I think tik tok is for watching people you don’t know. While instagram you actually want to see the people you know or interested in seeing.

The last thing a Instagram needs right now is to use it’s horrible algorithm. The discovery page is already bad enough and makes me feel triggered and bad about myself. The platform is no longer a social media app, but instead, just a platform to sell you items/ideas about yourself.

I literally hate that my home page is covered with nothing but recommended users for me to follow. I like seeing my friends and people I follow on my Home Screen to see what is the latest. It’s mad annoying and I wish there was less.

I honestly feel like these apps need to stop competing with TikTok it’s getting really annoying, especially for ig. I go to ig for the pics not for the videos that’s why I have the TikTok app in the first place. There apps need to play into there strengths because that’s the reason why people have the apps for a reason. We all have these apps bc we like what they do separately, it’s not crazy to have different apps bc you like what those apps can offer you🤷🏾‍♀️ these companies need to get it together

The one time I agree with problematic celebrities. I don’t want random accounts and photos. I just want to see my friends and the hashtags I follow. The only reason why people started posting Reels was because TikTok’s algorithm is crap. With this change, creators are getting the same problem on IG.

I got the demo version of ig and I hated it so much i stopped using ig for like 2 weeks. I randomly checked and it was gone. Was horrible. I think everyone hates the random posts on their main feed. So annoying

This is a perfect example of “If you don’t like it don’t use it” and when the people listen and ditch IG, they’ll be scrambling to win you back. If you want change, everyone should take a IG break for a few months. Let them see the shift in app usage since their “experiment”

Small business owner/clay earring artist here - instagram has changed so much for the worse that I’ve had to get a part time job on top of my full time job of creating and doing what I love. I had so much engagement last year, now this year I’m only getting a few likes and no engagement. It’s hurt my business greatly and I’m so so sad about it. James is absolutely right.

I literally started using Instagram more because of how toxic TikTok app is for me, I really mentally can’t do another brainwashing app.. it’s over consuming!! To the point where I’m turned off and want Instagram back

I get that things need to change and evolve, but I just feel like Instagram is changing for the worst. The only best decision they ever made for that app is when they took Snapchat to insta by making insta-stories. But now all the changes they are making are just getting out of hand at this point.

I hate hate hate the new Instagram algorithm. I’ve recently seen an influx of sexual content that I don’t follow and same with normal content I don’t follow. I almost NEVER see the posts of pages and people I follow. Like finding out a friend is pregnant months after an announcement because it never came across my feed. It’s wild.

the picture vs video thing is no where near as aggravating to me as getting random posts from people I don't follow and have no interest in following on my feed when I am trying to look at my friends posts. Sends me right up the wall every time.

I wish Instagram took a more vintage or even nostalgic route. It should be about photo sharing and making your photo album come to life. Remember the old app icon? Amazing. Polaroid is the way. I lost any respect I had for Instagram when they acknowledged the problems their platform/algorithm causes (especially among teen girls) but they don’t care because $$$.

I deleted my instagram when I went on a social media hiatus and so I didn’t have instagram for 2 years and I downloaded it again the other day and it’s literally a whole different app - I don’t know how to use it and it’s just so awful not like how it used to be. Sad. Bring back the OG instagram. The FIRST instagram. That was the shit. All of us using filters on random square photos because we couldn’t make it any bigger than a square. Loved that.

Full screen on ig was awful, I kept sending support tickets to complain about the “features” that were forced on me till it went back to normal. The UI is terrible and I really doubt they tested it extensively before this

Whats the point in following friends and things you like if you rarely ever see their content? If they want the discovery page to be Tiktok then whatever-- thats fine. I have never agreed with James ever but today is a new day I guess. For once I am glad he has a no holds back attiude when it comes to speaking his mind. He is absolutely correct. I posted a reel of my process of drawing and it got 20 likes in under an hour, I posted the finish drawing in a standard post and it has barely 5 likes after 2 weeks, bare in mind both have hastags and all the fixings I used to use to promote my art. I am literally being forced to play into the narrative Instagram wants cause I want to grow my art and my reach and this is the only way to do it. But I am somone who doesn't like tiktok and will never go on it. I hate the vibes I get from it personally but thats fine if you do and thats why seperate apps is important on both ends!

I've been a insta og since it came out. I loved how insta was a way to escape the drama of Facebook. Has people my age who have grown up with the evolution of the internet. I absolutely hate insta now. I stay on Tumblr because it's what insta was. It was simple. Now it's ads galour, tik toks, random shops, sponsored posts.

I HATED the update. I removed IG from my Home Screen! was so happy when they changed it back. I guarantee they seen a decline in how much people used the app because It went from being my most used app to barley anything.

I got the full screen test and I hated it so much I tryed go back to an earlier version of instagram the way it adds a different colour background to make every post full screen often being white blinding you and making dark mode usless, the description of the post always white so you can't read it half the time, the weird "shadow" they ad to the top and bottom of every post, the way it snaps the each post so you can't just scroll you have to swipe,never showing you the people you follow, showing you random posts that may or may not be interested in not related to the update realy but the targeted ads backed on the gender you pout on face book that you can't change (I'm Nb but my facebook is set to female so I get constant ads for baby thing I don't want kids and never have

i wonder how many young and up to date people these social media companies have on their team. i’m convinced it’s zero. instagram is seriously the only social media photo app there is, WHY would they think the right way to go is to become more video-centric when every other app is already based on videos (besides twitter)? instagram is trying to become a monopoly by taking features from the other apps so that people won’t feel the need to use any other apps. there was no reason they needed to add stories when we already had snapchat and there’s no reason they need to add *more* videos when we already have tik tok. everybody just needs to do their part. majority of instagram is stolen content from twitter and tik tok anyway girl you’re already the 3rd option, don’t get deleted 💀

I think what these apps don't understand is that I'm not gonna keep 20 versions of the same app on my phone, and tiktok did it first. Instagram was fine as just photos and a few videos. When they added stories, I was even cool with that. But now they're doing too much.

Actually totally with james charles & other celebs on this one and happy they are speaking up. i use each social media for something different, and instagram has always been my favorite because it was about just sharing mostly pictures with my friends, seeing what they’re up to, like its a photo diary. Sure I followed some influencers and businesses too, but it sounds like these algorithm changes aren’t even helping them either since we don’t even see who we follow anymore!

As an Artist (digital artist) it's hard to grow. I really want to go back. My reach was amazing back before Corona and I was growing in the circle of people with same intrests. But then slowly my reach went to shit and I just lost so much motivation due to being pushed to do videos which I have no time for or interest. I enjoyed posting my art pieces at a time I was comfortable without worrying if my reach would drop due to inactivity or due to it not being visible cause it's not a reel. It first hit us with you gotta be active so people see your stuff, but then it went you can't be too active, but then it was like be active on reels and occasionally reach for your photo post might catch a good wave if you do something that is trending and now it's only if you do reels you get exposure. My friend was posting amazing art and barely got 10 followers but moment she made a half ass reel, 100+ followers came. She was so sad because she doesn't want to focus on reels only, but also pat attention to her full finished pieces. And why reels are also shit is because we cannot reach a good range of people who might be interested in commissioning us, because our commission posts have no reach. Some of my friends live as free lance artists and the algorithm is not helping at all. Arists and small businesses have it the hardest and they argue against same problems because they are in a same spot.

This is why I keep saying not having social media is the best

There's a reason I have an IG account and not a TikTok account. I enjoy watching stranger's humors and edits on TikTok while I go to IG to see what my family and friends are doing and maybe check the explore tab but that's it.

I don't use Instagram anymore but what I do think of these changes that they might be making to the app I can see it from both sides, I can see that Instagram wants to move on with the rest of the world and grow their platform to make it an even more enjoyable experience. but I can also see it from the creator's point of view too if they don't want any changes to happen to the app and they are happy with just photos and are also not happy with not seeing their friend's post and ending up on their home page. well, I think Instagram really needs to listen to their users to see what they want and how they can make it a better experience for everyone. 😁

I'm really impressed by James Charles' responses to the changes... both the video & comment are exactly the type of feedback you want in the corporate space because it talks directly to the business impacts to creators. Most importantly, he provides _insights_ into what the true negative impacts are.... it's very common for corporates to conflate data, and his point about the rise in video content being caused by Instagram's other changes (not organic user behaviour) is _gold._ Not at all surprised that the Kardashian's efforts were just reposting someone else's work though.
