All forms of archery including Compound, Recurve, Barebow, Traditional and Instinctive all can benefit from using this simple change of perspective when it comes to shooting a bow. Controlling the intensity or internal effort of the archery shot cycle can benefit all archers and will help you shoot more arrows in the middle.

I just want to say thank you, for sharing all these valuable knowledge. Though there are some tutorial on the internet, but the knowledge in such Olympic professional level is extremely scarce. It is no doubt that your channel is the top 1 educational channel of archery on the whole internet.

The simple way to achieve here, or at least to overcome the "explosion spike" is to change the mental focus of the string coming off the fingers as "the end" in favour of a new "end", a new "finish", like secondary reference. You can see the Korean ladies do this; touching the rear brim of the hat or flicking the ponytail. I suggest to people to "hold the pose for the cameras". This seems to work by removing the "explosion" as the mental focus of the end of the shot being as the string comes off the fingers. As usual, how we use language in the early stages of coaching has a lot to answer for here. Finish the shot off! Good video, Jake!

I am now one year into competitive barebow, and it just dawned upon me how important this is. Time to lower that intensity level. Thanks, Jake.

Thanks for the archery tips and lessons. Your previous video “breathe cycle” and this video “intensity curve” executes wonderfully the physical status of the shot cycle. Luke

I didn't notice you watching me at my backyard Agincourt this afternoon - but this video addresses specifically the issue I had today. 1 or 2 or 3 really clean, precisely placed arrows. The other 3 all over the target . . . it's that 'explosion' thing, and I know darn well it's primarily a Head game I need to master. Body will follow.

It sounds like an analogy would be the shot follow through in Basketball: to have a fluid shot, build up that muscle memory, and that the motion shouldn't end early.

Martial arts teaches to relax or "drop" your shoulders & quiet your body using small but precise motion to conserve your energy till it's needed at the point of contact. An uptight form will slow your speed, steal your energy (from punches/kicks) & cause fatigue to set in sooner. This technique translates into all archery forms & vernacular.🤔 As I've learned and am still learning...from you...to set my front shoulder, "drop & relax" it as I nock my arrow & raise my arm into my relaxed 'divot' position. Palm push a relaxed bow hand into the target while transferring the full draw to a still head & locked stance. Then take a breath out to slightly concave the shoulders & chest to ensure aim & string alignment and that my shoulders are relaxed while not losing form & bone on bone contact through the shot cycle. The more I can relax through out the shot-cycle the more focus & energy I have for the point of release. In as much, I pluck less with a smoother release which translates into better scores AND conserves my energy to get thru competitions.😏 This technique is very evident while shooting blank-bale.

Great video! I find this even more common among new archers, especially ones that go up in bow weight to quickly, and also the trad discipline seems to be a bit more prone from what I have seen as well. Watching your imitations of the explosive release made me chuckle a bit... I can hear these archers who have the uncontrolled explosive releases on the line... especially when they are shooting right next to me... every shot, big exhale, sometimes even grunts etc, release hand going every which different way. It gets annoying after a while not gonna lie, reminds me of the meatheads at the gym lifting heavy weights and yelling/screaming super loud. Just an opportunity I guess to work on your focus and mental control :)
