Hello James, Thank you for reviewing the AeroPress Go. I am the inventor. We've always recommended brewing espresso strength, then adding water for an Americano or milk for a latte. In blind tasting tests, people ranging from professionals to coffee lovers always choose this (smoother) brewing method over pushing all the water through the grounds, which is more bitter. It's in the instructions in the box. Regarding the mug. You can think of it as a carrying case if you expect a suitable mug will always be available. But at 8,000 feet in the Sierra mountains, you might find it useful to press into. Sincerely yours, Alan

This was my initial response to James' remark that "the cup is too big" -- only for that brew method, which is not the classic Aeropress way! Anyway, I think the cup is a good idea, partly because it is a sturdy cup; one can't do Aeropress very well into a paper cup!

Hey Alan, I love my original AP, and have the Go on pre-order (hoping they ship soon!) too. I spend a lot of time outdoors and pretty much always have coffee on the ready, but I usually keep mine in my work bag (I’m a full-time fireman) because I live out of it at least a 1/3 of my life and while there’s almost always coffee in the firehouse, its quality is-shall we say-dubious. The biggest problem I seem to have is the vessel in which to heat water. At home, a kettle is a fixture in the kitchen, but when I’m out and about, not so much. More often than I’d like, I’m left boiling water in a standard cook pot or microwaving in a mug to get hot water. To that end, I’d really love if there were a metal cup (similar to any number of backpacking models) that could be offered for/with the Go to give one something to heat water on a stove. Alternatively, I’d be curious if you had any recommendations for suitable mugs in which the Go could nest.

i can add one more nice comment to the pile. i'm relatively new to coffee, and after fiddling around so much with a french press, and pour over setup, and getting such widely varying results, i finally buckled and ordered an aeropress after hearing about how easy it is to get consistent high quality results. it should be arriving in the mail tomorrow and i can't wait to start using it.

It's so strange seeing a video from James where I feel like he doesn't get it. I think this is the first time that's happened! As someone who goes camping, hunting, hiking, fishing, etc, the Aeropress Go is worth its weight in gold. The ability to pack your entire coffee setup into a small package like this that takes up little space in my backpack is a big deal. And I don't even need to bring a collapsible cup anymore! I think when James thinks of "travel" he thinks "travel to hotels", which is indeed a fair perspective. He however doesn't seem to understand the needs of people like me, who may only be able to fit 3 days of life into no more than a 65L backpack. The Aeropress Go ends up being the difference between fresh coffee or instant coffee at the summit!
@Webfra14

Come on, 65L is tons of space for coffee stuff. Probably can bring a DE1+! And 10 bags of the same coffee at slightly different roasting levels... ...what you mean we will not be back home for lunch today??

agreed. i love the aeropress go over the original because it packs so small, consise and rattle free. it's diminutive in comparison and fits any bag. It's curious too because James stays away from any kind of backpacking coffee solution but this one. I'd be suprised if he'd ever touch the GSI Coffee Rocket for example. Which i like. It's weird but works well especially when steeped first, funnel added later. Bot this Aeropress Go is perfection. I bring it to hotels, campings, across borders. The original just has too many loose components. I found that with regular ground coffee the scoop and level 3 matches up to James's ultimate recipee too.

Yep - I don't own any Aeropress yet, but this has me interested. Significant appeal in having the screw top cup-container to keep any residual drips off my other kit, without the waste of using a Ziploc. I'd be interested in a larger version still - maybe make the container two cups that screw into each other with a full size press in the middle? Because jealous camping companions are almost as annoying as not having coffee 😉

Being a mountaineer, i can really see the value in this new format. Volume and weight of the gear in your backpack is crucial. Little savings in each part of your stuff really helps. Having a cup that fits perfect it's a GREAT advantage, it can be the only cup that you bring to the expedition. Im not crazy with the idea of fitting a grinder, it's not necessary if your goal is to keep weight to the minimum. A better idea is to fit ground coffee there. Thanks for your videos, you made my coffee experience way better!

@@benmckinlay1902 Today I went to a speciality coffee place with a friend and ordered an Aeropress coffee and we were sitting close enough to the barista so I saw them make my coffee. I was pointing out every mistake to her. They literally made a v60 style coffee in an Aeropress. They did not put the plug/stopper in after the 30 second mark to keep the coffee and water steeping for 2 minutes, so it was dripping out slowly like on a v60 and then at the end the barista really leaned on the press and pushed it quickly all the way though, past the hiss. 😐My friend was laughing so hard at me. I realized afterwards that I've become one of those people... well one of you people aka. coffee lover ( ❤️) that knows maybe too much about coffee to enjoy just an OK cup of coffee.🤣

But that's kind of the thing - I'm a backpacker and I DON'T want this cup. I have a proper quality cup to fit a lot more usage than just coffee. A cup I can heat up over a fire, or use as a ladle. I definetly don't want another cup to carry around. Same goes for the stirrer and the spoon - I have a proper traveling spoon (and learned how much coffee it holds at once) that covers that usage and I can also use with other food. I don't want another one to carry around. Only scenario I see for this is if you're going out just to drink coffee somewhere outside (and probably take Instagram pics :P ) and you don't need to thing about other usabilities.

@@TheGrimChopper depends on the kind of trip I'm doing. If I'm out a while, covering ground & packing light I've only got my pot/mug & some instant packets. Typically I just shake up some cold in a water bottle & don't bother with heating at all. Short trips with stays at more established camps I'm looking for lightweight packable luxury items & thats definitely this especially since the aeropress is my go to home brewing method.

@Emad Saghir I think you might have read that wrong. She couldn't get a coffee at most of the airports she was flying from with the coffee shops being closed. The alternative would have been to make coffee with an AeroPress in the hotel room she was staying at, but that wasn't an option since a lot of the hotels don't provide cups anymore. So the AP Go would have been perfect for the hotel room scenario as it provides an all-in-one solution with the cup.

@Electrohama
@Electrohama 4 жыл бұрын
This probably will be overlooked, but here i go anyways: As you can tell the old filter holder has round markings on the outer ring and 4 in the middle between the holes and the new one has one big marking in the middle ( 3:30 ) . These are pressure spots from removing the plastic out of the casting tool. The casting tool is two blocks pressed together to form the casting mould in the middle. The plastic is heated and injected into the mould. After the finished component has been cooled, it is automatically ejected. This is done by pins which push the component out of the mould after the casting tools are seperated. The honeycomb structure is relatively fragile due to its thin joints and can break more easily when ejected. The new paper holder's holes are radially arranged, resulting in thicker honeycomb walls and therefore giving more stability. The area in the middle was intentionally not perforated to make removal easier and reduce the number of defects in the final product. In addition, the injection mould is simplified. Both points result in lower production costs. Hope i could clarify the design choice. Edit: I'm flattered that people think i am a AeroPress employee. I want to clarify that i just happen to be an engineering student, with some experience in the feild of materials science and production engineering. This was just an educated guess based on my (probably still little) experience and i should have clarified that at the beginning.

Totally agree! Backpacking/hiking is the only case an ap go would be better than the original. Being able to fit everything together and keeping it in a container, that also functions as a cup is pretty handy. I usually don't carry a cup when hiking to save space. I just take a rather tall bottle for water, so having the cup would be perfect for me. For many people who've had a good handgrinder before they bought their ap the grinder might also not fit inside the brewing chamber. In that case the ap go would be a good way to save space as well. To be honest though, if I wasn't hiking and travelling with very restricted backpack space I'd probably not get one as well.

I watched this AFTER I ordered my AP Go, and it made me a little sad because I thought I'd made the wrong decision. However, since then I've brought it out to brew on a hike and on vacation at a hotel. In both cases, it's perfect. On the hike, it's prefect because of all the reasons he's mentioned. But surprisingly, it was wonderful at the hotel too! For one simple reason : Not all hotels have cups that fit the head/cap of the AP to allow you to plunge into. Also, most hotels come with a clunky kettle, and sometimes that kettle can be a bit unwieldy when full. The slightly rounded-square-ish shape of the AP Go cup is actually great for pouring. The little red silicon lid is also perfect for weighing your beans and then pouring into a grinder because the flexible silicone can be bent into a sort of spout. No mess!

Interestingly the cup itself has ended up being one of the most critical elements of the package for me. I travel a lot for work and routinely find myself in hotels in which a tiny tea cup is all you’ll get. The Go mug has routinely come to my rescue and indeed also makes a fine tumbler for a dram or two. COVID has actually underscored the value of this as I now have to deal with lengthy quarantine stays. I guess you could fit a 3rd party cup into the standard AeroPress bag, but this is a great compact solution. The stirrer is the bit I find extraneous, but then again I’m not a camper (though if I was I guess I’d have a spoon). Seems like I’m hammering an odd point but you do explicitly state that you cannot see many scenarios where the cup is that important and this is really counter to my experience.

No James I don't think you're missing anything obvious at all. I think you really did hit all the use cases, and it just so happens I'm in the "Don't have a good cup/struggle to keep all the bits together" camp. It's not that the Areopress is difficult to transport, it's that I don't want to constantly have to pack it up from my kitchen, toss it in my bag, take it to work, try not to smush a paper hot liquids cup while using it, and then reverse the process when I get home. Could this just inherently be laziness, or could I solve literally all the problems stated with my own office mug and a second Areopress? Sure. But if I'd be getting a second Areopress anyway for the naturally confined "Personal Space at the Office" situation, why not have a smaller one with a cup? TL:DR Yes, it's a bit silly, but as someone in one of those silly edge cases I'm picking one up because of this review. Thank you.

Hi James, love your videos. ps. The design change of the paper holder is to help the manufacturing process. You can see the little dimple in the middle, that is where the plastic flows in during the plastic injection process. By filling it, it helps the material to flow in and fill the mold quicker. Quicker = more units per hour = cheaper. It would help sturdiness of the part by reducing weld lines (think of where 2 flows of hot liquid plastic join) Basic plastic injection design principles

@uncrownedking5106
@uncrownedking5106 4 жыл бұрын
the solution is to extract more concentrated coffee and then dilute it to the amount you like, it can make an extra cup with the same quality as the regular method if that's what you looking for. Regarding the way to extract more concentrated coffee, some guy on YT made a video about how to make an espresso like coffee by pushing the coffee down with a tool to make it more trapped then add another filter on top of it so that the water falling doesn't disturp the coffee, and the press it. Hope that solves your problem until they make a "STAY" version to their line.

@@uncrownedking5106 I've tried it several times to just use more coffee, push like ~200-250g water and dilute to the full extent of a nice 500ml cup and the coffee just tastes to weak. What I do is (briefly): put in more coffee of course (e.g. ~35-40g for 500ml water), put coffee in Aeropress, fill to absolute max with water and stir 4 times, let it drip, after ~30sec fill up water to max again, stir 10-15 times, let it drip...repeat until all the water is in and you can safely push. Depending on the coffee this takes 5-10min but the result for me is so much better and doesn't taste so watered down. I really don't get it why people are claiming it would work with just using more coffee and diluting it afterwards. If you want a quicker result, use metal filter instead of paper filter. Tastes the same to me (we have good water in Germany in most parts of Germany and all the take about using special filtered water and so on is just esoteric to me (sorry James, I just don't taste the difference her and our water might just be so much better than in the UK or US)

The problem I have with this one is I can't fit a grinder inside. So when I'm taking a normal Aeropress, the cup I carry takes up space. If I'm bringing this, the grinder takes up that space.
@natfailsyoutube8163
@natfailsyoutube8163 4 жыл бұрын
@@drownthedays I think the assumption that this is about space might be slightly off. I imagine this "cup" keeps a slightly wet aeropress from making other things carried with it wet. Putting a grinder with a slightly wet portable coffee brewer in my experience leads to damn beans and a messy bag. Putting a grinder inside an aeropress might save space, but if you can't impeccably clean and dry the brewer before packing it away that's a recipe for a bad time. Sealing the brewer seems to solve that I imagine, even if it's not optimal for space saving

As a field worker, working across numerous locations on any given day, this is perfect. The cup is great, you can use it for other drinks during the day, not just for a coffee, so it replaces the cup I normally carry plus I have the advantage of having the AeroPress clean and contained in one place. The lid is also nice as a place to rest the cup and is a wee bit grippier so that's also a great addition. Also a place to have you're hob nobs if you're working in a mucky environment!! Review is odd as it's clearly not a replacement for the AeroPress, you can still buy the original, it's an alternative for backpacking, field work, travel and camping - so a perfect addition to the range, and I would have thought good to review it exclusively in that context. Certainly 5 stars from me and the set up I've been waiting for that ideally suits my needs!

I usually fumble about with it after I’ve pulled one out to show a customer. And in reality all those pieces get scattered about your kitchen drawer or bag or whatever. The fact that it all fits together nicely. That’s what the cup is for. The stirrer fits inside.( I have no idea where my original one is). The likelihood of all the pieces being where I need them when I need them. Like when I’ve performed the pour and then go oh no a stirrer. I’d hate to admit some of the things I’ve used for a stirrer. I also do end up at hotels with nothing but junky paper cups that sometimes don’t survive an Aeropress press. I can see another advantage to this. Tidiness during a multiday back packing trip. By fitting everything into a cup with what looks to be a tight fitting silicon cap, you keep all the stuff that might be messy inside, and away from your other gear in your pack. Otherwise you need to use a lot of water/paper towels cleaning off the press and the stirrer, and you need to keep the unused filters away from that mess. But with this you can just give it all a quick shake to clean it "enough," pack it up and get back to your hike, leaving the full cleanup to do when your trip is over. As for it only filling the cup halfway, I find an Aeropress makes coffee that is too strong for my tastes. So I often do a half and half, adding an equal amount of hot water to what I've brewed. So, about half a mug is just about right for me. However, it being smaller is a misstep to me. I usually split my brew with my wife, and we both get our (weak, from your point of view) coffees from a single press. The capacity of this makes me think that would no longer be possible. If they'd made it just an inch taller they'd have kept it at the capacity of the old model. Ah well.

I own a small Motorhome with little storage so the Go is my choice to keep it in my rig. The target market are also RVers, boat owners, tiny apartments’ dwellers, college students, campers, travelers... I am in marketing so from my perspective the Aeropress’ marketing team nailed it. Grind your own coffee and put in a zip loc bag along with hot water in a thermos and you are good to go. Long haul crewmember perspective. Airplane "potable water" is questionable to say the least, and some of the coffee brands pretty bad too, so I have been looking for ways to brew with bottled water, and my own coffee. The tricky thing is that space in my bags is very limited, and the new aeropress being more compact, is a lot easier to pack than the regular one with the hexagon edge sticking out. Coffee for me serves 2 purposes. Pleasure, and keeping me awake. At home I have all the toys that allow me to brew delicious coffee in a number of ways. On the road though, I can settle for anything that is better than stale bad coffee brewed with questionable water in ancient coffeemakers.

Everyone is being so negative about this new Aeropress Go. I think the product is misunderstood. It’s not supposed to be a new, better, amazing new aeropress. It’s an aeropress for travel or to throw in a backpack. They made it smaller by chopping off the 4 cup measure. I’ve had an aeropress for about 10 years and have never made more than 2 or 3 cups with it. Now the aeropress was made to make a coffee concentrate and then drink it as a strong espresso-like coffee or add hot water to make americano. I would guess 90% of users make americano type drinks with this machine. Yes. The cup is large. And when you make coffee in it - even when you dilute it as an americano, the cup is only half full, but most likely if you do use this cup to drink from you would be on “the go”, with no lid, a half-full cup is less likely to spill all over your pants or in your car. Brilliant! The 4 rounded corners on the cup make it easy to pour coffee concentrate into three cups if you are making coffee for two or three people, and it also makes it easier to sip from. The ridges on the cup keep the hot cup from burning your fingers, and the best part... the cup makes it easy to pack the aeropress, scoop, stirrer, and filters into it for easy transport. Before, if I travelled with my old aeropress I had to throw everything into a freezer ziploc bag and even then it wasn’t a compact package and and the scoop and stirring paddle would usually pierce the plastic bag, and the filters would fall out of the plunger and get crimped and wrinkled. So they made a smaller aeropress that fits with all the accessories into its own carrying “case” which doubles as a drinking cup, or brewing carafe. What else would you want?? I think it’s brilliant.

Thanks for the vid, James. I have been using the regular Aeropress for some years now and to me, the Go came perfect. More portable, with the amount I am used to drink. Thanks Adam!

I've been bringing the Go on my travels for about a year now. Love it! Small and compact, everything I need together. I drink pourover with a V60 and espresso with a Flair typically, so this is my backup.

Personally, when I do go hiking/camping/fishing (often all at the same time) I tend to do a bit of weight and space optimization. I am bringing fly-rods, gear and the waders on top of the hammock, hiking boots, food and... cooking solutions. That means that I already have exactly one cup, and it happens to be one that can be used for cooking as well. It's metal, so I can clean water in it. My "luxury" item on these trips has always been the OG Aeropress and a small grinder. Nerdy, prehaps, but it's always been a morale-booster when the weather's not great. I could see myself using the tiny filter-pack, the smaller Go version and the new smaller scoop, but leave the stirrer (already got a long spoon), the lid and the cup. That said, when going for really minimal space-usage and light weight, I'm bringing the GSI UL Java Drop (gsioutdoors.com/ultralight-java-drip.html), without the cup. It fits under the gas canister, and does not need paper filters that can get wet. Grinder is useful for other stuff than coffee, so that stays in the pack. The filter is also useful as a general-purpose filter for melting snow, tapping sap, filtering bugs when collecting rain water et.c.

Brother, fly fishing and good coffee is not nerdy, it is a sign that you understand life very well.

I have this Aeropress go version and I love it. I bought it to go camping/overlanding with, but I use it exclusively at home because I love the coffee it produces! As a side note about the “cup”…the issue with assuming there will always be a cup available to brew into, is that the “available cup” may not physically accommodate the Aeropress. So including the cup/carrying case is useful. (I do bring my own favorite cup to brew into while exploring the backcountry) Love your channel, James! My son introduced me to your channel and I truly like you style and professional quality of your productions!

I once stayed at a hotel that only had paper cups and I was glad I had my titanium travel cup to use with the Aeropress. The Go would make certain a sturdy cup of the right diameter and capacity is with you though I love how my Aergrind fits into the original. Does the narrower lip of the brewer make you worry it will slip off when you press if you're using a different cup?

Thanks for reviewing this James. Maybe we're looking at this too much from our own specialty coffee bubble? On reddit, facebook and forums about the aeropress, most people seem to use an aeropress as an easy way to brew coffee (the way it was intended by Alan Adler). Most of these people do not even own a grinder or scales, and use the scoop and the number marks on the aeropress. For them, it is an easy way to prepare a cup of coffee at home or at the office (and we all know it's really hard to make a bad cup of coffee with it), as well as an easy to clean device. So I see this smaller version more as a compact set you can throw in your bag or backpack on the way to the office, where you have ground coffee and hot water available, but still have some sense of control over brewing your own cup of joe.

I get that, but the Aeropress already has the mantle of being the best brewer for this scenario so it still seems odd to me to go further down that road

I watch these videos and I like nice coffee but honestly this is 100% what I use it for. I am OK leaving super nice coffee to the cafes, at home I want something cheap, consistent, easy to clean and with a minimal counter top footprint.Before this I used a plunger / cafetière but didn't like the taste, and a moka pot but didn't like the effort. I have a grinder which I use on nice beans, but my regular day to day coffee is pre-ground.

Hey James , great review. To answer your question ,,,, Yes I want one. I travel for work usually 7 days on with 7 days off . I have always travelled and loved the "older Aero press " but it always took up so much space in my bag. Now I get the same areo press product in a more compact size. I can now go out on a 7 day work trip with a little more space in my kit . Thanks for the great review, I will be ordering one soon!

If I am wild camping this is perfect for a pick me up when I get up in the morning. Fits in my existing cooking set up and very compact. Even the mug is handy

I'd already ordered the Go when I watched this and was rather crestfallen. I almost cancelled and switched to the regular Aeropress. Now I have the Go, I absolutely love it! It's plenty big enough, as you can make 3 servings at one time, and makes great, smooth coffee. My partner is a real gadget sceptic but was totally sold on it after tasting the first cup. She actually loved the mug, which I thought hilarious... Something about it being warm in her hands! I love the clever, compact design which is great for travelling. Definitely not to be dismissed.

Yeah like it's been mentioned a few times, I think this is a big thing for backpackers. I know a lot of people who like to make coffee out in the woods, and they would definitely go for this.

When I was working as an agency chef and in a different kitchen most days, the cup did come in handy. Being able to take the whole thing in a nice small cup was pretty decent.

as a traveling musician I have to appreciate this Go version, because usually there are no cups in the dressing rooms. All in one. Its's a great traveling buddy of mine 🙂

I agree, the cup is what actually intruiges me. A few years ago, I bought a plastic camping cup for that sole purpose. I have the regular aeropress.

As someone who's not really a coffee drinker myself, but likes to keep some nice quality things around for guests and for including some fresh coffee in the occasional baked item rather than just using instant coffee this is perfect. Being able to keep all the needed components together in one small package that can sit in my cupboard and stay together rather than losing pieces as they migrate throughout the kitchen over time is brilliant. I know you could technically use the box it came in, but that box also takes up space and cardboard will always eventually give out.

I love the capacity of the cup! It’s excellent for a “dense” frothy mild latte. I have the original and the go. Coffee wise, same. Preference...the go. I just like the size.
