CBS thanks you, I think. the shame is, TV LAND hacks scenes out of shows, which if you watch 'em long enough you'll barely notice, but it's all about greed. INSP also shows lots of 'GUNSMOKE', and recently started showing re-mastered color episodes (the B&W's were already done), but still they succumb to greed, and also hack things out. "hell and "damn," just for starters. but parts of scenes are missing.

I had the distinct pleasure of working with Dennis Weaver in a Theater Show, 6 nights a week for an entire season. He did a 10 minute bit, every night, as Chester, (wore that original hat) teaching the audience "How to play the Git-tar". I was off stage and watched it every night, and it never got old. He was a fabulous Comedic Actor as well as a Dramatic Actor. He was a gracious man, and he genuinely loved the people. He would stay after the Show, many nights, just meeting and visiting with whoever was there. We rode in the 4th of July Parade together. I still carry that picture in my wallet. He was a joy to be around. I miss him.

Two of my favorite scenes (not in these vids) were from the old black and white episodes. The first one was with Matt and Doc sitting outside the jail when Chester walks up with a paper note and says "Here's a message for you Mr. Dillon"; then Doc says to Chester "well, you'd better sit down and rest; you've done your days work"; then Chester says "why aint you operating on someone; are your hands too shaky?" and Doc replies "I'm surprised you'd say something like that...I was about to buy you a beer!" Then Chester just stood there looking lost. It was great smart-ass remarks that real friends would say to each other. The second one was With Matt sitting outside again when Doc walks up to him. Matt said " Hello Doc, looks like you're gonna be real busy today". Doc says "really? Why is that?" Matt says "just the law of averages. You didn't do anything at all yesterday". .Doc just stands there in stunned silence. These two scenes made me laugh out-loud. The wise cracking banter between these characters seemed so normal that it could have been ad-libbed.
@OhShaw
@OhShaw 2 жыл бұрын
Those are both great scenes, and in fact, I had already included the first one (with Chester) in my next volume, which I should be posting soon. I'll try to get the "law of averages" one in there, too :) I appreciate the suggestion. The B&W seasons with the original cast really do have the best lines, in my opinion. The writers were so good and they fit so much into those half hour shows. I'm constantly rewinding them to listen again to something particularly funny or clever, and like you said, it always sounded so natural. I think that's why they tickle me so much, because more than anyone else on the show those three characters (Matt, Chester and Doc) always struck me as being the most like real people (real friends) in the way they interacted.

Back when I was a kid everybody watched Gunsmoke. With the advent of satellite radio I discovered the old Gunsmoke radio show that ran for around three years before it came to tv and was the highest rated radio show. William Conrad voiced Dillon and did a fine job but his physical appearance did not impress to carry him over to tv. John Wayne recommended a good friend of his named James Arness, who stood 6'7", for the part and the rest is history as they say.

@wayne3302264
@wayne3302264 3 жыл бұрын
@@Michaelbos Over the years, there seems to be confusion over whether or not, the part of Matt Dillon was ever offered to John Wayne. “Gunsmoke” creator Norman MacDonnell and Charles Marquis Warren, the first season producer seemed firm that the part was never offered. For me the argument was settled by a rare Wayne interview (Focus on Film-Spring 1975 issue), where the Duke was directly asked and confirmed that the part was offered to him. Page 272 of the just released John Wayne: The Life and Legend by Scott Eyman, may settle the argument and show everyone was telling the truth. According to the book, the role was directly offered to John Wayne by William S. Paley, owner of CBS (who in 1967 would reverse “Gunsmoke’s” cancellation) the part. The book goes on to state Paley offered the Duke two million dollars a year plus partial ownership of the series. Wayne declined the offer and recommended James Arness. Since the offer never resulted in negotiations and had been made directly by Paley to Wayne, there was no reason MacDonnell or Warren would have known or been involved.

Thank you :) B&W seasons are indeed my favorites, and I do prefer to use them in my videos. Another reason though, is I try avoid using non-DVD sources as much as possible, since they're almost always too blurry or distorted. At the time I made this particular montage, for example, the only color seasons that had been released on DVD were 12, 13 and 14.

You know you think you know the script by heart but then when you're in the middle of eating, and something is said on Gunsmoke that just about sends your dinner across the room because you're laughing, and it's usually when I'm tired and overly Goofy but the other night during a show or maybe in your clip someone probably Chester asked Matt, "guess who's back in town!" And Matt immediately replied, "I don't even know who left." I don't know why but that absolutely cracked me up; still does. Brilliant writing.

my no. 1 favorite line is when an older friend of Matt's who was so fast w/ a gun he worked a Wild West Show, is getting old, and fearful of lesser, younger, gunman taking advantage of his advanced age, telling Matt "it'll happen to you one day." Matt replies as realistically as he can: "to tell ya the truth, I never really figured on living that long". Jack Elam as Jim Barret(an outlaw whose not wanted for anything) also warns "Dillon" of the same fate w/ age. 'GUNSMOKE' always drove home the point about mortality.

My all-time favorite episode is "The Gallows." and the final scene where Matt Dillon walks away from a man (Jeremy Slate) that was going to be wrongfully hanged. His reaction that he could not do anything about it is totally awesome Arness. It was probably the only time he was going to let a prisoner get away, but his friend that saved his life refused to allow Dillon to break the law.

Jeremy Slate could play a ridiculously decent human being, or a nasty, no remorse killer. you're right about 'the Gallows'. maybe Slate's best appearance. he just keeps appearing when he could be disappearing. Dillon actually wants him to vanish. he did actually let accused killers get away, very rarely. 'the Gallows' reminds me a bit of 'Tom Horn' .because the defendant didn't protest his condemnation nearly enough. a clear miscarriage of justice. Dillon's word should always be heeded by judges.

I still love this show. Chester, played awesomely by Dennis Weaver was the funniest charactor. I remember watching this show. The whole family would join together (in front of that old console TV set) to watch "Gunsmoke". My Dad loved Westerns, we watched nearly all of them. No one had cell phones, laptops, nor tablets. We survived without them back then. 💖

Near as I can figure, Marshal Dillon was shot 56 times, but I’ve heard the count could be higher. My figure includes: eight shots in the left arm, six in the left shoulder, four in the left side, one in the left leg, five in the right arm, five in the right shoulder, six in the right side, three in the right chest, four in the right leg, three forehead grazes, five in the back and several creases. The poor marshal was also knocked unconscious 29 times, stabbed three times and poisoned once. That’s a lot of blood loss!

CHESTER had been in the civil war and was no punk,notice every episode where he carried a rifle,he was a sharpshooter in the war,few knew that,chester backed matt all the way,just like festus did,a man like matt makes a sidekick grow a pair,even when nothing else did,that's what instills bravery in people ,just one solid rock person,and people follow and live right,right beside them,its the way of it

They never really said, but it's kind of applied in the civil war is how he got his knee blown out. of course, they just put a brace on which is why he could never bend his knee on his right leg again. He may have not been as smart as Matt, but he sure backed him when Matt needed it.

If you put together another one, there is a good line in season 6, episode 6. A couple guys in a bar are harassing Matt and say they are going to teach him a lesson.
