James Kalm slips into Canada Gallery for a stroll through “Hocket”, the most recent show by Matt Connors. Employing flat planes of thin luminous color, Connors composes simple punchy compositions that reference “Color Field”, “Support Surface” and other branches of color based abstraction. Soaking his acrylic paints into raw canvas, the artist layers scrims of pigment that fluctuate between controlled geometric formalism and slipperier gestural areas that resonate with subtle contrasts and tinted harmonies. A nonchalant casualness deflects from these work’s well conceived and structured compositions. This program was recorded October 23, 2017

These are the best art videos available despite the wobbly camera work...a real art lover's view.

So much respect for your robust library !! I'm almost thinking how the great Stanley Whitney took over that space.

Thank you James. 15:08 minutes well spent watching. Love the artist's color selection and how the composition just follows it. Or maybe it is the other way around. But that is the sequence I saw.

Interesting work. Hanging height of the pieces seemed strange. Liked the use of colour on the side of works. Thanks James and Kate. Chris

Hi James, just looked at the sideshow gallery website and notice that echoes of Fred Gutzeit work in Matt's pieces, particularly with the colour frames and borders. Review a couple of your films with Fred, the Lee show and Fred's opening at Sideshow. Like his work, I agree that his true paintings are strong and he has a very nice sense of colour composition. Thanks James and Kate. Chris

I notice that there is a kind of "strange formalist painthing" school going on. I can think of a german young artist, Thomas Seibitz. I like, it has freedom and they are not afraid to thake chances. Thank you Kate! Here from Rio again

The more complex pieces (of the "Hocket" ilk) are strong pushers of geometric and emotional esthetics. Good to see some new work the respects the fact that fine art is visual.

This one is a yes for me... a young(er) artist I assume, new to me. I agree with the supports surface reference... freedom with material and structural honesty is clear. How about a comparison with someone like Ed Moses as well? It came to my mind. A good pairing with that young guitarist at the opening as well.

Matt may use rollers, or just lays the paintings horizontal and works the paint like water color (?)
