His life has more value meaning someone wanted him to live rather than the brother in law. Honestly I forget most of the political schemes but I think the Company needed James to sign over American property in his own hands.

The brother-in-law? He never had a bullet in his gun, his second never loaded it thus the reason James survived

Geary's gun had an empty pellet put in by the Company, so he does not kill James

show was originally made for 3 seasons and what i know is that tom had a busy scheduale and they kinda forgot

It's been scheduled for release on Netflix next year but not sure when. I'm also not sure if it will be on BBC again. It probably will though seeing how it was a huge audience draw
