From the Cinemassacre archives, here's an older video where James Rolfe and Mike Matei watch 16mm cartoons! I thought it would be appropriate with the announcement of the new Looney Tunes show coming to HBO soon.

That's the redeeming quality of this era.. shows that are actually good and not determined and funded by ratings and trends. I always wonder why Nickelodeon doesn't have that honest feature to it anymore.. until it hit me those people no longer walk those halls.. and the content creators were cool hippies grown up into their 30 trying to entertain us. People like James and others hold up that pure honest era.. but direct to us without some Network determining what's good for the stock market. I love it.. and then you can go watch those films they discuss within a few clicks
@skullvitch2
@skullvitch2 4 жыл бұрын
Small world hey? But yeah, I agree with you a hundred percent. Back when I was a kid, I used to love Saturday Morning cartoon blocks while they lasted. Unfortunately, they weren't very common on basic cable where I live, but by the we downgraded to that from satellite they were being either replaced with new line ups or removed altogether. Like when Fox Kids was replaced by the Fox Box, I didn't like it whatsoever. And when Warner Bros ended up stopping theirs altogether, I basically lost interest since those where I could see all my favorite cartoons. I've been meaning to track down the shows that I've enjoyed to relive those times again.

16 mm, when exposed properly and projected properly, looks great. It can reach at least 2k equivalent resolution (Not a 1 to 1 comparison) and it often has a higher dynamic range. Digital cameras are recently catching up to having a similar dynamic range and only in the higher end cameras. (Basically the film is able to capture a wider range of light values). Then there is the grain vs digital noise comparison. Sure grain looks more pleasant to a lot of people because it feels more ‘authentic’ but it also doesn’t stay in one place relative to the screen like digital noise does. These features are impossible to see through a youtube video, and it helps to have well shot/printed/stored film. I recommend that if anyone gets the chance to see real film projection to check it out.

@@queencancerous5332 That's going a bit far. I don't really care about James having lost his passion and putting out garbage now, but the old content has a very special place in many people's hearts, myself included. People might be a bit delusional, but you surely must understand where they're coming from at least. They're just reminiscent of the past, very much in spirit with the show itself.

Growing up we had this ancient theatre from the 40s that was awesome. It was just one massive screen and in my entire life I never saw the seating filled, only the center seats were ever available with the sides(2/3s of the theatre) taped off. That's how big it was. Another cool feature was the concession area was just behind the seating so you could get up and fuck about in line getting snacks while still watching the film, sort of like at the drive-in but with sound. One big open concept movie theatre that was impossible to get lost in. They would even periodically flash little reminders to hit the snack bar on the screen during the film. Tickets were cheap too! Anyways, they used to always play cartoons before and after every matinee so when you were a kid it was the thing to arrive an hour early with your friends so you could screw around watching Daffy and Goofy, running amok in the world's largest living room and getting spun on soda and candy before settling down for the main event. Afterwards, the parents took their time socializing before wrangling us monsters into the car. You made a whole day of it! Such a special experience 😊!

Glad they re-uploaded this video. I remember it being on Cinemassacre’s website. Don’t know if it’s still there or not as it’s been awhile since I’ve been over at the website, but I remember this video was on KZfaq, on this channel if I recall correctly many years ago, but it was later removed. Not sure why that was, but at least it’s back now.

Haha, nice, it feels like i've stumbled upon their house accidentally and they invited me in, and now they can't stop showing off their reel collection. I'll just smile politely and say: "wooow" every now and then.

These are even more timeless than you guys think, I’m 22 and I grew up watching these same cartoons on TV in the early 2000s.

Watched a lot of these in the 80s and 90s as a kid. Always enjoyable. The editing and especially the sound fx were top notch for the era they were made. A lot of those sounds still used today 70 years later.

Awesome vid!! And im not myself, into collecting cinema or reels but I completely understand what you guys were trying to get across n explain, why you guys rather have the authentic way to watch a film regardless of things not being as great to people who would much rather watch something on DVD but it's the nostalgia of it and there's just something about getting the rawer form of something and to appreciate it like they do!!
