This was one of James Cagney's best movies. I can watch it over and over again and still cry at the end, every time.

He was the only white actor to attend Hattie McDaniels funeral. They were good friends and he didn’t care if anyone thought he was wrong. Class act all the way

I like how some folks, when Rocky starts pleading for his life, think it's an act and he's "Coming through" for his friend. Another reading might be that it was for real, and it was god coming through in the end for the Dead End Kids.

well there's no definite proof, one may ask, 'what was the point of the kids asking the Priest if Rocky really acted cowardly?' The way O'Brien hesitated tells all or at least says what I think that he really believes (that it was an act). If it was an act, Cagney displays a powerful message of Sacrifice and perhaps even forgiveness. If he really was cowardly, I think the priest wouldn't have been so hesitant, reluctant with the boys....and then again, the Priest had to subvert his own ego on telling the truth for the betterment of the boys as well.
