most people try to please an audience. James just does James. It's not just British people who do it, a lot of people on US shows aren't that authentic. It's quite literally an act. James is an embellishment, not so much an act. He basically can't help himself.

Yeah it often feels like they end up doing a impression of American comics instead of embracing the style that got them success. @humann5682

It was funny but watched it in Belfast just before the pandemic. He was definitely agitated. It wasn't part of his normal shtick. He seemed really annoyed he had to be there. He was belligerent to the whole audience the whole night. Not the normal "pick on the front row" deal, he was just shitting on thr audience for showing up, for living where they lived, for him having to be there. Like it wasn't even jokes sometimes, he veered in to rants. When he talked about the whole Mr Bean thing I got the vibe he was struggling to keep it together. I thought it was just us, but at the interval everyone at the bar was saying the same thing: He seemed really out of sorts and like he was annoyed to be there. It was a bit of a let down tbh because before that I thought he was amazing. He seemed to be struggling a bit with his mental health that night and I hope it was just a blip. Either that, or he really hates Belfast and Northern Irish people with a passion lol.

@@humann5682 I thought his jokes/performance for this tour was supposed to come off a bit like that? The idea that he was trying to be 'cool and edgy' because his usual audience was usually Christians and old people. I thought that was part of his shtick but like you said, he might have been having a bad night though when you saw him. I didn't feel like that in Birmingham.

@@humann5682 his show in sydney was the same way. he's spoken about it since on a few podcasts, it seems like a result of anxiety, he sees one person not laughing and then thinks the whole gig is going badly so would throw it away on purpose. right now he doesn't think he'll ever do stand up again. i think touring material like this, about touchy things like mental health, made him extra sensitive to audiences and hecklers. the mr bean breakup happened in 2013, he's not actually bothered by it anymore, but the breakup that messed him up the most and triggered his breakdown in 2017 only got referenced in passing.

Acaster doesn't give himself enough credit. Cold Lasagne is an absolutely fantastic stand up show 10/10. However Repertoire completely subverts the genre from the moment he walks out on stage 4 times on the trot (knees, running on mid sentence etc). It is genius beyond imagination of most (hannah and bo 100% rightfully excluded) in terms of intricacy, silliness, intelligence and is completely critically and publicly underrated on a level that is criminal and performed in a period of life where he was at the lowest point. 11/10x4 Must watch. Well done Seth for giving him a platform in America once again after the horror show that was Conan. You can really see Seth Meyers' improv background here. Many hosts/comedians get really taken aback by James and don't engage with his style, trying to pull interviews back to their notes and a more normal tone. But despite clearly being surprised by the New York joke Seth doesn't miss a beat and every single response is some form of "Yes, and...". He 100% plays along and encourages it and you can see how it puts James at ease and encourages him to go full Acaster, leading to an incredible interview. Lots of folk in the comments are complimenting James for not pulling back for a US audience (as they should), but Seth deserves credit for actively playing along with it without taking any of the limelight!
