James Taylor

3 жыл бұрын

Looking back 50 years.
James reminisces on subjects surrounding his appearance on the BBC's November 16, 1970 tv show, "James Taylor In Concert."
Topics include: travels to London in the same year that he released album "Sweet Baby James", playing at the London Palladium, Lenny Bruce, driving cross-country with ‪@JoniMitchell‬, bunking with Warren Oates, Two-Lane Blacktop, visiting the Hopi Indian reservation--even dancing with snakes! James also solves the BBC "In Concert" mystery: "who knitted that green sweater"?! Test your JT trivia chops!
The set list for the 11/16/70 BBC concert is below and you can watch each of the newly restored song performances on James Taylor's KZfaq Channel (bit.ly/3jApW2o).

Live about 15 miles from 4 corner's national monument. Cortez CO. Can see Mesa Verde National Park Entrance out my back window! I taught at Kayenta, Az Navajo tribe. You were so lucky to see the ceremony at Hopi Mesa! How wonderful....not a cloud in the sky...and a hard rain fall! "It doesn't rain that much in Northern Arizona" but boy (when it does) It Pours! You had me at Fire & Rain at about 13 years...bought the sheet music.....still love to play it, on piano, today. Keep tellin' the stories and making real Music! Love you and Vince Gill and all those you play with! 4-ever in my heart!

So excited, I'll turn 60 in February .....not so excited now....I have seen Jackson Brown so many times in Telluride, Denver, etc. He waved to me as he was being driven away from the Telluride stage. I was crossing across the road/ditch to go to the campground bathroom. Too funny..I'm sure he remembers me...just kiddin"See ya'll in Salt Lake!

Hi, James! I am 58 years old and never had the chance to get an autograph from you or even have a long chat face to face. After all, friends should always be in touch, isn't it? LOL When I was 10, while visiting an aunt of mine in Copacabana (Rio de janeiro), I saw this Mud Slide Slim and The Blue Horizon record on the table. Inexplicably, I asked someone to play it and I was amazed despite being just 10. I used to imagine you all rehearsing in that big house on the back cover, the voice, the atmosphere. I was indeed fascinated. From that day on I have had 2 idols: you and Paul McCartney (Beatles). And to my great surprise you and Paul know each other. I also read somewhere that Paul helped you out in the first recording sessions. And here is another incredible coincidence: when I purchased the Walking Man album I noticed the credits for backing vocals - Paul and Linda McCartney. Can you imagine how happy I was? Some time after I saw you paid tribute to Paul while singing Let it Be with Mavis Staples. Just wonderful! Paul McCartney cried and so did I. It was clear to see that your voice touched his heart. Well, James, thanks for this opportunity. Come to Rio again sometime. It is a fantastic place. I saw you singing in the very first Rock in Rio. I will never forget that night and I bet you won't either. In your last show here in Rio (2017) your Portuguese was great! You talked about your broken finger. LOL keep safe and well, my friend! All the best, Ricardo C. Siqueira

I never quite understood what my father meant when he said he went to school with James Taylor and grew up with him. Being young and Naïve I took it in the literal sense back in the 80's. My fondest memories of my childhood were when I would wake up on weekend mornings to Jame's taylor LP's blasting loud on Saturday mornings. All my James Taylor concerts from the early 2000's in Montreal to 8 years ago in Calgary have all been amazing experiences. I always wondered if artists realize what an impact they can have on people's lives.. their music is literally the soundtrack to all our misfortunes and happiest moments... it is a profound responsibility. Your impact transcends generations. I look forward to seeing you and Bonnie at the Saddledome here in Calgary in September. Thank you James.

James, you are one of the best singer-songwriters ever. Thank you for all the music which has meant so much to me for fifty years. I still remember the first time I ever heard you. I was at university, and it was one Wednesday at 7.00pm, when everyone was crowded into our college TV room for ‘Top of The Pops’. You suddenly came on, singing Fire & Rain. Neither I nor many of the others had ever heard of you, let alone heard you, but the moment you started singing all the usual noise and banter amongst the students stopped and everyone fell silent, spellbound. We all instinctively knew this was something special. As for me, I went straight out the following morning and bought Mud Slide Slim - and have never looked back!...

I remember that concert. Also Ian Matthews was on the same TV programme with his version of Woodstock (which was a no 1 record in the UK) as JT; and he commented at the time on how intimidating it was to see Joni knitting in the corner while he sang her song for the cameras. Yes and Joni also did a concert recording for the BBC in the same series.

I watched the BBC rebroadcast of your 1970 concert the other night "live" and was thrilled to see your performance from back then. You began with the cover of a Beatles song... talked in the same humble way you speak today... played a song at the piano using the only two chords you said you had learned to play. It was all just so great! And now to hear you talk about filming "Two Lane Black Top"... wow! I saw that film after having seen "Easy Rider" and "Vanishing Point" and after driving cross-country in 1968 as a 13 year old passenger as my father and I drove to L.A. to visit my sister. I loved it! I've seen you in concert at The Beacon here in NYC years ago, as well as when you performed for the opening of the Muhammad Ali Center in Louisville. I see you're scheduled to play in Holmdel, NJ in July. I hope COVID permits me to go. Apologies for rambling on a bit, but finding you here tonight is perfect... as I just listened (several times) to your version of "Some Children See Him," which some people have created slide shows for to go with the story. It's my favorite Christmas song when sung by you. Thank you for all you've given us for all these years. I wish you and yours many more to come ... in a world that finally learns that we are all the same in our hearts when we are born. Merry Christmas!

Warren Oates did a lot of great work, including in “The Wild Bunch.” And I agree with him that “The Palladium” was arguably Lenny Bruce’s best bit. Like he said, look it up, because I’m probably the only person commenting here who knows what he’s talking about in that regard.

LOL sleeve 8" longer than his arm thats a riot. Said it before and ill say it again, Totally Admirable, The Honesty & Emotion that is expressed . Enjoyed listening to this. Its not some pre performed script to look good for critics. Interesting topic as well . Sounds like shamans underground. "Amazing is right ! Great video Great story shared .

James, great to listen to you again. I'm 74, in love again and keeping fit. Whatever you do "don't let the old man in" and remember "you don't stop playing because you get old, you get old because you stop playing". Please come back to England again soon and play live to all your British fans - England helped make you what you are.Carpe Diem.

JT loves his Olson guitars, but that gibson j-50 that he played in the BBC concert sounded phenomenal. Thanks James for posting all the BBC footage for us to enjoy.
