I think it's clear as day that he did something. Getting the most jacked he's ever been for any role with supposedly no muscle stimulus outside of push ups which would be anti-muscle building if he did to much of them[there are many guys that go into say the army and end up LOSING muscle due to cardio and calorie deficits though they do tons of BW training]. Also another support of the argument that I'm surprised Derek didn't bring up here but brings up in basically anyone elses natty or not is recovery on these mind boggling 2 times a day 6-7 days a week body transformations chicken broc and rice bullshit that all these actors do. You would NEED anabolics to recover properly and not just be a mess.

The best physique I’ve ever had was in my prime of boxing. I was low in body fat and absolutely shredded. My cardio was insane and my muscular insurance matched. Iv since taken a year off and focused on hypertrophy weight training and even with an optimized diet hitting my macros and training 5 days a week consistently, I look nothing like I did boxing. And when I was boxing I never touched a weight. Like someone else said in the comments, boxing gains are just different.

Tbh though if you compare his body in Southpaw to some of the best boxers in history, it's very comparable, he said himself that he began prepping by boxing. If you compare a lot of boxers there is a baseline bodybuild kind of like how a lot of pro marathon runners look physically similar to each other as far as their bodies look. Not to mention Jake Gyllenhaal is a method actor it wouldn't be illogical to say that before these scenes he decided to do a weight cut that actual fighters have to go through.
@mr.kayleb
@mr.kayleb 2 жыл бұрын
He's natural. having a boxing lifestyle(which includes eating) and adapting to it is a very good way on developing muscle and losing/gaining weight. Also, he is already fit and active during hir young years so it is no surprise that he can achieve something like that. Comparing it to a pro boxers physique on a specific weight class, it is very similar, so pretty much natural. He probably didnt just box, he may also had proper diet or ate a lot for the role.

I have to point out that Jake has superman width shoulders, even in Nightcrawler he looks to me like a big guy, and he can't seem to lose delt shape even at that weight. Also, as pointed out, he's not actually that big in Southpaw, but he does look totally shredded. I spent a good few years boxing at an amateur level, training intensely three days a week, and noticed a lot of tight muscle in only a few months. With Jake's physique, training intensity and correct diet it shouldn't be difficult to look as ripped as he does in Southpaw, drug free.

He's super lean in nightcrawler so it's possible he was dehydrating himself for these shots like how they get pumped for shots in other cases. Then like you said the muscle memory and paying for an insane trainer to keep you on track and I think it's possible. He's natty imo.

Nice vid! I would add 'if' he truly was doing only body weight exercises, as he gained weight back it would kinda replicate progressive overload. I've always thought Hollywood trainers give celebrities something relatively mild but definitely effective, like SARMs or Anavar or Winstrol. An "athlete" compound basically. But I doubt any mainstream actor is just going to sign up for a bodybuilder cycle (500mg test, tren/deca, etc.). Maybe GH too, especially if they are older, like Hugh Jackman for example. Like you mentioned, anyone fit can look really impressive on camera. They know how to edit, get a pump before, lighting, etc. to enhance the look.

I think its natural, he didn't have to lose any fat, I'm the same age as JAke, I have been running every 2 days as I gained a gut, started 2 meals intermittant fasting and have lost my gut in the last 2 months. I have been doing dips, chin ups and pull ups which helped my buceps. I have a dip and chin up bar. That has helped with my triceps. I used olymic rings thats helped my deltoids. So I do think it is achieveable as I have bulked back up. He doesn't look huge, my body type is like Jake and Ryans the running and sprinting does help. Also he maybe dehyrated for the scene he is filming and had a good workout before hand.

I could lose weight then gain my muscle back quickly and I've never taken steroids in my life and I'm 45! Why does everybody accuse everyone of steroids whenever they build a good physique? By the way, if you get a good pump going before picture or filming, dehydrate yourself a bit, and good lighting and it can make a huge difference. I am an off and on amateur boxer and my guess is that what he is not completely honest about is his weight training. Maybe He wanted to emphasize the importance of learning boxing skills to prove his chops as an actor. You can see it in his footage there are weights there . He had to do weights. It would be nigh impossible to get that hypertrophy with pushups from a 25 pound deficit while doing extensive cardio. Go to any boxing gym and see if anyone looks like him (who doesn't do weights). If you see your Canelo Álvarez video that's what they normally look like at that weight. He just didn't mention he had a lot of weight days. Then I would believe he didn't use anything.

His physique is most definitely attainable in 5 months with just boxing and calisthenics. Most boxer DON'T do much in terms of resistance training outside of calisthenics. Boxer routinely gain 10 lbs plus of lean mass when going up in weight classes while still doing mile and miles of roadwork, rounds and rounds of boxing and calisthenics. Ali won the gold at the 1960 Olympics at light heavy weight (178 lbs in the amateurs) and made his debut about 4 months later at heavyweight weight 192 lbs and he definitely didn't lift weights and didn't do calisthenics outside of abs.

i don't know a lot about the science behind it, all I know is back when I started boxing training a few times a week for about 1-2 hours/session, i gained a significant amount of muscle, while also losing some fat, i was pretty ripped, this was in my teenage years, i was like 17 -19 yrs old, ever since then whenever I started boxing again for some time, the gains have always been significant,´ i was nowhere near as crazy looking as he was in that movie, but I can definetly believe that if someone dedicates so much time to it, they can ehance their physique in a similar way that he did

Unpopular opinion here, this guy is a celebrity with all of the options out there to train and get big without coming at a huge cost or time from him. What did he take? I think he got on MENT instead of a usual TRT protocal I expect he takes to maintain his looks as he gets into his late 30s to keep his youth.

I don't think he used anything. He just gained his muscle back. You can gain a decent amount of mass from regular boxing training , pushups, pullups, med ball stuff, tire flips and pad work over 5 months especially if you were already that big before.

What isnt mentioned is when you get that lean in such a short amount of time muscle memory or not, your strength output, mental clarity, and overall health is shot to hell if natural. So to go and train to be a boxer when your body more or less isnt use to the training and then to workout probably 6-7 days a week (hollywood trainers🤦🏿‍♂️) and in your 30’s put on more muscle than you ever have while staying cut coming from a malnutrition diet and bodyframe... I would actually hope he was on something. (He is though)

I’ve been training with weights for 5 years and my coach started having me do 100 of everything (body weight and bar) and after 2 weeks I could see I looked more jacked… after 1 month it was insane how much of a 1 month difference I made. Boxing gains are just different

If you don’t mind me asking. What exercises did your coach have you do? I grew up playing football so weights were very important. I’ve been in boxing for the past 7 years and I have yet to find a balance between having the aesthetic look and having the skill to be fast and fluid in boxing. Please let me know?

@@KR-oo2wx I think it’s mainly genetics. Personally I do push-ups pull-ups and dips everyday. For weights I do a bro split. Only one body part a day.

Even with the Hollywood effects (make up, lighting, camera angles, etc) I just can't imagine him being that lean and dense without 1) lifting weights in a progressive overload style program and 2) totally natural . There are a lot of genetic freaks out there and it is possible, of course, that he was natural, but I just don't see it. I do agree that if he was on anything, it was something light and maybe not even something he knew about. A Hollywood trainer could easily have given him a little Var and a little Sonny and just told him it was a creating pill or something

I'm sure he did a little bit of resistance training 2 to 3 times a week. I believe he is natural. He's just lying to his teeth about lifting weights. Or or he's doing calisthenics. Have you seen calisthenics athletes? They look like they lift weights.

I don't think it's the question of "is this body achievable naturally in such period of time", that would be purely theoretical (and thus barely interesting) discussion - I think, the question is "how high are the chances that he did used steroids to ensure that his physique would be good enough". And I think the answer to the latter is "pretty high". He's an actor, his financial wellbeing depends in particular on his ability to be in good enough shape in movies which are requiring it - and to bring himself in such shape in really short amounts of time. And I don't think he - or most people, for that matter - would be taking chances. If there is a relatively (!) safe shortcut to the peak physique which can be taken, I'm pretty sure he (as well as most of the Hollywood stars) would be taking it. Also, it's not like he can tell to the wide audience "aside from hard training work, I also helped myself with some steroids"- imagine how it would look like.
