The Bomb Hole

Күн бұрын

His name is evocative of a method air - arguably the greatest one ever done, he is truly unlike anyone you will ever meet and the work he put in riding in the early years of his career shaped the foundation of Snowboarding as we know it today. This week we talk Mt. Baker Hardcore, FGCH Crew, riding with no gloves, 1910, Schoph, art, camp quarantine, volcom, Lib, pro model boards, filming in the early days, riding motorcycles cross country, how to handle bad situations, family life and so much more. It's no question Jamie helped take snowboarding away from that ski vibe we were heading towards in the early days and brought us closer to skateboarding and did it in the most pivotal and important time possible. Lately there has been much debate as to whether snowboarding is a sport or an art form. Spend a day or even an hour someone like Jamie and the answer is as clear as day. This life we love is something very special, its art and so much more and to understand it you have to jump in head first and experience it for your self. The best way to do that is to spend some time listening to the words and understanding the way's of today's very special guest Jamie Lynn and we just happen to have 3.5 hours of the legend himself. Enjoy!

Jamie's family was our neighbor when we all lived in Auburn, Washington. I was in his younger brothers class but always looked up to Jamie. And feared him a bit lol. He's was a tough kid. Not a bully or anything. Just pecking order kid stuff back in the day.

I got to hang with him and Matt Cummins at Hood for a few days. I’ll never forget them taking me to go cliff jumping into the Sandy River. I’m walking down a forest trail behind Jamie. Up ahead the tree line appears to be thinning and Jamie suddenly just takes off into a sprint towards the clearing and busts out a 1 1/2 front flip all cowboyed out diving 15-20 feet down into the glacial milk-colored river. Good times! Seen hits do some super gnarly airs and gaps in Tahoe too. Once he used the down ramp for an abandoned chairlift as the take off, went so big and somehow found a slight transition about 50 feet down the slope. No one was shooting or filming. I don’t recall even seeing Roach or Seone with him. He just wanted to gap it. 😂

I started riding Lib techs in 1997 and can’t ride anything else…ride an Emma Peel as my daily driver and Litigator or Emmagator in the pow..had a pair of Jamie Lynn boots back in the day amd a pair of Daniel Franck’s boots…Jamie was my hero…I still do his style methods with the back foot poke out forward showing the artwork on the lib tech haha…I always wondered where he got that from…I know the old school big mountain riders did methods that way grabbing the front of the board instead of between the bindings…and how he said he got it from caballero and Powell skaters…made me realize that’s how we use to do skate methods off or launch ramps…I just scored a Jamie Lynn Lib tech board from the 90’s today…super stoked…I have a Matt Cummins hanging on the wall already amd about 15 other Lib Techs in the shed

Practice on a trampoline. Basically do a bs 90ish off the lip. Pull your legs up and grab your heal edge just behind your lead foot. As you extend your rear foot counter the motion by reaching out your rear arm crossing over your grabbing (lead) arm. As your are approaching the peak of your air pull your grabbing hand as your reach out and kick your rear foot forward as hard as you can. With practice your rear foot with be ahead of you. As you begin to descend, your unwind your body, release your board throwing both of your arms behind you towards the jump using counter-rotation to push your nose/ board back towards zero degrees. Once you have a strong feel for it on the trampoline, take it to a smooth long-transition jump you feel comfortable on doing straight methods on. It seems to help to get fairly low going into the transition then ollie/jump off the lip into the method rather than just ride off the lip without jumping. The back foot ollie seems to help initiate the motion of extending your rear leg and bending your front leg at the same time. Remember to get the full potential of the tail forward, as you go off the lip your arms should be rotating back uphill just slightly, as if you want to do a backside 90. When you land, the counter rotation will push the nose forward. If you really wound up and kicked the tail out hard, the landing may be slightly blind for a brief moment as you counter rotate looking uphill to get the nose forward.

Those were the days, my buddies and I started riding at Baker in ‘85 and at 57 now a couple of us never stopped and are still riding today 39 years later. It wasn’t uncommon to run into some pro riders on the hill, in the lift lines or in the lodge/bar. Some of the riders I’ve seen at Baker are big guns like Lynn, Kelly, Line, Terje, Cummins, Pharoh (sp?), Ranquet, Bas, Kidwell, Sims, Palmer and even Steve Caballero, when your around that kind of talent weekly at your local resort your riding evolves much quicker. In my view Lynn is still the method god. Myself and a couple buddies started competing against these guys from the Banked Slalom at Baker, to Hood and Northern Idaho. Those were some of our best times, 19 years old, a local sponsor that paid all of our entry fees, hotel, and even the use of their company van along with the gas card. Baker had the reputation at local events, we would proudly write Baker as our “hometown”on the entry forms, and I remember hearing other riders saying “those dudes are from Baker” pointing at several groups of us in the lodge or at the starting gate. Stoked everything worked out for you Lynn, you’re a humble guy but know it’s that mentality that kept you relevant in the young mans sport

What a legend. I remember seeing Jamie compete in a big air contest in London (UK) right in the centre of Covent Garden on a huge man-made jump. Must have been around 1996. At the end of the comp he gave away his board to a kid in the crowd - we couldn't believe it! Such a cool guy.

34:49 - 35:23 Let it be known Jamie never does a behind-the-binding method grab because he can tweak it out more. THANK YOU for clarifying because so many riders try to give riders like Nicholas Muller crap for going above the binding when it's obviously better for tweaking the method out.

If you haven’t seen the video Project 6, it is a MUST watch. Riding, soundtrack, style, everything was just a game changer. Terje made you want to poke EVERTHING and learn 1 footers, Iguchis butter clinic opened up flat snow possibilities, and the list goes on. Most notably in this video it is the perfect example of Jamie’s riding! As a kid in 1993 and seeing a rider who looked at home on his board more than anyone else. Doing tricks like the 270 on to the rail, smoothest spins, signature methods and wanting to bonk and jib everything that wasn’t snow! For me personally, this video was the most inspiring and was my entire basis on how things should look when you ride. It 100% made me the rider I am today. (To this day if I’m running a beanie with glasses I still pull them over the top and side of my frames because of Jamie in this movie 😆) PROJECT 6: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qaeTiddz28qleoE.html Side note: I just watched it again and realized Brian Thien does a Back 180 onto a rail in the opening sequence.

Sup Dogs. I feel your pain on this one. Getting a Jamie print would have been sick. Just to keep it fair with Jamie we knew that lots of peeps would want them so we did up the numbers for sure. We also only let the patreon have access to 20. We do want it to be dope perk for them but we also don’t want them to sell out. Don’t do this if your strapped but that first patreon tear is only 5 bucks a month and you get that perk. Next time you see us do a post on Tuesday telling you who the guest will be the next day the prints will be on the site soon after. The hard part about doing more prints is just imagine finishing what was almost a 4 hour pod with someone like Jamie or Rice and then being like hey dog you cool to sign 300 prints for us. Haha so we try to keep it pretty chill. Also it makes the prints way more special to the peeps that score one. Anyway better luck next time and thanks for the support with watching the show!!!!

I started on Lib 28 years ago, then went Gnu/Lib as a main diet for around 10 years until a magic K2 board lured me away. I still test rode the occasional Lib Tech and loved SOME of them (hated others!) but a lot of good people make a lot of good boards these days. Capita (among others) deserve their rep. I find them to ride with a lot more life/excitement than Lib. Never Summer make awesome boards particularly if you want a burly machine to cut through heavy chop. Venture are kick ass in the backcountry. Horses for courses, but i'd say i've officially outgrown Mervin. That said they were in a league of their own in the early days.
