It's actually called "television". Coming from the Greek "tele" (meaning far away) and the Latin "visio" (meaning sight). So it translates into seeing something that is far away and has nothing to with telling a vision. Easy mistake though.

Corn laws, poor laws, Irish free state, women's suffrage, slavery, gay rights, end of segregation, the Bristol bus boycott... I think there's literally never been a protest movement followed by change that has not involved serious disruption to civil normality, and been criticised at the time on exactly the same grounds. This amounts to "protest never achieves anything", with the direct and unavoidable implication that (for example) the civil rights movement in America or the suffragettes in the UK only delayed and impeded inevitable top-down change. I know some people argue exactly that, of course. But the claim "you shouldn't inconvenience ordinary people, you'll only antagonise natural allies" is ahistorical without considering this point.

I was thinking about this as well. And this insulate Britain stuff is largely non-violent but still problematic enough to make the news every time and cause a significant amount of bother for those in charge. I'm not sure which other non-violent methods they could utilise to achieve the same level of non-violent disruption.

Ok yes but I mean Insulation not like it's a massive change It may get a lot of attention but I feel it's far more antagonistic than it needs to be and very much making enemies where it doesn't need to. The changes needed to stop climate change are sweeping and do warrant these kinds of disruptive protests, the changes needed to insulate people's homes -- not so much.

Would help their and extinction rebellions efforts if they were to glue themselves across the entrance to 10 Downing Street or the Houses of Parliament. I find it strange that after the government announced their abysmal attempt to aid heat pump installations, the experts on the radio claimed households need to ensure their houses where insulated before installing a heat pump?!

Back in July greenpeace literally dumped a ton of rubbish outside downing street. It barely made any news at all, let alone national news for weeks. Protesting outside downing street or parliament has proven to not work, which is why these protesters resorted to these tactics. And the fact that no one knows anything about the huge number of protests that have happened outside parliament and downing street just goes to show how ineffective they are. Oh also, our lovely home secretary literally wants protesting outside parliament to be illegal, and for protests that are "annoying" to be illegal. Don't you love the smell of civil liberties being stripped before our very eyes in the morning?

Eh, it’s fine. Nothing great but nothing particularly serious either - assuming they used cheap wood glue it’s PVA (biodegradable) and some organic solvents (also fine). Probably the worst offender environmentally is lorries and planes shipping it to customers.

Campaigning organisations need to get a significant number of the public on side if they want to get anywhere. Which is where Extinction Rebellion and Insulate Britain go wrong. Making life even more annoying for ordinary people will not help their cause. And it certainly won’t persuade the politicians that they need to be taken seriously.
@ahumanbeingfromtheearth1502
@ahumanbeingfromtheearth1502 2 жыл бұрын
Is that true though? The women's rights and civil rights movements, for example, did exactly this kind of thing and it very much worked. The idea that this doesn't help their cause only makes sense if you ignore history and all the times it has helped.
@stevej1154
@stevej1154 2 жыл бұрын
@@ahumanbeingfromtheearth1502 Rights for women and civil rights were battles that were won because each one had a significant and motivated support base and there was a sense that a historical injustice was being rectified. Environmentalism has broad support, but the specific Insulate Britain and Extinction Rebellion protests haven’t been able to garner such widespread support because their activities tend to aggravate the wrong people - the general public are the ones most inconvenienced by their transport-based actions. Also, I would argue that those former battles are still being fought in certain quarters. It’s a constant struggle. And what does victory in this current struggle look like? A stable climate? Too late for that. Climate chaos is already here. Blocking roads isn’t doing anything to help. If anything, it’s counterproductive.

@@stevej1154 oh I would never argue that the fight for women's rights and racial equality are over, not even close, just that those are examples of periods where they achieved very significant victories.

@@ahumanbeingfromtheearth1502 the government has made significant promises and passed many environmental laws already, to behave as if their not acting at all so much so you're justified in blocking the road a d possibly killing somebody is just wrong. The government is doing what it can with the resources we have, britian is an incredibly low polluter on the world stage so the issue certainly isn't as pressing as slavery or women's rights. It's big headed to compare the two
