Just a quick comment about the dates to maturity on seed packets. These estimates are based on spring planting and growing through the height of spring and summer. When planting succession crops for fall harvest, you have to add a couple of weeks to account for the shorter days of fall growing. Johnny's Seeds has an interactive succession planting spreadsheet that will calculate your fall sewn crops that takes this into consideration. It's free and very easy to use.

I followed you when I lived in Florida but never planted anything. Now I live in Indiana so it's more usable because my zone is not the same but closer to yours. But I still haven't planted. Left over nonsense from the army gets me in moods. Hopefully I'll get stuff together for next year

Fellow Hoosier here & previous Floridian. This is my 1st yr trying to grow. Every yr I think I've missed the opportunity because everyone is pulling up their gardens by this time, but I've been in couraged to see what I can still grow before winter. I want to encourage u to plant a couple things this wk. I've been dealing w some mental hardships. I've found caring for my plants really to be helpful for my mental health. I wasn't sure if my plants would survive &/or produce anything, but they (well some of them) are starting to look better, so we'll see. Best of luck to you. *Mental Health isn't Spoken About Enough* ... ♥️

If I say this I realize it might not be helpful. But I will say 1st there's still time to plant fall gardens and even late summer ones and 2nd if you do manage to get a little bit of those started you might find it very relaxing; and help you kind of meditate through whatever your troubles are.💖

Hi Michael, I am an Airforce vet . Try to let the army moods change into a gardening mood. It is so relaxing and rewarding. I have been doing it for several years here in Canada. The garden doesn't always produce, but gets better every year. This guy James has so many great tips and there are many more as well. Remember...a poor harvest turns into great compost for next year!

I do hope you feel better. Gardening is very meditative. My advice is start small. Very small. Buy a few starter plants at a big box store next spring. If you want to be really encouraged plant radishes! They're superfast and cold hardy for the first crop in spring.

If you have a fence like i do, you can get some netting from the dollar store and tack/nail it to the fence, the full height of the fence and plant peas along the bottom of the fence - the peas will grab onto and climb right up the netting (sometimes you need to help them when their little tendrils first come out but after that they go on their own). grab a package of innoculant if you can still find it, soak the peas overnight, dust with the innoculant and make 1" deep holes an inch or 2 apart and drop those bad boys in the holes. Super easy and still time to get some peas at least!

@@jamesprigioni what a good life for Tuck too. Living his life in such biodiversity can only give him the healthiest and longest life possible. Those littles live longer to begin with. We had a toy fox terrier that lived to see 21 years old. She was an old girl and died peacefully in her sleep of old age, cuddled up with her human. We now have a toy Chihuahua, named Toby and a Hungarian Vizsla named Ranger. He's a rescue shelter dog from Mississippi. We were his FOURTH home when he got to us, at 6 to 8 months old. He was mistreated and to help him cope with that has been one of the greater challenges with him, if you know the breed you will know exactly what I'm talking about. Hungarian Vizslas are the ultimate velcro dogs whom are happy to be with their human 24/7. Literally. They are love bugs that LOVE to cuddle and they are clingy and needy. They go on point and are classified as a hunting/sporting breed, but they wouldn't actually hurt a fly and make terrible guard dogs. They are a very, very, very, very, very, very high strung energetic active distractable anxiety fueled breed that won't attack a thing. They won't defend you and are more inclined to run from scary situations and loud noises in spite of being considered a large breed. They are the one hunting breed that doubles well as a house dog too. They are the most neurotic breed I've ever known and they are notorious chewers. He's ripped apart every single toy I've ever bought him and I mean annihilation. He's a good boy, but it takes a special patient soul to have a Hungarian Vizsla. They are not a good breed for beginning dog owners and they are certainly NOT meant for everyone. I didn't realize what I was in for when I first got him and I remember being completely exhausted by the end of the day, unsure if I could handle this wild, loud, and hairy beast. I didn't even know his breed then.

Thanks. Now that my tomatoes are gone, I want to keep the garden growing. (I don’t know if you’ve mentioned them, but the best tasting tomato ever is Cherokee Purple!). I’m really looking forward to growing Chinese vegetables because I love making Chinese food. I love seeing Tuck. He’s such a cutie, and it’s amazing watching him dig up his own carrots and eat them. What a great little buddy.

I also love Cherokee Purple tomatoes. I’m in Zone 7 and the heat and humidity this growing season 2022 made them start cracking while still green on the tops this year. I grew them last year and always save the seeds. My tomatoes were hit with everything this year from a White Fly attack, scorching sun and now blight.

@@fancythat5136 I’m somewhere between Zones 9-10 (Southern CA), and we had a bit of trouble with the tomatoes cracking, too, but not while they were still green. Sorry you had that problem. One thing I heard in another video to prevent tomatoes from cracking or splitting is to cut down a fair amount on watering them in the last month or so. It seemed to help a lot, but since yours were still green, I don’t know what you could do for that. Apparently, tougher-skinned tomatoes, like Roma and other tomatoes good for canning, don’t crack as easily. Yes, I’ve been saving seeds like a mad person this year, too, especially the Cherokee Purples. We grew ours in a high raised bed and built a structure around it from PVC (narrow enough to bend) and covered it with 1/2” netting to keep a lot of stuff out (esp. squirrels, rabbits, rats & birds), but we did get some worms. It was so frustrating to see a beautiful, fully red tomato to only turn it around and see that the whole back half was eaten off. Next year, I’m going to plant a bunch of marigolds and garlic in between the tomatoes to, hopefully, keep some of the insects & such off them off them. Good luck next year!

@@sandrabulluck1896 Animals are so funny in the things they will eat. I used to have a cat that would happily eat a tiny bit of sauerkraut! I wouldn’t allow him much because I’m sure it’s not that great for an animal, but it was hysterical to watch.

Swiss chard is the unsung hero of greens for anyone living in the heat, I really like multisowing it like Charles Dowding does, it does so much better for me, they seem to merge into a big semishrub that produces like crazy and takes up roughly the same space. And I direct sow that way too, its so hardy.

If you use floating row covers or plastic hoops you can protect against early frosts and grow even longer! First few frosts usually only nip the ends of of the leafy greens. Usually you need 3 or 4 hours of constant temps below or around 28° F to be killing.

Not ideal but so far it's working, plants are still uprght and my first tomatoes are finally appearing. Might need to McGyver some more once they start getting weighty, we'll see but at least for now they are safe from the slugs!

James, you have got to try Brussle Sprout greens they are great and it doesnt effect production as long as you leave a 3-4 large leaves at the top. Also Cabbage is great when you cut the oldest leaves while they grow (assuming you don't mind not getting a head at the end).

Love that channel bro. I planted 60 lettuces this weekend. 6 different kinds 10 of each. Also 60 short sweet carrots and 60 parsinian carrots. Hoping for the best. Keep sending that knowledge our way

Do a 'V' neck next time around on the shirts! Also, put on it "James & Tuck, we out" or "Let's Go!" Or even "Let's Grow!" I'd buy one or two or more of those!

I ate a huge bowl of multi colored beets for dinner last night. so yummy. Today I'll saute the greens with homegrown garlic, avacado oil and home grown onions and serve it over rice and beens. YUMMY! Blessings, julie
