phones IMEI will be formated also and it will be like your phone doesn't exist anymore.

If you root your device, you can try to uninstall/disable them even if the OS doesn't let you, using this app for example: play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.lb.app_manager Also, even when not rooted, on some devices, you could uninstall/disable those apps even if the OS doesn't let you, using a connected PC. Do research on this matter before buying android phone. Some phones, like said Nexus models, actually have really neat tools available to unlock and root the device without any problems. However some manufacturers indeed try to disable this as far as they can, if nothing else then making it harder to manufacture custom ROMs and such. And of course some repair companies are so shitty they do check for any kind of roots or unlocks, won't repair the phone and sends it back with bill - even if it were under warranty and the fault wasn't in the software. But again we are talking about android, so rooting isn't necessarity to most things, even I only did it because of easier backup of things, as again good example Nexus phones doesn't even have bloatware on them! :D

Just because you as a Linux user (I'll assume you use Linux based on your comment) might be comfortable running things as root, doesn't mean everybody should be. Don't think of it as you as the user is getting root access, because you aren't. One thing about android is that each app is seen as a user by the system and, as a result, has it's own permissions that it can use just like a guest user on your system. This is why apps have to ask for permission to use your devices storage if they want to store stuff outside their own folder. Rooting your android lets any app (with your permission) get superuser access, rather than just having normal user access.

its usually a good idea to root a phone. more access. faster áccess thanks to good tweaked roms and in some cases those low level entry phones become amazing. a friend of mine got a low level entry phone and now its almost to the level of the note 3 in terms of speed.

Also, a lot of jailbreaks add an ssh server to your device for the sake of recovery. If you do use one of these tools, I'd highly recommend changing your root password, so people on the same network as you can't install malware on your device.

Probably the most important security thing I can say about jailbreaking is you gotta change the root password from the default... Because the default is the same for every iOS device, so it's easy to gain access to.

Some of you watching this video in 2018 may want to give "BQ" a shot. They don't try to stop you rooting their devices (actually the necessary options are free to use in the dev options), and even with rooting the warranty isn't void (unless you actively broke the device by, let's say, overclocking it too hard). I got the Aquaris X Pro, it's amazing!

If you have an Android phone with Android 8.0 or later, there is a hidden developers options section in the "Settings" screen. To get it all you have to do is find where it tells you the "Build" number which is usually found in the "About" section. All you have to do is to tap on this 7 times. After that just return to the previous screen or the main part of the "Settings" section and it will be down towards the bottom. Just be careful with what you play with because it could cause your device to work in weird ways or maybe not at all.

Also, if you get a nexus device it's really easy to root your device because they have unlockable boot loaders, meaning it's realy easy to inject the files needed for root. Also in US it may be legal to root phones, last I checked it's not legal to root tablets, though a lot of people do it anyways (like me) and it's not enforced.

No matter what, a stock android phone (wether pure stock or a skin like touchwiz) is more customizable and feature rich than an iShit. Most jailbreak features can be down without root, such as file access or even changing you desktop and icons.

the only risky part of flashing things on android is the recovery and bootloader, although most of the time you dont have to mess with bootloader. If you install one sucessfully, you can play as many custom roms as you want, also dont forget to backup stockrom just in case that shit happens.

A few things for those who are confused: -Yes, your warranties are typically voided when you jailbreak or root your device -You can restore any Android device and eliminate all traces of rooting easily if you have to return it for some reason, but iOS has a few more technical complications if you want to reverse the process. -You can root or jailbreak almost any device of any firmware up to 7.1.2 for iOS and virtually any firmware for Android depending on the device in question. -There are many different things that you can do with a rooted Android device , though some of them can be illegal. -Jailbreaking and rooting was voted legal by Congress in either 2010 or 2012
