I have used fiber pots. They lasted 5 years so far. Really inexpensive and can get all kinds of sizes and configurations. I bought some 200 gal. Took a truck to a place that sells different types of soil by the tractor scoop. Way way cheaper than bags. Love your show man.

@8:05 into the video you point out the rusted "screws" in the metal bed. Those aren't screws, they are nuts and for under $5.00 you can buy a box of stainless steel nuts that will never rust. Replace the ones you have with stainless, or, just leave the rust which is a naturally occurring mineral

We gathered free heat treated pallets and nailed them together, as is, to make square raised beds. Lined the beds to contain the materials and filled with tree branches and chunk’s. Then soil, compost, peat moss and such. I’m able to stand by the raised beds to plant and harvest. Being in my 70’s, stooping or kneeling is no longer an option so the 4 pallet beds we have work great. We’re able to eat the produce directly from the garden!

@@nat76hill she sent me a photo of it. It is wonderful and I am not sure how to share it with others though as I live in WA state and thus cannot upload to my KZfaq the video. However, I believe if you look up the Home Depot blocks and then use imagination for 2 cedar planks on top of each other, you may have an idea how nice it looks! Her brother in law had made one like this, who lives near her mom, and he has had very good luck in Arizona with this method for over a year. Now she and I are looking at how to water well and not on the leaves, perhaps with a timer and irrigation tubing. I am very proud of her as she is a city girl in the country and growing a tomato plant for her mom even though she herself hates tomatoes. :)

I have 9 high metal raised beds (30-32 inches tall - from Birdies and Vego) and 10 regular galvanized metal raised beds (11-12 inches tall - no name from Amazon) in my 8500 square foot food forest. I bought all light and dark green, so they blend in better. Love that custom netting you are using in the metal raised beds. I saw that but didn't buy it. I use tulle (think bridal veil material if you are not familiar with tulle). It's so much cheaper than those custom covers and keeps the tiny pests out while letting sunshine and water in. I have also used plain wood and cedar raised beds in the past and still have 10 of them in use. I prefer the metal ones, especially the taller ones. I am 68 and they are great for senior citizens; you don't have to bend or crawl on the ground. to tend them. As always, thanks for the video, James. Happy growing!

They felt flimsy at first but once you get soil in them and it packs in from watering they’re very strong and look great. The screws rusting was the only thing I could potentially see going wrong down the road. Were happy with them so far!

Allura Fiber Board is the best thing I have found. Comes in 1/2 x 3 x 5 for about $15. All you need is a circular saw with a fiber board blade, drill, screws, and 2 x 4 at the corners and middle for tying it together. The stuff is tough and will last forever. Longer than any metal bed. And a lot cheaper.

In my experience, you can double the lifespan of a plain lumber raised bed by treating it with linseed oil before filling it. After 4-5 years, empty the bed, brush it free of soil, and oil the wood again. I have a bed that is 11 years old and going strong, but it's on its last legs. Two or three more winters will make it necessary to build a new one.

My journey with raised beds led me to making them out of concrete. We used basalt fibers (they don't chemically react with the alkalinity of the concrete & are 3x lighter & 2.5 stronger (tensile) than steel fibers) mixed in with the concrete (+ dye for color) & used some hardware cloth to reinforce the corners, otherwise no rebar. We built them right on top of French drains we dug to deal with drainage (we covered the trench from bottom to top with landscape fabric to greatly slow infiltration of dirt over time, as well as keeping the concrete mix out) as well as a cushion to buffer against the seasonal, clay shifting in the ground. We made them 4" wide at the top & 6" wide at the base & 2' tall. It took us all summer to build them with just the 2 of us. (We wanted them to lie fallow that year as they needed to rest after 7 years of rotational use.) We set up forms with plywood & aluminum roofing sheets, filled & gently vibrated them to ensure even distribution & let them set for a week, covered with tarps to keep the moisture in. & then filled them after 2 weeks with mostly half decomposed wood chips which would finish by the time spring planting came back around. They've stood up with no cracks, no mole/vole invasions & good, healthy soil for 3 years now.

Another great video. I've been a landscape contractor for 35 years and learned from many mistakes. I see an issue that will happen eventually. Your fruit tree roots will find the water from your raised beds and raise havoc. You never mentioned redwood for raised beds. I build a lot of raised beds for customers and use redwood only. Also, from my experience all fasteners that are supplied with the Vego raised beds and all the other brands supply what they call stainless steel fasteners. The stainless steel is very poor quality and they all rust in about 2-5 years. Never give up!

I have 6 of the olive green ones and love them. Starting my 3rd season with them and still in perfect condition. No rust or anything. I basically plant them on a sqft garden planting, and for the corners, i plant cucumbers, melons etc. things that will grow over the side to the ground.
