It is very interesting as your explanation about mindfulness are very similar to what I've read about Kyudo (japanese archery) which is called zanshin. Zanshin literally means "remaining mind" which can be described further as a state of relaxed alertness. I also read that if we put our attention to the process and task at hand, the arrow hitting the middle is simply the side effect. Really appreciate that you touch the "Zen" of archery no matter what form of archery it is.

The briefest way I can describe mindfulness is becoming aware of your own sense of attention, and in time learning how to wrest back control of it when it wanders away from you (which it will always want to do, as the both the outside (and inner) world is full of stimulus). The best book I've ever read about mindfulness is Jiddu Krishnamurti's 'Freedom from the Known'.

Nicely articulated Jake. Mindfulness... simple and effective when applied properly, but you do need to be disciplined... bit like every other element of the archery process, it needs practice to master!!

"Over thinking" the shot makes for arrows flying into oblivion. I like the Japanese Kyudo/Mushin, the "quiet soul" I call it. This is a very important concept...thanks Jake.

Legend Jake! I actually use archery as my mindfulness to break away from anxiety and daily stresses. This video brings things into perspective and compliments why I have chosen this sport. Thanks for creating it!

Focus on the breath. Live here, right now. I usually do it in meditation. Thank you for remind me to refocus and no judgement.

My coach says "be deliberate" or "be intentional". Focus only on the shot sequence; bills, spousal disagreements, deadlines at work, and everything else in my world will still be waiting when the shot is complete. It takes practice...

I am practicing meditation for more than a year now. Good for archery - good for life. 👍 One single breath can be enough to "accept and let go" a bad shot, eliminate distracting thoughts and reflect on the "here and now".

completely, meditation was essential for my evolution in archery, and every time i go to the field is just like a meditation session. i practice target archery (barebow) but i'm not interested in competition, to me is just a body and mind excercise, so i also highly recommend yoga. mastering your shooting process and position is completely similar to mastering a yoga asana; the same focusing on the steps, the distant attention to the details, the relaxed tension of the muscles, the active stillness of your mind and body.

I know this dont have anything to do with the content in this video. But, iv been watching sooo many clips about everything and when it comes to tuning. As a noob... how or is it even possible to tune a bow when you cant group the arrows that consistant? Is it possible that you can make a clip about that? Thanks for all the content im trying to absorb atm.

You can't tune unless you group but you can't group unless your setup is decently tuned. This may seem like a Catch 22, but what you can do is take it in steps. As your grouping improves you'll be able to tune a little better and so on. Don't get caught up in the details too soon, the fine points of tuning won't matter until you're scoring in the 620s.

To some degree you can. You need someone experienced to stand behind you and watch your arrow flight. Also, the angel at which the arrows are sticking in the target can be used. Good enough for the beginning and once you are shooting decent groups you can switch to bare shaft tuning. A distance of 12-18m will do. If you are already grouping at this distance, watch "bare shaft tuning for beginners".
