I bought my Sea-Dweller 4000 116600 in Abu Dhabi where I was flying helicopters out to the offshore oil platforms back in 2015. In addition to owning a couple IWC Spitfires and a couple TAG's, I've been using my SD4K as my daily go to watch. That is up until just recently mid-2023 when I learned that it was discontinued in 2017. My much loved Sea-Dweller now lives in the Safe and will continue do so for the next few years.

You shouldn't, you should just wear it. It's a tool watch, and pretty much indestructible. Also, Sea Dwellers don't really appreciate that much. They're greatly underappreciated, and that's just not going to change. It's been like that for 50 years, and it'll be like that for the next 50 years as well. Unless it's got a Comex dial, it's just an everyday wear Rolex.

I’m not a big ceramic fan, but I’ll take it for my 116600. Absolute bomb of a watch for connoisseurs - the general watch public will assume it’s a Sub, the enthusiasts will know what it really is.

They haven't, and they won't. Sea Dwellers just aren't that sought after. There's only a small group of people who are looking for the ultimate version of the ultimate dive watch. Most people will just buy a Submariner. To me the 116600 is the perfect watch, but I'm one of a small minority.

@@bloodymarvelous4790they would be very sought after however it could take a long time unlike its hyped counterparts like the starbucks, gmt pepsi,etc. The vintage 1665 sea dwellers are highly collectible and the 116600 is produced for an extremely short period for rolex standards.

I am the same with wearing watches at work, I prefer to wear something a little under the radar so no ceramics and even my 16710 is on an all black bezel insert. That was the reason that I bought the Explorer 1 39mm and more recently the BB58 Blue, no one looks or cares about them. Great video Austin and James made a great choice 👏

I’ve a sweet spot for the Sea Dweller.....however the five digit 16600 Sea Dweller being a less costly was my own preferred choice. The transition 116600 would still be my choice over the Newer Submariners all things being equal if availability wasn’t an issue. Rareness of production could make the Sea Dweller very sought after this would make it a keeper. The anniversary Sea Dweller at 43 mm is great for someone with a larger wrist, all Sea Dwellers are really decent sports watches in my opinion. Personally I think the GMT ceramic bezels are a little bit slightly flashy, but offer better wearability from scratches and colour retention keeps them from ageing or oxidizing. The higher price at an after market dealer certainly wouldn’t be something I like to pay, however the rise in pricing has lifted even the vintage prices. So it’s all relevant to the choice one makes. I think you can have it both ways as it’s all the point of collecting different watches point in case with the ceramic bezel Sea Dweller.

New to the channel and impressed with the detailed review. However I have a few thoughts which I would like to share. I bought the 1st SD back in 1988. A few years later, an Omega SM Chrono, blue dial/bezel. The color of the SM bezel faded faster than the older Rolex. They were both suffering mild scratches, aluminum is prone to that. Few years later got a Blancpain 50 fathoms with a ceramic insert and the markers within, covered and not engraved. I still have that watch and it's in great shape. Never touched aluminum insert watches since. The Rolex pre-ceramic were more simple I agree but their bracelets/clasps were not as good as SMs, the downside was pins on the Omegas while Rolex used screws and very solid ones. The clasps now are by far better and apart from a couple of rare models, I wouldn't go for a pre-ceramic. I agree that some models are a bit "flashy" but given the Rolex sport line is about versatile watches, tool and dressy, couldn't offer a more moderate appearance. I would love to see a Sub/SD/SDDS with a Blancpain type bezel, regardless how many I bought, would go for that model. The new line in Subs/SD is by far better than the previous. Thinner lugs, a somewhat comeback to the pre-ceramic era that the watches were more elegant. Thank you for the well worded and presented review, looking forward to the next and enjoy watches in good health.

Investment wise this is “the” SD to buy/hold. Transitional, 40mm tapered lug case, Cerachrom, Glidelock, Parachrome, Chromalight maxi dial. All the modern features & only available 3 years. How could it do anything but go up? A couple years ago you could get a slightly worn Fullset for 10-11k. Now more like 14k & headed up. The Rolex collectors are adding them to their safes
@KFCganni
@KFCganni 3 жыл бұрын
Do you think picking it up for around 14k is too much or do you think it will just keep going up like the the discontinued Hulk 116610LV? Or would you think getting the Swiss only sea dweller would be a better choice?
@Jay-xr3sb
@Jay-xr3sb 3 жыл бұрын
Too thick. If its just an investment then put 14k in the nasdaq
@SPQR-Z
@SPQR-Z 3 жыл бұрын
Agreed. There are far better investments then watches but tell that to all the watch nut buying and stuffing them into their safes. Actually buying watches fall into the category of Diamonds and Gold of which you should have 10% allocations in your portfolio. As long as your in the hobby anyway it’s good to think about value and growth potential. Nobody likes to lose $ on an expensive watch. Not all Rolex are created equal in that respect. In ten years a Panda Daytona will increase in value a huge percentage more then a run of the mill Datejust. As far as this watch is concerned I see pretty good potential. You look for the trifecta when selecting a investment grade Rolex. Low production = Rarity, Transitional model = unique/quirky, and Fullset preferably unworn/stickered. The 116600 should do better then the Swiss only dial SD. Not sure about the Hulk Subs. Those are sure to continue up as well even though the SD 40mm is a lower production and rarer model. The Hulks are at crazy levels so not sure if there is as much room to grow. The New Hermit has potential and lets not forget the Kermit. I just sold a new 41mm Sub for a nice profit. I have a Fullset 116600 for sale at 14k but I thinking I just talked myself into keeping it

If you want the ultimate Sea Dweller, the 116600. If you don't want a ceramic bezel, and don't mind the hollow center links, the 16600. The 126600 and up, I'd only recommend if you've got large wrists. And the 126660 only if you want to reduce the amount of lead you need when SCUBA diving.

Sea Dwellers are a horrible investment. They are one of the least sought after Rolex models, and they have been for over 50 years. They are quintessential tool watches. If you bought a Sea Dweller, you were looking to buy a Sea Dweller and nothing else. They're made to be worn in the roughest of conditions, so wear them. If you have a Submariner, you were looking either for a dive watch or a Rolex. If you have a Sea Dweller, you were looking for the ultimate version of the ultimate dive watch. You're one of the few in-the-know.

Though I'm not keen on ceramic, and in your face bulk of the newer iterations, the only time and reason I'd want an "under the radar" watch is concern for possibly theft/mugging. But from coworkers? Its not Rolex' fault to project an image of "douchiness". It's most of the time, the people that wear them. I'd say to the owner, is-- prove them wrong with these shallow perceptions. At the end of the day, its you that you're pleasing not other people.

Great video and insights! I am in the same boat as James. While I completely agree how you and James feel about the watch, here is what I think. As far as I know, it’s not even theoretically possible to obtain a 116600 at retail price because it is no longer in production thus not available at any ADs. The grey market is the only way to get one. I would have gotten the watch serviced right away too because you never know. There are super clones that look better than the genuine ones out there. I saw people getting conned even with the original box and paper. As for the watch being too conspicuous, 99% of general population do not even notice if you are wearing a watch. If James is in some odd places, that’s more of a reason to wear SDs or non-date Subs. It’s the cyclops that screams “I am Rolex!”. He could have gotten a 16600 but wanted Ceramic in his life. At the end of the day, you are the only one admiring your watch. It’s the best of both worlds and highly collectible like you said. As of June 2021 it’s hovering around $17-20k. At this rate it may be close to $30k in three years.
@bloodymarvelous4790
@bloodymarvelous4790 7 ай бұрын
Well, it's back down to $14k, which makes it fairly affordable when compared to other models. The Sea Dweller just isn't a collectible watch, and that's a good thing. Those who buy a Sea Dweller, are looking for a Sea Dweller. Those who are looking for a dive watch, buy a Submariner. The Sea Dweller is the ultimate version of the ultimate dive watch, and probably the best tool watch in the world. It's built like a tank, without looking like a tank.

Wow, have been enjoying your vids until this one where you are calling me a twat. I have worked my ass off for my entire life and am 54 now. I am not worried when my AD calls and says my new GMT is in. I will wear it happily at retail price and if anyone has an issue it is theirs, not mine. I bought my first Rolex at 32, and it was a stereotypical Sub/Date and I earned every nickel for that watch as well. I also love my OP39 blue dial that I wear often. I also don't feel bad wearing my step dad's Onyx dial Day-Date. It was passed down to me and he was a self made man. Wow-twat? Come on man, seriously? PS- new money just means you earned it yourself.

With all due respect Austin, I love a 5 digit as much as the next guy but I think the fact that you call people who buy brand new ceramic Rolexes “twats” and “douches” kinda makes you sound like one to be honest. Who really cares what someone bought or how much he/she spent? What happened to just enjoying watches and to each their own? Sounds like a hater towards people who have a little more to spend. If you have a specific taste, that’s great but you shouldn’t judge other people because their choice of watch isn’t the same as yours. It’s a bad look.
