A distinction which will be waved aside with a simple, "That doesn't make it better." People see the words, "RDJ in blackface" and immediately throw out any semblance of context. Pointing it out to them is essentially calling them ignorant (by the literal definition of the word) and they're not, in a million, trillion years, going to agree and say you're right.
@ianbrown18105 жыл бұрын
@@buca117 i mean does the context make it better? Like its a white man playing a white man in heavy makeup to be black, sure in the story it is seen as extremely wrong but still is the action of putting that in the movies plot racist? Would it have been funnier if they casted a black actor? Or did they need to put a white actor through heavy makeup to look black?
@buca1175 жыл бұрын
@@ianbrown1810 Yeah, because the former is racist, the latter is a joke at racism's expense. He's wearing blackface despite the fact that there's a perfectly good black "actor" as part of the cast. They (Tom Cruise's character) did it because they wanted to have a black man on the team while also killing off the black guy first, but didn't trust an actual black man to fill the role. We the audience are supposed to look at that and laugh, because it's a satirical jab at Hollywood racist hypocrisy. Basically, it's mocking racism by highlighting it. Or by "starting a conversation," to use the overly sensitive crowd's vernacular.

RDJ did such a good job with the character. The makeup department also did an amazing job. 2 months before the movie came out I was mad because his name was on the poster but I never once saw him on the poster or in the trailer. Then one day I looked at it long enough and my jaw was on the floor. This whole time I was wondering who this random black dude was, so I was not ready for the reveal/lore behind his character. Also he portrayed a black character without needing to rely on stereotypes, while ironically the actual black character was more of a stereotype. Tropic Thunder, great writing, great acting.

Had Tropic Thunder not had a black actor as part of the main cast then I could see some people getting angry over RDJ’s character, even though his character was funny. But they had an actual black actor in the main cast and their interactions together were absolutely hysterical. Brandon Jackson played his character’s outrage at the best black role in the war film being played by a white actor so, so well. It was great. IIRC RDJ was kinda scared and aired the film with the NAACP and they were fine with the character. Tropic Thunder is one of the few actually funny movies of the past twenty years. Edit: people seem to forget that the film was a comedy poking fun at actors, producers, talent agents, method acting, the whole nine yards. And damn it was true to life too.

They were making fun of Hollywood past of getting white actors to play poc. Did you just see a picture of his character or something?

@HNMusicVideos2 жыл бұрын
Jamie's got it 100% right. Most of us Black people weren't offended by the character. Robert D did a good job in that movie. Now, it's a different question if a film uses a White actor to play a Black character when there are millions of available Black actors. But, that wasn't the case here. The role called for a White actor who gets so deep into his role that he lives the part of his Black character. Downey killed it. And the reactions from the Black actor in the movie, Brandon Jackson, made it even better.
@Want2SurfNow2 жыл бұрын
But wait.... How can you say it's not right to have a white actor play a black character, but its ok to have a black actor play a white character? As we've seen lately with these adaptations of old movies and such. There is a severe disconnect with the whole "equality" thing because it's only considered moving towards equality when you're giving one certain race or gender more opportunities and complaining when another race or gender gets those same opportunities. We don't live in the 40s, 50s, 60s or even 70s anymore. The notion that we're still "so behind" is just absolutely ridiculous. Jamie said it best, people are just constantly looking for things to bitch about, they search out things to be "offended" by. But the fact is, if you get offended by something thats YOUR fault, because you allowed it to affect you.

When Tropic Thunder came out Ben Stiller took so much crap for Simple Jack it totally overshadowed Downey's blackface.

RDJ was not playing a black man. He was playing a white actor playing a black man, and that was the real joke of the movie

Truth Hurts Actually, it can be easily argued that they're way ahead of us on the evolutionary scale. Supremely enhanced resistance to solar radiation due to more melanasomes protecting their DNA, red twitch muscles allowing for both better long distance running and short distance running, better jumping ability, denser stronger muscle, more densely packed hair to further protect from UV radiation. Also, the hair's helix structure allows for more scalp breathe-ability to help keep cool while still blocking out the sun. Yet more, their hair retains oil well, and uses the oil to keep the hair healthy, and so their hair does not require cleaning as frequently. That's probably due to adapt for lack of water in African climates. Lastly, and most importantly, you and I would be shit out of luck if nukes/emps start flying and we don't have computers/cell phones/microwaves/ovens/refrigerators/Wal-Marts/banks/credit cards/already prepared meals/air conditioning/heating/TV and all of the other things we're used to just buying with money to provide for ourselves, they will be fine. They're used to that life and know how to house, clothe, and feed themselves. You're just a moron living off of mommy and daddy. You're useless. The truth hurts.

Those are physical evolutionary traits due to living close to the equator and living among large terrestrial predatory animals. All of those modern inventions you listed were rest assured invented by some white or east asian male, so if your argument is that if you make the perfect conditions whereby the white people were stripped of their technological advantage, and were placed at a geographical disadvantage, well then you'd have South Africa, where the white people make it one of the better places to live on the continent.
