James missed his window of opportunity. His personality, crimes, and scandals aside, by modifying his content he probably lessened the number of people interested in makeup videos or his products. I think he will still earn money from launching his brand, but the longer he waits, the fewer people seem to care, particularly considering his reputation.

Well, yes and no. Trends have a huge impact on what customers want. Years ago no one would consider buying cream blush, then bam one blows up and now it's freaking everywhere. A good product will always be a good product, and a great one can start a new trend, but starting a brand just hoping yours will be that product is hella risky. It's much safer and wise to (at least at first) come up with great quality products that you already know people will like

Yeahhhh that is exactly what I was thinking, he seems so lost. This brand has been in development for so long and I get that maybe the products he had initially wanted to release might not make sense anymore, but damn it takes a lot of work and creative energy to develop a full range of products that are cohesive and work well together AND offer something unique in a market that is already oversaturated. It is kinda concerning that he is going to his audience for input and it is only the second product. If he had been polling his followers periodically over a year asking questions about their priorities as consumers I think that would be really smart, but this doesn't feel like R&D, it feels like "help give me ideas bc i don't know what to do!" and if that is true then WHY ARE YOU CREATING A MAKEUP BRAND JAMES?!?! Trends are guidelines that help inform what people are wanting but if you have a built-in following like James you can really go for it and do something that is a reflection of you, bc that is what your customer will want. I think Samantha Ravendahl's brand Auric is a great example of this. The fact that dewy glowy cream products were finally becoming trendy when her brand launched is a happy coincidence, but her brand was built largely around her struggle finding products that worked well on her super dry skin. When she started developing it that wasn't what was trendy, but she was able to take a bit of a risk knowing she had a following that would likely support her, but also probably knowing from the comments on her videos that she was not alone in wanting more products that worked well on dry skin. Her brand is not just a collection of random products, it has purpose and intention and would stand well on its own without her name behind it. Building a brand takes so much thought and vision and you need to know yourself, your POV, the industry, and your customer so well. It seems like James doesn't really know who he is right now and he is so detached from reality that I don't really think he knows much about the industry or his ideal customer either. You said it perfectly, he seems SO LOST.

I get the impresssionthat it's starting to hit home for him that luck and timing played a very big part in his success. This isn't even shade to him - no matter how talented you are, no matter how hard working, they'll only get you so far, especially in something like social media. For all make up is the thing that he's known for, he comes across as quite ignorant the way he's talking about how quickly make up trends move. As if this is something that he's just discovered from working behind the scenes on his own make up. He's not even trying to pivot it into a tangent of "it got me thinking, we should be moving away from trends like this, move to more sustainable outlook" and make his thing be about bringing the "slow fashion" mindset to make-up or something. He's just like "OMG, you guuuuys, trends move so quickly, as a social media influencer of 6 or 7 years I had no idea 😭".

How is it cringy? He is being thoughtful and taking his time, because people will put his products on their face. Imagine the outrage if those products will cause side effects like rashes, breakouts, etc. It's a long process perfecting the formula. As for asking his followers for ideas and opinions, I don't think it's a bad thing. He wants to include his fans and listens what they want or need. I wouldn't call it not being confident in his products, that's just perfecting it and adding last touches.
@yulana990
@yulana990 Жыл бұрын
James sucks ass, but y'all are starting to nitpick at this point. Since when is it "cringey" to try and create a product that your literal target audience enjoys? So many companies do surveys to figure out what to put out next, and try to find out the next trend etc. Its the same thing here, his target audience is his actual audience as an influencer, so he tries to figure out what the biggest "trends" are in that group and make something they'd use. Just like companied that focus on creating gothic lolita clothes, will see what the trends are in that specific community, ask for ideas and feedback, then go and create unique pieces. Its just how most companies work when they start out. Its also weird seeing some of y'all saying if he wasnt confident he wouldnt ask. Yet SO many makeuo brsnds in recent years have been called out for repeating the same boring stuff over and over and not listening to the clients wishes. A company being overly confident in something like makeup isnt always the best.

The one thing I hate about buying pallets is knowing half of the colors in the palette aren’t going to be used by me at all. That’s why I don’t buy them anymore. I think it’s a fantastic idea honestly for a “build your own pallet” concept. Let people build up their own mini pallets for face, and eyes. If it’s mini- then there’s no room to go overboard with buying product and wasting product because of shelf life and expiration dates and everyone has colors they ACTUALLY use. He can do a daily consumer use line with mini pallets and a pro line for professional makeup artists like me who need every skin tone in one pallet for easy travel. There’s still a market for makeup where consumers need this and hasn’t been executed to fit everyone’s basic daily essential needs and professional needs that don’t cost an arm and a leg like MAC Cosmetics and Makeup Forever have done.

the fact that even has the opportunity to launch something is crazy to me. after all the stuff hes been called out for how is he still able to have such a platform. and is he crazy 😅 i dont doubt that if he started a makeup brand back then he would have been a millionaire maybe even a multimillionaire but def not a billionaire lmao. also congratssss ur almost at 2 million 🎉🎉😚 keep up the grear work!!

I can say I lowkey hate that he is like asking people "what would make you interested in this?" One company that I think about when I think of unique products and concepts is aboutface by Halsey. Her brand is so her, so artsy without everything being "artistry palettes" you know? The unique tubes the liquid eye paints come in and how you could use them. I'm 24 with extremely sensitive skin. I can't even wear foundation, liquid or powder, blushes and contours because I will break out. My completion is pale with sever rosactia and I see a dermatologist. I wear eyebrow gel, eyeliner and mascara. Makeup interests me but not enough to buy it. Especially not from someone who constantly sexualizes minors

I think the reason it took 3 years is because JC used up every and any idea he had with his lab and all the prototypes keep turning out to be mediocre or most likely complete shit. That's the only reason why I can think of because he only has 1 product ready and turning to his fans for any more ideas after all this time lmao. It makes no sense for it to take 3 years for just 1 product (like 1 year is the norm and 2 years is understandable)

James has missed the window, for all the reasons mentioned in the video, but also the demographic of his audience and fans will factor in. Back in 2018 he was still 18-19 years old and sometimes it seems that he keeps living in that same era. The people who would have bought his brand 5 years ago before the pandemic now has their own issues, financial, going through college, family etc. So If I were him, I would have done a MAJOR market research to see if starting up such an endeavour would be profitable.

Honestly, James is irritating. I especially lost respect for him when those criminal allegations come out. I acknowledge he's talented at makeup but that's literally all he has going for him. That being said, personally, I feel like he really did lose his window of opportunity but rightfully so. However I can appreciate that he's actually seeking advice from the little support he has left, and all I can hope for is that if his brand ever does become successful, he gives the proper credit to those who helped him along the way.

Pushing all aspects of who James Charles is and how he picked a bad window to launch makeup (which we all know will be overpriced) aside, I actually really like that he's asking his consumers what they want. So many brands don't really care about the needs of their consumers, just what they think will make the most money

the "I don't like james but this product is amazing" thing is delusional imo. people who don't like him will not buy it. "hate buying" is just no something most people can afford, especially now. maybe a few beauty influencers who don't like him will review it but... that's only if they are willing to deal with the backlash of buying his products. I think he will "sell out" because he won't order very much product. his sample looked really boring to me... I wouldn't have even shown it tbh because it does not really get you excited for the rest of the brand. also, only having one product ready for his first launch seems... like an interesting choice.

I really like the empty palette idea. I tried to buy an empty palette at my local Nyx store pre-pandemic but it was sold out for months. James says, "The average consumer likes 'simple'." Well, the average consumer is also not going to spend $50+ on eyeshadow palettes anymore, especially if they're only going to use 2 colours out of 50. It's so wasteful, honestly. But if I can pick my go-to 3-4 shadows (nude, black, shimmery gold) and keep that customised palette on me at all times......... that would be amazing. During this pandemic..... make-up habits have changed, spending habits have changed. That tik tok comment honestly has a fantastic point. I haven't bought any makeup except 2 drugstore eyeliner pencils in 2 years. And I won't buy anymore for years to come. BUT............ if someone released a 'mix 'n match' option that would allow me to consolidate my fave colours into 1 or 2 minimalist palettes............. bruh.... that would be a reason to buy makeup. I could keep a mini kit of my main 3 colours at home, at my desk at work, in my purse at all times. And if there was some kind of tiny brush that would slide out, from the palette. Or if a larger palette.... when you opened it... imagine if it had a mirror, a gap on the side for your main brushes, and if the mirror was adjustable? Like instead of flopping around, I could adjust the tilt???? THAT is something I would spend $70 bucks on PLUS $10-20 per shadow (if the formula was good). Damn, how do I message James.

Based on his responses to the suggestions, I don't even think he's truly considering anyone's opinions or thoughts. I think he's trying to involve his followers more just to drive up the engagement, and to potentially reach more people. Not because he actually needs/wants anyone's help. It's just a marketing tactic to make people feel closer to him, the brand and the process. Kinda like what Shane and Jeffree did with the palette docuseries, but on a smaller scale.

My guess is that he's basically copying Trixie Mattel's makeup line, as in releasing a blush pallet with a gradient of three colors on each pallet, complete with cartoonish packaging. Since he keeps mentioning the blushes and blushes is how Trixie's line got it's start and how 'creative' the packaging will be. But his ascetic is very 'black and white minimalist' but half the makeup lines do that so the only option is 'colorful cartoon'. So... yeah, I think he's going to rip off a bunch of smaller influencers/drag artists and call it 'unique'.

Why is he asking for ideas from followers? As an entrepreneur YOU are the one with the ideas, and customers only give feedbacks. Only then you can decide to follow the feedback or not, without changing too much of the original idea. Customers LOVE to be included but not as the ones giving initial ideas.

I've just come to realize I don't need every new release of makeup. I just need the bare essentials. There's only so much makeup one person can use and it does expire. When I was buying in excess, half that shit was going expired before I could even use it. Money down the drain.

He sounds extremely unprofessional and insecure about the makeup line. The fact he’s showing failed blush samples feels messy and unprofessional. And asking for fans advice this late into releasing his brand just makes him sound nervous and unsure of himself. Changing his product/ brand so many times isn’t being a perfectionist, it’s called he can’t make up his mind and he doesn’t know what he’s doing. He over all just sounds very nervous and insecure which just does not look good especially as the owner and creative director of his company. And he can’t meet deadlines and is wasting his time and his employees time by not being able to complete his first product by a projected due date, which I’m sure is costing people money, not just himself. Having your lab “hate you” isn’t funny, it’s called he’s being difficult to work with and I’m sure he sourced a top tier makeup lab to produce his products.

To Many celebrities and influencers have their own unnecessary makeup brands that are flooding the market. Since inflation is so high, I think a lot of people are stepping back, trying to get all these different lipsticks and plattes that rang from 30 to 60 and up is just too much now.

I think its gunna be hard to push a whole brand. We are in the one hit wonder era where everything trends quick and fizzles quick. His best bet is to do one product good. Every tiktok you see these days are based off what product is trending not what brands are trending so if he wants to do something now all he is basically is to try to perfect one product and hope it sticks. its like hailey bieber.. she had a brand but her lip glosses is whats popular. He’s gotta move fast if he wants something to be successful

"I'm a perfectionist and didn't get my formula approved in time.." so is it because you're a perfectionist or the formula didn't get approved because without any extra information, that reason doesn't really make sense. The whole "perfectionist" title sounds like trying to make yourself seem so high and mighty with amazing standards but sounds ridiculous. The man who released makeup via Morphe is now a perfectionist 🤔

Honestly influencer brands just need to keep in mind the actual consumer. That is something Jeffree Star Cosmetics always got wrong - he made products that were a statement, rather than considerate of the consumer's actual realistic needs (this was peak evident in the Conspiracy palette, which shows zero interest in the consumer's actual product use needs). James Charles can actually grow past any criticism or negative opinions - deservedly or not - by focusing on making products consumers actually need. As someone who works a normal job, with limited time and budget to "play" with makeup, whether I buy something relies entirely on if it saves me effort, brainspace or physical space and will actually get used.
