Lauda was cynical in racing and in business for family matters (his grandfather in particular, born in the Habsburg era). He tried to prove that his idea was not wrong, and this necessitated, in an age where people died easily on the slopes, to avoid unnecessary weaknesses. He was unpleasant even in the Ferrari team, for the fussiness at work (he was the new figure of the pilot-mechanic specialized) but outside he was pleasant and sociable, as a gentleman of the very high Austrian bourgeoisie can be.

In a way, since Niki himself passed away in 2019, I comfort myself by thinking of James Hunt telling him about how happy he was when he died and how proud he was of Niki not only for his accomplishments as a driver, but what he achieved later (like setting up Lauda Air and helping Mercedes reach that unprecedented level of success that they had between 2014 and 2021, securing 8 Constructors Titles and 7 Drivers Titles in that time)

When he spoke if James death, man he seemed sad. The movie portrayed near to zero love but wow...thats rivalry that held true love and admiration for each other. He wanted him back on his feet and happy which happened. The impact they had on each other to push through it all was unreal. 2 legends gone but enjoying each other company again I hope.

This is why Lauda said he had no friends. His real friends (and sometimes enemies) were in the Grid. His best friend was Hunt. Quite obviously. I would say even more, he helped him like a brother would do.

I remember watching the race on TV with my dad when he had his incident at Nurburgring in 76. Took a long time for the announcer to tell what had happened. And even knowing he was not my dad's favorite driver at the time. He gained so much respect for getting back in a car and race the way he did. A true legend at part with Sir Jackie Steward, Fittipaldi, Andretti, and many more.

We like people for their qualities but we love them for their defects. Lauda and Hunt, two of the most opposite people on the planet, had a fantastic friendship and respect for each other that is worth remembering.

I remember working at the theater and Rush was one of the upcoming movies. It kinda intrigued me but that was it. Just thought it was a fictional movie about racing. So 10 years later, yesterday, I actually just watched it the other night when I came home late from work. Didn’t have anything to watch so found it on Netflix. I was hooked from the start. Realized these guys were real since I had no knowledge of formula one. Of course I’m sure the movie took some liberties but I really thought it was a great movie. Daniel Bruhl’s acting was top notch and Hemsworth made me forget he was Thor. And as always Graham’s interview was very enjoyable.

In December 2010 I went for a Flight from Karlsruhe/Baden Baden to Vienna and when my Friend Wolfgang Booked the Flight with me , here was Niki Laudas Airline of which I had no idea that it existed ! Guess what ? I chose Lauda Air -Fly With Niki , I was stoked because I liked Niki Lauda when he was Racing in Formula 1 but had no idea of his life after he retired from Racing ! Whenever I can , and I do , I listen , watch Videos of Niki Lauda Interviews , everything ! That Man is a Legend and , what I like about Niki is , He Tells it Straight , how he sees it , no Bullshitting around with this Man ! I would Love to meet him , just to shake his Hand !

Flew with him as captain from Frankfurt Main to Vienna and I felt like a ten year old the night before Christmas. Almost everybody did and absolutely everyone on the plaine used the front exit and took a photo of him in the cockpit.

The enjoyable fiction of Lauda vs Hunt in Rush is just that. James was a good racing driver, and his championship was hard won, but Niki is a legend. A legend who, had it not been for _the_ crash, almost definitely would have won the title. James won the title by one point from Niki, who missed two races.
