Shein is so so so gross. I don't think influencers should be supporting or purchasing from them when there are small businesses who likely have reasonable prices and would love to collab! I also know shopping sustainably (I know, there's really no such thing as sustainable fashion, only slow fashion) can be hard/expensive but there are 2 really affordable "sustainable" ways! Doing clothing swaps with friends or even going to clothing swap meets is a great way to get new clothes and thrifting! James could have EASILY gotten his friends to do a closet swap with each other and himself for a week and it would have been equally entertaining to his fans.

My main issue with a lot of the ethical/sustainable brands is that often times they are expensive and usually not my style. So I've just been buying secondhand from different places, and whatever clothing I do own I wear until they're completely broken down.

I don't get why he's at fault for this. Literally everyone knows Shein already as it's a viral brand. Shein is a way for a lot of people to get clothes they would have to spend much more money on or couldn't find! I found some stuff I'd never find at a shop for this price or at any price (like a swimsuit with shorts). Also fast fashion is literally everywhere and suddenly it's him promoting pollution? As for the prices I've seen way cheaper clothes (also cotton) from bazzars and local markets because they don't pay for rent, workers etc so it's nothing new for me.

Honestly, this is just people being mean for the sake of being mean: There are far more fast fashion brands than Shein (including Zara) where some products are just as cheap, made out of plastic and probably produced by underpaid children in Bangladesh and women in China. Yes, he should not have given this brand his attention but I am certain that most of the people criticising him for that don't own custom-made clothes made out of high-quality cotton, linen or recycled material and cost a reasonable price to support the manufacturer(s) with fair pay because that would be at least 130€ for one piece.

Even though I don't like James Charles and I don't support him or his actions at all, I do think that the reactions to his video are pretty hypocritical. Yes, it's true that companies like She-In shouldn't be supported, but to be fair companies like Zara, H&M, Nike, Hollister, Forever21 and even Apple are just as bad. And those are just some examples. The problem are not only those cheap brands. Sadly, lost of luxury brands (Prada, Armani, Burberry, Dolce & Gabbana, Louis Vuitton etc.) produce under the worst conditions in Asian countries as well, but people don't hate on those because they sell their clothes for a very high price and are therefore considered to be fashionable and chic. Also, it's not just the fashion industry that has those horrible ethics. Whether it's electronics, automobiles, furniture, they all try to produce their products for as cheap as possible to then sell it for the highest price as possible in order to make the most money. IKEA literally gets some of their wood from places where it's illegal to chop down the trees, but people are still supporting them. And to be honest, this won't change anytime soon because, just like She-In, those brands are cheap and therefore sometimes the only option that a lot of people can afford. So yeah, the only option to solve this problem would be to only buy from brands that are proven to produce economically friendly under good working conditions and with fairly traded materials. But those companies are very rare and also tend to sell their products for a higher price, because the production costs are a lot higher as well. And not everyone can afford that. Also, you could go thrifting of course, but thriftig is always a hit and miss. You can't always find what you're looking for in the size that you need and if you live in a more rural area then there also aren't usually a lot of thrifting stores available. I personally tried to thrift online before and I mainly had bad experiences with that... So, long story short, blaming people for shopping at She-In makes you a hypocrite if you yourself are buying at any other brand instead of those proven to be economically friendly.

People are acting like other brands care about the environment. Spoiler: they don’t. In New Zealand/aus there’s annual sustainability reports done on different large clothing brands, and often times the more expensive brands get horrible grades. Don’t get me wrong, they’re better than Shein but let’s not act like other brands are saints. And just as a disclaimer; I don’t buy cheap shit because I can afford not to do that. But I don’t think it’s fair to judge people if they genuinely want to get affordable and fashionable clothing. I know shein is so problematic outside of sustainability (like workers wages and design integrity), but the price point is the main allure to people.

Totally agree with this. When clothes are seen as a temporary item, people feel pushed to keep buying more and more to fit with the trends, and have to look for the chepest places to afford that. But if the perspective switched, if more people felt okay wearing the same outfit/article of clothing hundreds of times, if more people fixed things rather than throwing them out, then people wouldnt feel pushed to buy 20 cheap items over buying 5 better quality items for the same price. Or even buying 20 cheap things and looking after and wearing them for years is still better than buiying 20 cheap things a month to fit with the current microtrend.

Oh, James. When will he learn? The answer: He won't. Which is why Tea Spill will always make these gems😉

The thing with shein though is that the quality of clothes doesnt even last long enough so you end up spending even more money than if you were to just buy from slightly more expensive stores

Yeah but other big influencers do Shein hauls, even little ones do it to. Why are we only focusing on James doing it? It feels a little 'pick me' at this point

I was a shien user I bought about 6 items and I only wear 1 thing...and I feel so bad I wasn't doing my research I just wanted to have "trendy clothes" at an affordable price. But now I ONLY purchase from old navy because the quality and prices are there.

i mainly have went to shein to buy things like jewelry and accessories that i know i will use time and time again, i think the main issue is buying loads of crap you KNOW you will end up throwing away or donating, i’ve been to thrift stores over the past few months and have seen sections with just Shein/Romwe labeled items and it’s sad

Some many people buy off shein but no offence soon as he buys it its suddenly a big deal. Like most them people makin comments are wearing their clothing watching it, its so funny

What’s funny is the same people who are complaining about him buying off of shein are probably the same people that shop at Forever 21, Zara, etc, (who are also notorious for fast fashion) religiously. I detest James, but I really feel like people are picking and choosing who/what to get mad at.

All right people if you're gonna call out James for buying stuff from SHEIN, you WILL call out all the other influencers that support SHEIN as well. Deal? Deal.

I'm a crocheter/knitter and many of the creators/sellers I follow have their exact outfits/creations stolen by Shein. Even as of 4 days ago. For one of the patterns I bought I got an email saying "we are aware that one of our patterns was stolen by a big fast fashion site...." the pattern had just gone up not long before and Shein already had it on their site.

I really feel like people are blowing it out of proportion. He wouldn’t have been able to do this video if a massive amount of his audience probably purchase from them. And donate your clothes to prevent waste

with as big of a platform as he still has, its not blowing it out of proportion in my opinion. Shein has shady business practices as well as overall promotion of fast fashion being extremely bad. nobody with that large of a platform should be encouraging that amount of environmental damage, and donating clothing wont fix it.

People that buy fast fashion out of necessity cherish their clothes, take good care of them and wear them for _years_ . (As long as they don't break) Maybe it's because I went through, and finished my growth spurt really quickly but I still have jeans from late *elementary school* that I wear regularly. They're basics, so basically time and ageless. I pair them up in nice combos and you can't tell that I'm wearing something from like 6 years ago. That's sustainability.
