@monicastricker3582 it kind of does, in this instance. Surrounded by a patriarchal and reproaching environment, it's impressive that he got into his skull that trying and remaining that way to his wife would never bring him what he found attractive about her in the first place. True, she also does go down routes that should make her pay more, but fair to lenient consequences always come to them.

@@monicastricker3582 it absolutely does. 23 is very young and this is his FIRST relationship after growing up not really seeing many healthy relationships. He panicked and reacted harshly but also self regulated which was impressive.

One of my absolute favourite scenes! That perfect sparring dance rapidly transitioning between gentle concern, irritation, indignation, anger, full-blown wrath, hurt and anguish, followed by tender reconciliation is probably the best acted sequence in the entire series.

The only tiny bit of criticism I have for this otherwise superbly acted scene is the voiceover at the end. For me it falls flat when Jamie explicitly declares to viewers that he is in love with Claire. It's cringy. And utterly unnecessary. Did the producers have an urge to reassure the audience after the fight: "But that's okay, he still loves her"? If so, they poorly misjudged their audience, and broke one of the most important rules in cinema: "Show it, don't say it."

There was a reason for it. This was the first episode of the second part of season 1, which the producers and writers wanted narration from Jamie’s perspective. The episode began this way. And also picked up from his perspective in rescuing Claire from BJR (entering through the window etc). It makes better sense with the beginning narration.

And this is why friends Outlander is a success, how Sam and Cait's portrayal of Jamie and Claire themselves so true to the story and to what a marriage goes through. Forgiven is the reason of the success of marriages. It was this scene that in the chemistry test that showed how good performers they are. Yes, they are not perfect but speak truth to the love that passes understanding. Season 8 the last waiting to see how it will end.

Claire behaves like an infantile child the whole way through this scene, saying anything and everything to not take responsibility for her own actions. She lashing out and trying to hurt the man who saved her just to protect her own foolish pride. She has zero gratitude. It's a childish temper tantrum, and a proper man of the period probably would have just decided since she was going to act like a child to spank her.

What the fuck are you talking about? Men are still this way. Victim blaming is like the one thing men can agree on when it comes to women. And don’t start crying about, “not all men”…..it’s enough of them that you probably know several women that have gone through it. For evidence look at the responses you got from men. They think he was right.

In the books, I really got sick of Claire's arrogance. She was constantly putting others in trouble because she thought she knew so much. She may have been savvy in the 1940's but not in Jamie's time. Then, she was dangerously and foolishly arrogant.

I know they need to create drama to keep the show going but letting her playing feminist all the time refusing to listen to her husband and putting both of them in danger was infuriating. After he got raped because she refused to obey his commands and stay put I started to feel discussed by her character. She sucks 🤮

Would you also describe a man who thinks independently and does what he wants without consulting others as stubborn? Or would you call him decisive and assertive? I sense a double standard from you regarding the same behaviours from men and women...

It wasn't her fault that he got raped. He went off with the Watch and was captured. Randal wanted Jamie from the moment he saw him. He tried to have his way with him the first time Randal took him. Claire was at Lallybrock waiting for him to come back.

@@leoniep9231 Yes, I would if the book was written in the sense that Jaime was in a matriarchal society and was expected to obey Claire. For me, this isn't about feminism. This is about Claire being stupidly stubborn. Should she have to obey him? No. Were their expectations about men and women fucked up? Of course. However, she knows what this society is like and what's expected of her. This doesn't just affect her; it affects Jaime and his relationship with his men as well. They had to risk their lives to rescue her all because she was trying to get back to the stone. She should have stayed put. Of all people, she knows that the English are everywhere. If she had to marry Jaime for protection, talking a walk alone as a woman was peak stupidity.

Men at least have the sense to know what environment they are in and adapt. Claire was just annoying after years of refusing to recognize she is in 18th century Scotland and has put Jamie and too many in danger with her attitude and outbursts of feminism which is rooted in lack of accountability and selfishness.

He should have listened to her. She told him to take her with him.
