In today's video i go over the paint job i did using a cheap harbor freight electric spray gun as an experiment with cheap tractor paint.. I topped it all off with speedokote clear coat shot out of a the cheap HVLP spray gun from harbor freight! I am PLEASED with the results! The car still needs a good wet sand and buff but over all i'm 100% satisfied with the outcome!

James to let you know, we painted our 1994 nissan hardbody pickup, using the steps you provided us. We are glad we come across your channel, we have had great results. We used the electric spray gun from harbor freight, and yes we had a bit of orange peel, but nothing we weren't able to colors sand, and clear over. It looks great MF grey is a awesome color on this truck. Thank's for all the great videos, and all the things you have done to make it easier for the rest of us.

Great videos. I love the build on a budget cars. One piece of advice that i see mite help clean up the orange peel when you spray it. I notice when you are using the purple gun you are spraying at an angle. So the bottom half of the fan of paint is hitting directly and the top half is spraying over the panel. When i first started using a paint gun, i taped a paint brush to it and practiced keeping the brush flat on the panel. Teaches you how to keep the fan even and mite help with some of the orange peel. Just a helpful tip.

I can't believe how nice this car has come out for the price you paid for supplies(paint, reducer, hardner and primer. You are the only KZfaq creator showing your audience that you can repaint your car for a very reasonable cost, under $150.00. I know you have tons of sweat equity invested but you really deserve a huge amount of respect for the quality of work you put out in each video. 90% of Americans don't have $2,000 to pay a body shop to paint their vehicles. You show us it can be done with alternative methods. 😁
@JamesDguy
@JamesDguy 4 жыл бұрын
Kenneth Thanks for seeing what I have been trying to say for a long time. Realistically speaking if I were to pay that $2,000-$3,000 my luck would be I would leave the body shop and get hit and have to get it painted again. If I rip my bumper off it’s simple just get another cheap bumper and repaint it to match what I already did spending literally nothing out of that insurance check. The rest of that money could go into bills or more car parts.

@@JamesDguy Most people would never think that Rustoleum products turn out that great. In this particular case, it was Massey Ferguson grey but still the results are just stunning. I'm gonna try to paint my Geo Prizm with the Rustoleum high gloss advanced formula from your other videos. Just take baby steps and paint one panel at a time. Might 2K clear it if it's not too expensive. Thanks for the inspiration.

Kenneth For sure here to help! Rustoleum is a great product. I am using Majic tractor paint but still it falls in the same category of cheap good oil base paint. I recommend the 2k clear if you can but even without it the paint will look good 💪🏻

Nice job ! I used the speedokote clear on the Jetta pickup I did on my channel. It seems to be a good product. Just make sure you have the right reducr for the temperature range. I used medium and by the time I got the clear laid down it was over 95 in my garage. Needless to say it flashed too quickly and I ended up with a ton of peel and dry areas. Still, the product sanded and buffed out quite well. Keep going strong. Love the work you do !

Maybe next job try this... cover car with basecoat( whatever brand) using real spray gun then when you add first coat of clear add base with clear ( roughly 50/50%) then next coat of clear %20 base mixed with clear and last coat of clear %100 clear.. adds a very deep shine to paint.. and great filling properties.. been painting for over 20 yrs and have learned many tricks.. great seeing you do your thing :)

I used this video to paint my car. The harbor freight electric gun worked really well. I used Dry WD40 bicycle chain lube in the gun and let it sit over night. I used 2 1/4 quarts of paint to 1 1/2 of paint thinner. There is a drip cup that come with the gun. It uses a timed pour to to measure the consistency of the paint. I used a 17 second poor and used rustoleom paint. Good luck.

Your videos are awesome man... Don’t be afraid of bondo. It’s easy. For bigger dents, pull the dents out as far as you can by drilling a small hole and pull it out with a hook. Just make sure you don’t pull it past the original body line. Buy the 4 metal body filler blades from harbor freight. Use a fine file to file off the burs and round off the sharp corners. Then lay down 400 grit on a flat surface and wipe the blades across the sandpaper like you’re buttering bread.... keep going till the edge is smooth and rounded. Scuff the inside of the dent with 120 grit leaving the paint rough so the bondo has something to really grip into. Then, take the big blade and mix a small amount of bondo on it with a smaller blade that’s just wide enough to bridge the gap over the dent’s width. Use the blade to scrape off access filler. Scrape it off of that blade onto the other blade. Keeping the blade you’re using clean is key to not leaving access you’d otherwise need to sand off. It hardens quick so mix enough for 1 or 2 small dents. Apply less than you think you should. Laying on another small coat is a lot faster than sanding off excess between coats. Once you’re close... sand the filler down so it’s just below being flush with the area around it. Then use Bondo red glazing putty over the body filler. Make sure to buy the glazing putty that comes with the small tube of hardener. (The packages look the same... ask me how I know) The glazing putty dries even faster but is really easy to work with. It doesn’t leave the high ridges that makes the body filler so difficult to use. Sand the putty with 400 grit. Once it’s shaped to your liking, apply an extra thin layer with your finger rubbing it smooth over everything. Then lightly sand that with 600 grit and spray it with primer to seal it off. Once you get the hang of it you’ll get an average small dent smoothed out in under 10 minutes. I’m sure a pro would have more insight... this is my self taught process that I’ve been doing for years. 25 years later and the patched bondo work is still holding up on my Corvair. A car like your green civic would be dent free in half a day. (I didn’t see any dents that needed to be drilled and pulled)

Hi james, glad to hear you'll be trying pdr. You really can get results with a good pdr kit, make sure you get a decent one and not just one of the suction cup kits because those wont always pull a dent out properly or at all. Sometimes you need to get in behind the dent and push it out, then finish with a pdr dolly.

That is seriously nice. Those Honda's of that era are definitely keepers. If you know the history of this one, and it is good, then I would never sell it. Parts seem to be everywhere, cheap. You can find everything on the internet if something goes wrong, they are fun to drive and economical. I wish I would have never sold my 98 Civic, but here in Europe there is a lack of space to storage cars, and even then they tax you to death so only the very rich can afford this and they choose different cars if you know what I mean. After that fantastic cheap paint job I'm looking forward to the PDR stuff which has always amazed me in some youtube videos. Sorry for any grammatical errors but I'm not a native English speaker.

I've watched your older videos with the 2k clear cans, but this video gave me hope for my next project on my beater car, thank you for showing that a decent paintjob can be done with wallet friendly tools! came out great! Hopefully this speedokote can ship to california... (we can't have anything nice here, i had to buy california compliant plasti dip to spray a car -_-)

Can you use 2K clear over this paint? Is 2K clear compatible with it? Great job! I’m going to do my New Beetle with that paint and gun.
