Yeah, Jake's got daddy issues, but Holt knowingly becoming a father figure and Holt not correcting Jake whenever he calls him dad (even when they barely knew each other) is a very sweet sentiment.

I wouldn’t call punching a five year old or suffocating a four year old “spilled milk”, however “revenge is mine” sayeth the LORD. I do not begrudge my father his abuse, and I will forgive him 77 times 7, but the sins of my father are visited upon me by way of _trauma._ Finding father figures among men who are sinful by nature is not a cure for our ills. I think this shows how tragic Jake Peralta really is. The first time I saw him acting like a kid, i thought it was funny and weird and a bit normal. However, as the show progresses, I can see why Jake always act like a child and Calls Holt "Dad". His father was never there in most of his childhood and have to deal with a lot of issues about him. This makes me think that Jake is one of the best character in Brooklyn Nine-Nine; showing that even a comedic character can have a deeper history than you first realize

6:53 this family history actually answered a lot of questions - jakes family has generational trauma. That’s why the Peralta fathers haven’t been the best. Something HUGE happened to make a Peralta son DROWN HIS FATHER IN A WELL. The act itself would have been a trauma, but whatever warranted it was certainly worse. Each Peralta son has been affected and traumatised by being raised by someone who was also traumatised by their upbringing. But it gets less horrifying as you progress down the line and that’s generational HEALING

As a fan of The Office AND B99, I always considered Jake more likable and more well-written than Michael due to his backstory. Every time Michael brought his his personal issues, it always felt like a ploy to get more attention from his employees. But with Jake, you never feel that he's manipulating people's feelings about him and that he actually feels pain about his childhood, regardless of how many times he brings it up.
