This is exactly why blue flags were introduced. Every time I see a call for blue flags to be removed, I remember this. Always better to ruin a midfield or backmarkers race by letting the leaders through than the battle for the lead spoiled by a jealous and bitter slowpoke.

Blue flags should only be shown on any straight and not in the corners because when you have two back markers fighting and one of them lets you trough it ends up costing one of the their own position vs the other car.

He is right, use your skill and overtake lapped cars or only have blue flags in one section of the track, like on the straights. If you dont poses enough to overtake lapped car than your rival will catch you= more entertainment.

Good old James he and Murray were absolutely brilliant only matched in my Opinion by Murray and Martin. Really hillarious some of his lines and comments and totally agree with him Jarrier allways did this he was out of order very often often interfering in the race lead not letting them through. In those days blue flags were waved but the drivers wernt forced to let the lead drivers through like nowadays it was more of a gentlemans sporting thing to do to let people through. Its so good now that the blue flags are enforced jarrier would not get away with his antics these days 😊😊

When F1 existed and most of its drivers were the toughest type of men, they needed no nannying, and they knew that racing was more than calmly going faster than the cars positioned fore and aft. Hunt was funny, fair and fiery in a quintessentially English way, but he did moan on a bit too much about the trouble that the best had getting past the worst. It's a distinct skill now lost, and it disappeared when the limp Blue Flag began flapping.

Hunt wasn't always right, but was always entertaining. F1 would be a lot more entertaining if they went back to making blue flags advisory. Senna wouldn't have been as successful, and Mansell would have been nothing, if not for their advantage in traffic, which today would be neutralised by blue flag enforcement.
@philwoodward5069
@philwoodward5069 6 жыл бұрын
You misunderstand: I know blue flags used to be advisory and I want F1 to go back to them being advisory. I think blue flag enforcement is wholly bad for the sport. I can't see any up-side to it. This clip has been posted for a reason - the incident between Jarier and Alliot was entertaining, yet it wouldn't have happened if that race in 1983 had been run to 2017 sporting rules. Why are we policing all the unpredictability out of racing these days? If you are quick enough to catch somebody to lap them, you should be quick enough to get past without help from Race Control. If you can't get past, you should be stuck there for the rest of the race and that should be regarded as the faster driver's problem and also a problem for the designers of race-winning cars, not a problem for the slower cars or the FIA. Ability to get past backmarkers used to be a performance differentiator between championship contenders. Now, the big teams know it's far easier to go crying to Charlie Whiting than to grapple with the technical challenge of making sure they build cars that can race, not just cars that are quick in clear air. That hurts racing generally.
