I have always sucked at throwing a football but I'm determined to learn how.
The furthest NFL quarterbacks usually throw in a game is around 55 yards, although last year in 2022 PJ Walker threw the longest completion in NFL history, a 67.7 yard hail mary to DJ Moore. So if I can throw 50 yards I would feel pretty good about myself.
Thanks for watching :)

Shout outs to Coach Grant at First Down Training, he's awesome. Your "terrible" throw of 35 yards is better than my 30 yard max throw that I actually spent an entire summer working on.

I normally don't post on KZfaq, but you're not getting your hips through before your shoulder. Try standing perpendicular to the target. Then, don't just step forward. Rather, Step slightly left of your target (maybe a 30 degree angle) as you pull the ball back. This will open up your hips. Then, as you bring your arm through (keeping your triceps parallel with the ground), angle your right knee towards the front and transfer your weight through to the front foot. Remember to pull your left elbow through. You can feel it creating a catapult motion in your shoulders. You can practice this without throwing the ball. A spiral is caused by the approach you took in this video, but nothing your are doing is generating more power.
@JakeFerrin
@JakeFerrin 6 ай бұрын
Stepping left of the target is a great idea. I'm going to try that. Yeah I get the concept that my hips need to generate the power but when I try to put any power on the ball my hips and shoulders turn at the same time. It's so annoying. This is great advice though. Thanks for taking the time to comment. I appreciate it!

@@JakeFerrin The way I visualize it that really helps is to think of your body as a whip, starting from your feet and cracking at the ball. The better you get at your motions, the quicker you can transition from feet to knees, to hips, to waist, to chest, to arm all the way to the ball, making it less exagerated and more compact and powerful, but you gotta commit and give it time practicing it piece by piece, otherwise muscle memory can't develop.

@@JakeFerrin For sure. It would be good to get a coach to help you out. I was a wide-receiver in 7th, 8th, and 9th grade. I could catch the ball but couldn't throw it to save my life. When I was moved to QB I was taught how to throw a ball, and then told to practice everyday over the summer. By the end of the summer I was able to throw, with good form, and much more accurately than I had been able to throw just a few months before. Form is everything when throwing a football, power is important but its useless if you don't know how to get the ball where you want it in the first place.

@@JakeFerrin as a senior in high school, and after 2 years of weightlifting and training, I could only throw the ball 50 yards. Our starting varsity QB could throw it 55 yards, and he had been a QB since 7th or 8th grade. So don't sweat it, throwing an accurate 35 yarder is much more impressive IMO

Great video can't wait for part2, congrats on the improvement. I noticed two things about your throwing motion that will make you throw farther if you fix it, the first thing is that you're not extending on release and the second is that your hips are a little off timing, which makes you lose torque, you should rotate your hips while getting you're shoulders back

Thanks for all of this footage you got! I have a similar goal to hqve that perfect arching spiral fly half a field. It would be so rewarding. I started practicing my release again as home physicl therapy for an old shoulder injury from a car accident and i will say, lay on your back and practice throwing that spiral up and back down to yourself. You don't need much room or a partner and you also get to practice your receiving hands. Its been doing a lot for my release angle and also helping my injury. Peace and love, brother!

I can't tell you how much I enjoyed your video!! A couple of years ago, just like you (but at the age of 40...) I was determined to be able to throw a good spiral without any football background whatsoever. Since then I watch ALL the videos that come out. And each year I get better (I think!). I focus a lot on the hip rotation, my wrist, extension of the arm, balance, sometimes the little "Aaron Rodgers popstep", it helps to throw further... I'm amazed that you were able to improve this much in only 4 days. ✊

Hey man, stoked to see video 2. I have thrown just about every ball there is and have pretty decent range. Looking at your throwing motion you have the right thought process but you're treating your arm almost more like a shotput throw, like your pushing the ball instead of slinging it. In the clips you had, you hear the coaches say "let's go sling it", that's because a football throw is more like a slingshot. You use your hips to build the power and your arm is slung forward by the momentum built from your feet, through your hips, shoulders and down your arm. It's not a shove or a push. A good way to get the feel would be to stand with your feet shoulder width apart, arm held out straight out to your side, and then twist at your hips really fast. You should feel your arm drag behind and then sling forward when you stop your hip rotation. That's pretty similar to the feeling of a really well thrown ball. Also, your release angle can effect your shoulder getting sore. Try for a more straight above your head release angle rather than more side arm motion you're using now. Last, you want your hand as far away from your body as possible when you release the ball. It's the longest pendulum you can create, and that speed you generate is amplified by how far away from your body the ball is at release. Best of luck slinger!

Great start to your journey of Quarterbacking, know that the journey never ends. You’ll be sitting in your couch and just randomly start throwing. You’ll dream of throwing. You’ll even throw non football things like they’re footballs. All until you reach the final stage, tweaking the conventional ways of throwing to find your own throwing motion. You’ll either do that hop like Rodgers, Pat that shit down like Tom, or go full Rivers

Breaking down your throwing motion was a good idea. Someone below pointed out to rotate your shoulders. I agree. Creating torque would generate more power. Try this 5 minutes a day. Exchange your front and back foot by facing 90 degrees left of the target. Your right foot will be closer to the target and your left foot would be further. Now point your right toe towards the target. Only your right toe. Then face in the direction of the target by opening up your hips towards it. Your weight will be mainly on your right foot and you'll be balancing on your left toe. Now bring the ball back near your right shoulder by twisting your upper body clockwise. Then let it fly. You can feel the release of the torque and your shoulders are already rotating.

Working on my form and I came across this video. Really the only reason you didn't throw for 50 is because you didn't train to throw for 50. You worked on your mechanics short range but not long. You have to tilt the shoulders back to adjust the angle, otherwise you're putting more pressure on your shoulder and arm to life the ball. By tilting you can release the ball with good timing and it still has the lift, but you don't need the same amount of umph. It's been 9 months so you probably already learned all your mistakes though lol. Your form was so much better in just 4 days man, awesome video.

Have you ever played baseball before? I was watching this and thinking that the main thing I am seeing is your arm doesn’t looked relaxed when you are throwing, it looks like you are whipping it way too far into body and then in turn your body is kinda tilting to the left and everything seems thrown off. Personally what I think could help would be just throwing around a baseball a bit and working on getting that arm farther out and more relaxed to where it’s really gonna roll off your fingertips and fly. Another thing to think about is you should start out turned about 45 degrees to the right of your target and try to think about your upper torso like a teeter totter. When you go to throw the left arm needs to swing back a bit which will naturally throw the other one farther forward. I hope this helps 👍

Just turned 47, and still qb flag teams. Used to be able to throw it 60+ but now barely hit 50 yards anymore. Still got accuracy and velocity. Weird that I lost over 10 yards on my deep ball. Anyway, I thought you were sandbagging us when you showed the day before drills into the trampoline. I’ll have to watch it again, but at first glance, your motion looked really smooth. Whenever it does click for you, it’ll be like riding a bike. You’ll be slinging it with velocity, even when you get up there in age

Im pretty good at throwing spirals, and throwing/hitting a baseball, even though I didn't grow up in the US/play those sports as a child. The reason: I played golf. The biomechanics are the same. Forget about the ball/club in your hand and just focus on the hip rotation. The hips will pull your upper body through and guide your arm. This applies for all throwing and hitting sports (and even punching). Have your knees slightly bent, and feel as though you are pushing off the ground with the ball of your back foot when you turn. Over time, you will feel as though you can turn until your belt buckle faces the direction you are throwing before your shoulder or arm even begin to move. That whipping motion also creates the power you need.

Pull the ball, dont push.. hips rotate then, shoulders rotate to pull the ball to your target wherever your lead foot is pointing. At the release, your index finger side of your hand should end at you hip/quad at the opposite hip for a clean spiral (index finger should be the last thing on the ball)

I'm a pretty young qb but I know a thing or 2 about throwing a football. I'll tell you your flaws in your throwing motion, 1, bring your elbow way higher. It should be at least above the shoulder when throwing. 2, your foot you put your weight on can be a little bit behind you, but if its too far behind you all your power is lost and you're throwing all arm. 3, I would stop worrying about getting a good spiral, as long as your throwing motion is correct the wrist flick will come in naturally. But to throw a spiral just keep your wrist strong throughout the entire throwing motion. 5, bring your left arm closer to your face, act like your eating a sandwich. It'll make you more accurate and improve your throwing motion drastically. Sorry for rambling but I want you to be proud of your arm strength. Have a good one!

bro its not only technique its also muscle strenght. if your shoulder starts to compensate your shoulder stability is propably not high enough to deal with the lower body impulse. start with strength training then go into mobility + core stability then you can propably start technique. its not that you cant learn it the other way around but thats how i would start.

Good stuff. I did the same thing a few years ago. Did a deep dive on a bunch of instructional vids. Do you play golf? One thing I learned is that it's very similar to the golf swing. 1m35 seconds in your video talks about lower body/hip/shoulder sequencing. Just like the golf swing, it's all timing of sequence based. That said, it's easier said than done. One other thing I did was buy five cheaper composite footballs and a target. Makes practice by yourself a lot easier.

Super late comment but the thing that messes a lot of people up is when they hear "follow through across your body." This only works if your arm slot is roughly a 3/4 to side-arm arm slot. The follow-through needs to be basically the same angle as your arm slot. If you throw overhand, it needs to be damn-near straight down, if you throw a 3/4 slot it needs to be diagonal across your body, if you throw side-arm it, your follow through needs to come horizontally across your body. This is because you need to keep your arm on the same plane the entire throw. If it moves off the plane, it's gonna push the back of the ball causing it to wobble. Also if you short-arm the throw instead of releasing on extension, your arm is going to be off-plane, pushing the back of the ball causing it to wobble as well. You need to be almost fully extended before you actually pronate your wrist and let go I'm sure you've even felt better throwing a spiral when your arm was extended than bent. Als,o I wonder if you played baseball (I did which made it hard for me to throw a football at first) because it looks like you flick your wrist like a 4-seam while pronating This also pushes the back of the football. If you had a splint on your wrist, you would still be able to throw a football because your wrist is rotating not flicking. Pronating is a finessee that you have to get the feel of. The best way I can describe it is that it's like grazing the size of a football with a certain authority. It's like spinning a small bike tire but with your pointer finger, you have to get just the right angle with just the right amount of strength.

Ok bro, I watched you snap your hips and shoulders with the lacrosse ball, do the same thing with a football. Power or distance comes from there whether it’s Football, Golf or Baseball. However, the biggest thing that I see is your throwing arm is dropping almost below your neck, so it’s almost as if you’re throwing a pop-up. Remember this start from the ear, start your throw from your ear. so take the ball bring it up to your ear released from there, your hand should be in a backward C formation step into the throw, using your hips. Your throw is starting from your shoulder, almost as if you were trying to throw side armed. As a drill, pretend you are taking a snap having two hands on the ball take a three step.drop Bring the ball to your ear, elbows up, step into the with one arm, as you release the ball you’re throwing arm should come across your body. I’m pretty sure you got a lot of great advice. However, this is the mechanics for throwing properly is 10 yards or 50. Hope I helped.

How to throw a football 1. A position- It all starts with your base and your body position before you even throw the ball. Feet shoulder with apart with 60% of your weight under your back leg. A relaxed ball carriage with the ball resting against your chest and nose of the ball while slightly pointing out. You should have a firm wrist meaning they shouldn’t be bending either too much forward or backwards. Your wrist will stay in this position throughout the whole process of throwing the ball. 2. Stepping to load- While keeping your weight under you, you will take a slight step forward and to your left of your midline. make sure to not over stride so that your weight shifts forward, your weight should stay under your back leg. Also make sure you don’t open your foot towards your target, instead point your toes to your target. As you step to load you will separate your hands now just holding the ball with your right hand. Your left hand should mirror your right hand, but you just don’t have the ball in your left hand other than that they should look the same. As you do this close your shoulder towards your Target and at the same time start to open your hips. 3. Unwinding- In this step you will now be transferring your weight from your back leg to your hips then to your upper body all the way to the ball. It is crucial that you stay light on your front foot, meaning making sure your heel stays out of the ground and you are pivoting on the ball of your foot. This helps with keeping your weight under you as you rotate. Another important factor is your back leg. While unwinding it shouldn’t flip over and swinging forward it should stay back and actually slightly go behind you. This happens at the same time you pivot on your front foot. At the same time, you will start to transfer your weight to your hips and open them up to your target. Your upper half will start to open as well, but it won’t open completely until you release the ball. So, make sure you keep a firm front shoulder and don’t allow it to just swing open as you open your hips. Also make sure to keep your left hand in a relaxed closed fist position in front of or touching your chest as if you were holding a microphone to talk into. With your right arm you will now start to bring your elbow forward with the ball trailing it, the ball should be at or behind your ear. Making sure your elbow is even or slightly above your shoulder. All of this should be done with leveled shoulders and without leaning out to your left. 4. Releasing the ball- This is the step where everything comes together, and it should look effortless. You have transferred your weight to Your hips, and they have opened. The weight from your hips has been transferred to your upper body and your chest has finally opened with hips, your shoulders and chest are now parallel to your target. When you release the ball, you will still be light on your front foot and your back leg will stay back. It is only after the ball has come out that your heel will touch the ground and your back leg can swing forward, but making sure not to swing forward passed your front foot because this will mean you're pushing off instead of rotating your body. As for your upper half you must maintain leveled shoulders and reach full extension of your arm. Your elbow should come first then your forearm should trail it finally catching up giving you that flick of the wrist motion. As for your wrist, it shouldn’t move at all like we talked about in step 1 your wrist should stay in that firm straight position until the very moment the ball comes off your fingers. To throw a good spiral you must get the nose of the ball pointing forward, reaching full extension will help with this. Also, when releasing the ball instead of trying to flick your wrist and pointer finger down resulting in the palm of your Hand facing outwards to your right try to imagine yourself unscrewing a light bulb on the ceiling. This will get the nose of the ball pointing forward giving you a clean spiral with a high spin rate. Didn’t touch on everything here but I Hope this helps

i think you should try to loosen up your arm and let it flow in your throw. Also, your elbow is a smidge too low.

Most of what you accomplished in four days was refining your throwing motion. Your current distance throws simply means you are at your current physiological limit. Your max POTENTIAL is going to take much longer than 4 days to reach. This applies to all ballistic sports (tennis, baseball, hockey, javelin, etc). So, when looking at say pro tennis players, you will notice their primary racquet arm and shoulder is noticeably bigger, more developed than their non raquet arm. Perhaps a better goal than discrete 50 yards would instead be, whatever the max potenial is after a period of months (eg, might end up being say 60 yards). To accelerate your development, you can do a lot of throwing reps with objects heavier than about 1 lb (just over 14 to 15 oz weight of an official game football). Get some 2 and 3 lbs mini dumbells and practice your throwing motion with them (without actually throwing them). "Throw" the dumbells at full power, max velocity, until the arm and shoulder get a little sore and weak (say 100 reps total). Start with heavier dumbell and finish with the lighter one. After 1 or 2 days rest and recovery, do the throwing reps again or practice throwing footballs instead. Do this cylce of train and recovery until you reach your goal or lose interest. As the weeks and months go by, you will see your throwing range increase. Eventually though, you will reach your absolute limit (who knows, perhaps 65 yards?). Good luck!

Learn to throw a baseball with power first. There is a different wrist angle for throwing a football but the arm motion is the same. Try to keep your head stationary. It's kinda like you are off balance right now which would be why your body tilts so far to the left. You need to be balanced. Use your left arm as a counter-weight to keep your upper body vertical. Your body is instinctually moving away from your elbow yo keep your balance. Point at your target with your left hand. Then the left arm is exactly opposite of the right through the entirety of the throw. This should result in a more vertical upper torso and head position.
