Stupid question maybe but what does restoration mean exactly?

​@@mkooij Don't know if you ever got or found the answer since it's been 3 months since you asked. But, this is the first I'm seeing this video and your question so I'll try: The SNES sound chip is sample based, which means that it uses snippets ("samples") of recorded audio captured from an external audio source to reproduce as game audio. The sounds used for the instruments in the music programmed for these games is sampled from actual real world synthesizers. But because the SNES sound chip can only store up to a maximum 64KB of audio in memory, the audio samples need to be very small in size in order to fit them all within that limit. Much of the sound quality of the original source is lost when squeezed and cut down into samples that fit under the 64KB constraint for the SNES as a result. What restoration means here is that the original real world instruments/synthesizers that were used as the source of the samples for the in game music instruments were brought back to perform the programmed game music. What we are hearing here is a recording directly of those instruments performing the game music, as they originally sound, before their sounds got chopped and sampled down to the constraints and limitations of the SNES hardware.

🤷‍♂️ I have never played these games so I have no idea. I just find the original sources and do my thing. I play 5 games and Donkey Kong is 4 of them

It might have something to do with the compression of the instruments honestly. Chrono Trigger got off easy imo

Some of the Synthetic Origins restorations are amazing, but for Chrono Trigger I feel like a lot of them don't quite match up to the sound of the original. I might just be extra picky when it comes to the music for this game though. I'd still say about half of the restorations are great though.

It's absolute trash and should never be mentioned but since some humans like doing things they're told not to do, I will be here to remind you and remind everyone how much of a trash that song is whenever I see it.
