@@3506Dodge I kind of get you, but most US standups are still in a persona in their comedy, Bill Burr being an obvious example. I think it's more the absurdity of the persona and how that's delivered with a very juxtaposed calmness. In US, larger than life personas are delivered with larger than life body language and tone, whereas in UK, the very nature of this comedic relationship mismatching is the joke itself.

Truly admirable how generous Seth was in this interview. I love James but it is never easy interviewing a character and I haven't seen James so "in character" in a long time. Maybe he turns it up when he's touring, but James was fully his stage personality here and Seth played along perfectly. Completely unfazed by the idiosyncrasies of James's persona and knew exactly how to play along to give James opportunities to be funny. I feel like in another time Seth would have been a masterful straight man in a double act.
@nickharvey7233
@nickharvey7233 Жыл бұрын
Exactly my thoughts. James is a rather sensitive, fragile soul (even for a comic) . My suspicion is that, as a defense mechanism, he ramps up the "stagey" persona as the stakes grow higher - breaking into the US is huge for any British comic/musician (and many have failed over the years).
@rubyrayne8

@@nickharvey7233 I was thinking the same thing. I just saw him last week and his new set is so vulnerable, so open and so funny. And then seeing him so much in character here was interesting, but totally agree. I’m sure it’s to try and not only entertain but also a default to a possible uncomfy situation. And god bless Seth for being a fan of his, you can tell he is just delighted by James.

@@anthonyjs8048 i guess the awkwardness thing? or the use of implied/subtextual jokes? no doubt examples of either exist in american comedians, but stuff like that is quite core to the uk comedy scene (which is, obviously, very much smaller...) honestly i don't think most brits get his verion of it though. he's adapted it to fit him so his style is pretty much unique afaik.

This interview is a perfect example of Seth’s amazing interview style. He knows when and how to let the comic just *go* but he can reel em’ back in too and it’s just GOOD. @@dcmastermindfirst9418 OK, I don't mind: humour, then. It's just that, in my browser, it shows up with a red squiggly line under it. Generations ago, somebody decided it would be a great idea to simplify English spellings on one side of the Atlantic and not the other, and it has been an unnecessary bone of contention dividing our nations ever since. My forebear may have been impudent, but that doesn't mean I'm unduly attached to one spelling or the other.

@@dcmastermindfirst9418 I'm just saying that there seems to be a misconception that Americans willfully misspell your favorite words, either out of sheer pigheaded ignorance, or to be disagreeable, when in fact we simply spell those words the way we've been advised our whole lives is the 'correct' way to spell them here; we're not passionate about it nor did lexicographers ever ask for our vote.

@brandontylerburt That's just ignorance and alot of stupidity, unfortunately. Most Americans aren't the brightest sparks so they don't know any better. It's ONE letter, and they found it too difficult to put that in the word???? Ridiculous!!
