I worked at the Tarte counter in Sephora (at the south of Spain) and they fired me when i told them that aaaaall the pressure they were putting on me to reach the daily sales goal, was making my mental health get worse. I thought it was fairly clear that Tarte isn't paying for 100% of everything. They probably collaborated with Emirates, the Ritz, tourism boards, etc. In this case, it's a mutually beneficial relationship because those companies can also benefit from influencers making content about their swanky hotels, flights, activities and so on. I don't think it's that deep, or at least nothing that hasn't been done before.

I use to work for Tarte as an Account Executive, the worse company ever! My team made so much money for Tarte, we had such high goals! There was no such thing as work/life/balance, it was a stressful toxic environment When we had our corporate meetings in the United States, they made the Account Executives share a room plus they made us buy the cheapest flight even if it had layovers (a two-hour direct flight $400, $325 4 hour layover) Each year they spent so much money on influencers instead of their hard-working employees. Plus they laid off 90% of the field team during covid. I am so happy they are finally being exposed. If you are ever at Sephora or Ulta, please don't buy Tarte cosmetics What makes me laugh is their new GLOW is a knock off of Charlotte Tilbury and Hourglass cosmetics.

Having spent extensive time in the middle east, UAE (where Dubai is located) is absolutely funding a huge portion of the trip. They heavily leverage things like this to aid their image and tourism. Sadly most people who visit UAE only visit Dubai and only the few miles that is heavily catered to westerners (along with heavily edited trips to the desert for a camel ride or ATVs/SUVs). So it's a very different world outside of that small area. Amazing food and best brunch you can ever get in the high end western hotels!

i work in marketing i have been DYINGG to talk about this! this is literally probably only the budget for tarte in Q1. if they spent 2mil on this trip, i have to imagine their actual marketing budget is 8-10mil. during covid, tarte actually did impressively well after adding on a virtual try on section to their website w fairly accurate online color matching for foundations. they also have spent less on marketing in the last few years, meaning they likely rolled over excess marketing budgets each year until they deemed covid officially over lol but i also am predicting a huge push away from influencer marketing in the future. influencers tend to be hard to work with and don’t really care when u give them a contract. i’ve gotten influencer quotes from people w less than 100k followers that are literally less feasible than a times square billboard and gen z isn’t really… liking it the way we thought they would!! they are quick to call brands out on sponsorships and quick to let other people know that a post is sponsored if a recommendation is made at all. focusing lately on promoting organic content from real customers has been yielding better results in my experience (not hiring UGC creators also - i mean real customers lmao)

Ok so I work in influencer marketing for similar beauty brands. Here's my take: -Beauty is usually bullet proof to recessions. It's a small splurge that makes people more happy in a depressing season like this one. With covid, makeup sales were affected by it, but skincare rose like never before. -Even if you don't think Emirates or The Ritz is benefiting from this trip, they are. Teenagers on Tiktok can be rich too, and they are seeing all these posts just like us. It's very easy for them to work with Parte and give their services for free or a discount, in exchange for the mentions. They don't even have to put money on it, it's somewhat free advertising. -Brand trips and brand events are smarter from a financial POV than traditional advertising or even normal influencer posts. Influencers make organic content since they're not charging the brand for each story or post they make. -Also, they reach a wider number of people, and like this trip is proving, it generates constant conversation around the brand. Whether people hate the trip or not, they are all talking about it on TikTok. The name Tarte is popping off time and time again, and newcomers to makeup whom are on TikTok now but missed beauty YT since they were kids, are learning about the brand. These strategies are about awareness and positioning, NOT about direct sales. -About the donations thing, idk about Tarte but at least the brand I work with all have social causes they donate money to annually. People don't really care, even when they say they do lmao.

I've never worked in Tarte nor a cosmetic company but I did in a private school and oh girl, almost all (if not all) companies only think about bringing money into their wallets but 0 to their workers' payment, psychological or medical services and let's not even mention the fact they want you to "love your job" when they don't even give you paid vacations (or even give you free days at all)

I feel like the clean and no make up look is so In right now. I would like to see a company do a philanthropy trip get influencers that want to /are known to give back or are activists. Tarte has always had a really poor eyeshadow formula set imo. Also I remember thinking in 2016 how I didn't like these new "influencers" coming out. I look back and wish so much to go back to then... I literally never trust their recommendations if it's in any way affiliated... The fact that we've allowed people to use parasocial relationships to shill a product is super sad.

The last thing I had from their line is the maneater mascara. It's been quite some time since I shopped their brand. I don't begrudge these influencers because they went on some trip to Dubai. What I am concerned about is the way women and children are treated in some middle eastern countries. I mean when women are literally excluded from earning a college degree, it speaks to the misogyny of the country. I can't sugar coat this topic when women are being treated like second class citizens. It's the same old story from some of these countries, over and over again.

Just about the tourism Dubai part, (I saw all this on a tiktok but I cannot find the tiktok creator for the life of me so if anyone finds them please comment their user) they’re not staying in Dubai they’re staying in one of the emirates of UAE (think of an emirate like a US state) and are over an hour from the city of Dubai, the creator of the tiktok said that this may mean that Dubai’s tourism board would then therefore not pay towards this trip like others have suggested. Not saying this is fact at all because I’m unsure how it all works but it was very interesting. My opinion on the backlash from this trip is that since covid people have become more focused on influencers who feel more connected to us (such as those who still work normal jobs and haven’t let influencing detach them from normal society), seeing these tiktokers being taken on a trip the majority of us can only dream of really distances these creators from us

It's not the trips that confuse me, it's the fact that these are tiktok people. I'm not disparaging their content, but I think they're just lucky enough to be recommended. That is, unlike youtube, these people have worked less, and as if their popularity is not as deserved as people from youtube.

as a consumer, i'm so against seeing brands send out influencers for these trips. it always feels so fake to me - but on the marketing side as someone who works in the industry, this is for sure the cheaper alternative than creating a tv creative and you really don't see the numbers in tv like you do with some of these influencers on IG + tik tok. plus TV doesn't reach these younger demographics like these influencers do. for sure not a tax write off this trip, but dubai being dubai, i wouldn't be shocked if dubai was involved and they gave some discount to promote going there as well. i mean even this video is giving the brand free PR and exposed to a different audience

Sad that already rich influencers going on a trip like this makes someone want to buy the products? Let’s remember we are in control of who we give views and platforms to. Write offs 100% not only the trips but that donation too.

Yeah, I thought brand trips were called out because these influencers bring nothing to the table and like every brand, just a face, with no personality. Brand trips should've been for the CONSUMER/THE WORKING CLASS/THOSE WHO CANT AFFORD IT. instead, we get, in my own OPINION, tiktok make up reviewers who aren't even that good. *cough* Mikaela and that gross foundation girl? Meredith??? Also what's with their entitled personalities lately. Celebrities too. Im getting pretty sick of it. Just vecause you have money doesn't mean you can buy a personality. Half a million is way less than commercial slots and magazines...with probably not as much sales Seems like people are jealous of the influencers who get the invite for the trip. Brands are making a lot of sales, even 2 million is nothing for a huge brand like Tarte and these influencers got a once in a lifetime trip. They did all the work to grow their following, now they got a brand trip. Good for them

I think is just doing huge leap of faith with this trip, hoping that the influencer marketing will get up to its finest. And getting so many influencers to post exclusively about your brand for a couple of days on their insta/tiktok... and even record some longer review afterwards... while they are happy/rested/sunkissed after holidays? I bet this is all cheaper if they requested the same of sponsored posts. It also creates positive association in this influencer head, so they want to like the priducts. Because not only you get free vacation, you also get an amazing networking opportunity and the "it-girl/boy" label. I guess most of the swag they get is for free, as other brands also want a chance of a shoutout (they might even pay to benefit to be included). I agree that it is out of touch a bit, that they sell mediocre mascara for that expensive, it makes you wonder how much of the price goes to marketing. But I still think it is better than huuuuge expensive giftbags brands give away at Oscars, just hoping that some celebrity some day maybe is photographed with their product. It is so annoying that rich people get so much stuff for free. Stuff that they didn't even wanted/asked for. I wonder how much of this swag ends up in a landfill...

This is the PRIME example of marketing gone right. Let me explain as a marketer who is going to graduate this semester: The Ritz Carlton Emirates and all the other products in those trips are sponsored. Tarte hardly pays for ANYTHING. These companies hope that these influencers market them on their socials. That’s why you see them recording on the plane and explaining “how amazing” all these things are! Then recording at the hotel and showing off how beautiful the hotel is. This is not the first time Emirates gives influencers for free to fly their airline. All over TikTok you see influencers showing how amazing emirates is, why? Because if you give a free flight on Emirates, Emirates expects them to make a video. So yeah, that’s how Tarte and other countries can do these extravagant trips and give out all these amazing items like Bose speakers etc. what does this do? Bring up conversations. Tarte literally wanted this to happen so that everyone talks about them. Technically they didn’t do anything wrong, because they didn’t spend much. The article you gave as an example said estimated price tarte paid but in reality they didn’t pay. At the end of the day, people have a choice to buy their products.
