@@stephengrigg5988 Yeah, he may have, my point was more so to the original comment saying James won’t let people forget, when there really isn’t much to forget when the man handing out the award himself was responsible for racist attacks. Explaining the amount of confidence and miseducation some people have, in themselves and their "preferences" or "beliefs" over others, can be very difficult, sometimes. I just saw tiktok of a young Asian woman, responding to a comment on a previous post, which said something about being more grateful for the white people who invented her iphone. I wish I could link it, because her response was exemplary in explaining how different people, of different ethnicities, invented different technologies, in different eras, that all led to the "invention" of our phones. How history is taught to, at the least, puff some people up as if their people were the only heroes, if not also ignore or remove the histories of "others", to continue their superiority complex. We're seeing it again, with the "who cares??" folk, who still don't want to acknowledge the significance of this moment, for Asian history, film history, and human history.
@blah4151
@blah4151 Жыл бұрын
You have to aware of the time period in which stuff like that happened. Society had way less celebrities back in the day and name recognition was one of the most important factors when casting stars. So back then you would see movies casting the same handful of actors over and over again. You check out some actors filmographies and you'll see them be in multiple movies released in a very small time frame. It created a vicious cycle that prevented other actors from getting big roles. This also effected POC but I won't say racism was the only factor or a non-factor. If you were to make a movie at the time and wanted it to make a profit, would you cast the guy named Jing Pei that no one has ever heard of or are you gonna cast the dude that was in seven box office smashers? If you go further back in time you'll also remember that white dudes played the female roles in Shakespeare plays. So over time we have progressed as a society when it comes to properly representing people when telling stories. Good movies, shows, whatever will always get acknowledged regardless of who is in them.

The guy perpetuated Asian stereotypes by only accepting those kinds of roles.

If someone has shown themselves to not be that person or like that person anymore, and they've grown up, there's no reason to deny them such a career. I highly doubt the man - or at least doubt he still is - a racist, or someone prone to racial violence. Also, as a celebrity/movie star, he's used his fame for charitable causes and philanthropic endeavors. So his being a movie star, and the rewards it brings, has been beneficial to others.
