“I’m a Walter Mitty who’s actually done it.” Growing up in a tenement on the outskirts of Glasgow, Midge Ure dreamt of being a rock star, even though it seemed impossible for a working-class kid like him. But he had something special.
At just 18, he got his first break as the guitarist for the pop band Slik and went on to be part of several influential bands in the 1970s and 80s, including Rich Kids, Thin Lizzy and Ultravox. Alongside Bob Geldof, he set up Band Aid, collaborating on the 1984 hit Do They Know It's Christmas? With a career spanning over 50 years, he has firmly established himself as a rock legend, making all his dreams come true.

In Canada my radio station manager pulled me up in '91 for playing Cold, Cold Heart twice an hour. I told him, "You don't understand anything, do you?"

First saw Midge in ‘74 with Slik. Saw him again a few years ago as a solo artist and he is an excellent performer. There were some other big names on the bill but when they announced Midge and he walked on, the whole place sat up a bit straighter and the atmosphere went up more than a few notches.

A very interesting and entertaining interview. I know it's not O'Brien's brief, but I feel sometimes that he could dig a bit deeper and that he too often revels in his own thoughts, which is fine for the radio show but not an interview. Unless I'm wrong! Which I probably am.

Massive fan of both versions of Ultravox. The Foxx era, and the Ure era. A highly underrated band, who attracted unfair criticism in their heyday. Punks disliked them for being too arty. PostPunks disliked them for not being arty enough. And the New Romantics saw them, as too old. Musical tribalism. You can’t beat it.

One of the most depressing socialists in the world interviews a "working-class kid" who literally made it from the bottom to "rock legend" status through the fruits of his labour, i.e. capitalism. Oh the irony. (Nothing against Ure, I just don't like O'Brian the angry socialist).
