I'm Italian, I was 6 in 1971 and I remember very few things. One is the match of the soccer world cup Italy - Brazil, played the previous year, with Pele on the pitch. Another is this fantastic performance. You must know that, in those years, the audience on TV could not move, they could not get up, they could only applaud on command. Then came James Brown.

Paula´s Universe, agree to that. The dancer is Elza Soares, a Brazilian superstar, icon, singer and songwriter "Queen of Samba". So she was not a go go dancer at all. In this video she is 40 yo and a mother of four... Google her and there is a lot about her life and what happened to her. She was awarded "Singer of the Millenium" by BBC. For many yeras she was married to fotboll star Garrincha and they lived in Rome 1970 to 1971 something. So that i maybee an explaination why she is on this TV show. That was indeed very unexpected and a big surprise. She was globally a bigger star than JB himself, but funny thing is that I guess not many people in that TV show, or seeing this video, has any idea about that. Kindá sad really

I am convinced that funk was born when Bootsy laid into that opening bassline for Soul Power and Catfish, followed with those tight as hell guitar chords .. I can listen to that 20 secs of music forever. JB and BB were badasses.

I would love to see this in color. This performance was nothing less than perfect. The cats on horns were awesome. Bootsy Collins on bass was on point. Bobby Bird was truly the best ever hype man of all times. The background dancer held her own also. James was simply the best! Period!

Talking about performance! Wow! ❤️❤️❤️ He was one of the singers of my generation. In the early 70s there was no dance hall, school dance, or teenage house party without the music of James Brown. It was before Disco music 🎵 💃🏻 and it was dance music, it was doing the bump music, it was getting down music. I watched this particular music video and got goosebumps. RIP James Brown wherever you are and thank you for making so many teenagers dance and for bringing so much happiness to our lives.

And THIS is WHY James Brown will FOREVER be the GODFATHER of SOUL + FUNK. There will never be another one like him. EVER. I literally teared up when James walked off stage and went into the "all white" audience and shook peoples hands, and made that human CONNECTION. THANK YOU FOR THE MUSIC. Rest in eternal LOVE King!!! 👑 ❤ Go Bless you forever and ever. 🙏

I saw James Brown after he sobered up in the 90's. Most energy at a live show I've ever attended. Everyone was up dancing the whole show. Truly the hardest working man in show biz. The band was killer James still had the moves. Funk at its finest. RIP the Godfather of soil.
