This is one of my all time favorite scenes from a romantic comedy.
BOYS' NIGHT OUT (1962) was produced by its star Kim Novak who was making a career comeback and isn't even in this, the best scene from the film.
BOYS' NIGHT OUT is in a sub-genre that really only existed in the 1960s - "Men rebelling against suburban domestication by cheating on their wives" movies. This one and others in the genre, like GUIDE FOR A MARRIED MAN and THE APARTMENT, were considered the ultimate is sophisticated comedy at the time and socially acceptable because the heroes never wound up actually cheating, instead growing to accept and love their domestication.
In this scene single guy Fred (James Garner), a weatherman who has forecast rain that hasn't arrived yet, has been sent by his married buddies to find them a "cheap" luxury apartment they can use as a place to cheat and meets rental agent Peter Bowers (Jim Backus), who is mysteriously desperate to find a tenant for an awesome NYC apartment.
A huge viewing bonus: all of the incredible mid-century modern furniture and art decorating the set.

My favorite scene was Tony Randall’s story time on the train. In each scene he’d begin telling a story and invariably a very loud intrusive sound would begin to drown him out until not one word was discernible. The guys would try desperately to make out what he was saying and then just as the deafening sound would stopped, Tony would say and that’s the whole story.....or something to that effect. Made my brother and me laugh uncontrollably everytime! Oh what a movie!! Thank you for sharing this!!

Saw this on one of the movie channels a few months ago. Really holds up well for a film over 50 years old, lots of funny lines. Sadly, all the principal actors except Kim Novak are now deceased.

$200 back then was like paying $1700 today. Even for the city, that's still a steal, no?

Notice when they walk into the bedroom the music swirls up as if they are entering a fantasy land for the adult male.

This was Jim Backus’ only scene in the movie and he steals the ENTIRE film in 5 short minutes.
