Love James Arness. He was so good in his acting, and did provide many enjoyable episodes. He did have tragic occurances in his life, regarding marriage and children, don't we all? God did grant him a very good second marriage, a marriage that he said was "the best part of his life." Glad that he had that. I was sorry to hear that he passed, but that is what awaits all of us. No one gets out of life alive.

I must admit that growing up through the 60s I didn't watch the Classic TV Westerns . My interests lay elsewhere. It wasn't until recently, the last 5 years that I began watching them.And particularly Gunsmoke. I'm glad it's in syndication so I was able to watch it every day over a period of time. There's denying level of professionalism by the cast and crew of the show. 👍👌

You're not alone. I, and some of the others on our discussion forum also only just discovered (or re-discovered) the show in the last few years. Trust me when I tell you, the episodes are even better when you see them complete. All of the channels that currently show them edit out quite a bit, and INSP even refuses to show some episodes atall, due to subject matter. You can view all 635 episodes, clear and uncut on our forum, JamesArness.Proboards.Com (it's free and easy to join).

Ken Curtis grew up not far from the real Dodge City, basing Festus on someone he met. While I knew he had been a big band singer, it was only later that I spotted him as the pub singer Dermot Fahy in John Wayne's "The Quiet Man." He was Ford's son-in-law!

Ken doesn't disguise his voice here like he had to as Festus.
@calvinhandley2373
@calvinhandley2373 3 жыл бұрын
He was disguising his voice in a different way here compared to Gunsmoke. Ken was an accomplished singer before he turned to character acting. He appeared on Gunsmoke in a number of different roles, some good guys, and some bad guys, and he threw different voice styles at all of those characters. In the color episodes (Season 12 and later) Ken Curtis added more "hillbilly" to the character, both in his behavior and vocal inflections. In the B&W episodes Festus was less bumbling, and a little bit is a schemer. This shift seems to have started after Dennis Weaver left the series for good. To me it seems like the writers sort of combined some of Chester's qualities with those of Festus.

@@OhShaw It would have been great to have Quint, Chester and Festus in the story, but the plot would have made it difficult. I believe there was only one episode where all three were in it. Burt would have been great and did the intro to Arness's book.
@OhShaw
@OhShaw Жыл бұрын
@@jameshoran8 That sure would have been a treat for fans to have ALL the guys back. A good writer could have come up with a story to mskr that happen, but as it was, Mantley went for money-saving flashbacks, and was bothered that a script had been unofficially approved by Blake and Arness before he had been consulted, so he had it re-written. Besides wanting more money, Mantley's re-write was the other reason Curtis turned it down.
