Funny scene from "Jimmy the Gent", starring James Cagney and Bette Davis.
The farcical plot of the Warner Bros. release focuses on the unscrupulous Jimmy Corrigan (Cagney), who runs an agency that searches for heirs of those who have died without leaving a will and often provides phony claimants in order to collect his fee.
In his review in the New York Times, Mordaunt Hall described the film as "a brisk, slangy piece of work in which Mr. Cagney is as much of a pepper-pot as ever . . . [he] tackles the barbed argot of his lines with speed and force . . . Bette Davis is attractive and capable as Joan."
Movie: Jimmy the Gent (1934)
- The clip belongs to WB.

C no evil. Strange, BD may have thought so for a while, but she said in interviews how much she hated “The Bride Came COD”. She felt that their talents were quite different, disliked James Cagney then.

@@marjoriemargel1567 She disliked quite a few people but in the end usually came around. She rather famously hated Errol Flynn but many years later, watching one of his old movies with her pal, Olivia D., she turned to her and said, "I was wrong about him."

@@kevinkilduff2064 yes amazing actors, but I personally rate these 2 better, and I can't help feeling as good as Spencer tracy was, the praise that is has bestowed upon him is a tad overrated, remember, overrated doe not mean bad, but in context of how he's perceived, I honestly believe cagney was a great movie actor than Tracy, but do acknowledge the ability of him nevertheless🎥😊

James Cagney and Betty Davis were cut from the same cloth when God made these two extraordinary talents and somehow we were all lucky enough to see them. Movies have yet to produce the kind of talent in the years since they appeared together and not likely ever will.

Jimmy is so wonderful and magnetic as a personality. Bette mentioned in a 1970s interview that she wishes she could've done more with him. The electricity is fierce in this scene. They had a similar strength of personality that shines through here. The dialogue is witty and Jimmy is a hysterical comedian the way his lines bounce and crackle and his comic face-slaps at the end are sheer genius. I absolutely adore the way his slaps are so sudden and delivered with such shocking yet hysterical force! Sheer genius. All of that delivery takes great artistry and timing. Something which is sadly lacking in today's actors who lack intuition and are too overly trained. Cagney and Davis were highly intuitive talents and naturally gifted. No one can teach you at drama school how to be a Cagney or a Davis. It's innate.

In one of her autobios "The Lonely Life", Davis says she wished she'd done something fine with Cagney in addition to those two manic comedies.
