You might want to consider replacing the restrictor plate on the joystick (The clear plastic thing that restricts the stick's movement at the base). The square style like came installed is meant for fighting games. Octagonal is generally desirable for most other stuff like classic games, making it easier to not accidentally trigger a diagonal. As an example, picture your test game here River Raid. You're going through a tight channel in the river and pull back on the stick to navigate it slowly. With the square gate, it's really easy as you're pushing the stick back to accidentally trigger a diagonal input and send your jet careening into the cliffside. With octagonal, you're physically able to feel that you're only triggering down.

The generic name is a Lockbox. Though, the hooks in that one, makes it a Key box. (The holes in the back are for wall mounting, not for feet) It's a nice looking joystick! Great work as always!

Why not go all the way, and make it an independent an dedicated arcade machine by putting a raspberry pi inside? And maybe also make place for the power supply and extension cabels inside so you just have to open it, take the power supply and needed cables out, connect the arcade PC and TV and you are ready to play! ... Heck! Why not also a suitcase handle, so it is easy to take with you on the go! ...YES it will be a bigger project! But an AWESOME ONE! 😃👍

OMG so many ideas! Autofire button. An "up" button for all those games that use "up" for "jump", Possibly a "down" button for the handful of games that use "down" for an action (Looking at you, starquake). A slowstep button (Basically just an autofire circuit on all directions, so when you hold the button, rather than being held down, the direction is pulsed/stepped). Powerpad buttons (for Atari 800 series). Buttons 2 and 3 for Amstrad series. Port for Amstrad player 2. Too many idea? Yeah I hear you.

I made myself a joystick for my C64 and Amiga out of cheapo arcade clone parts a couple of years ago too. I added two buttons on mine, one for Fire and the other is wired to Up so it can act as a jump button. I also added a switch on the back that changes the second button from Up to Secondary Fire for those Amiga games that supports it like Turrican. In hindsight I maybe should've added a third button so I could have both a jump button and fire 2 at the same time, but it works well enough as it is. Nice work Jan!

Actually yes, I would say this has inspired me to do a project like this. I've actually already gone through and parted everything out, plan to use wood, and lacquer it, and will likely use a teensy to wire it up and probably just make it pretend to be a 360 controller for a basic "universal compatibility"

Pretty fun project! I think you know what buttons to add in the future, since that box has so much room: a button that's wired to "up" for jump, and a separate autofire button, maybe a knob for varying the rate. For Amiga, make a switch to toggle the jump button to be the secondary fire. that would be the ultimate retro stick.

I made something similar. For the cable I just put a 9Pin male female connector on the joystick box , I can plug in an extension like cable to the the joystick and the computer. It means I can still use my extension cable for others things. The cable is just a couple IDC press-fit connectors with ribbon wire, works well.

Well, in some way this is a Monster Joystick... if you think of Frankenstein, that is. I really like this project. Being cheap ass but also an ingenious idea, it's right down my alley, if only I found a similar box...

I would probably make the cable removable by mounting some round connector (maybe DIN for easy hole drilling) and put the counterpart on the cable, that way you can just unplug and lock the cable inside for storage :). Also usually the stick is mounted 90 degrees rotated, so you can fit more buttons next to it, but that is probably not worth redoing now....

Cool project; pro-tip: you can remove the metal plate from the joystick and use the inner four screws for mounting instead; this is useful because the plastic washer the covers the hole, also covers those screws up, and you don't have extra screws visible on the thin surface (or rubbing on your hands, etc.). 😉

you could get an A4 perspex and make holes to lay over the top, JS center / buttons, will make you hand slide easier without damage. you can also get a cheap key as they have a number on lock and is fairly standard.

Turned out really nice! It reminds of my "Competition Pro Board" (search in my channel as I am most likely not allowed to post YT links) from the 80's, which I slightly upgraded a year ago. 😁 As you have plenty of room, an adjustable auto fire (as I have in my Board) is the next logical step. A link to a diagram for this is in the video description of my "Board" video. It's not as trivial as you might think. ^^ Keep in mind that you need a new cable with +5V (Pin 7) connected! Maybe a paddle controller is an option, too. Not sure, how this will work. Maybe Pin 5 is used for that. And which games do support this. 🤔

Vielleicht hast du mal ein herz für die Deutschen User und bedienst sie auch, aber ich glaube nicht daran da deine Zeit hierfür nicht reicht. In diesem Sinne Tolles Video Matze
