I had not seen this version. It is mentioned at the IMDb site. Sally Anne Howes is delightful as Jane Eyre

At the end of her story, Charlotte Brontë writes that Jane Eyre and Mr. Rochester have been married for ten blissful years and that she and Rochester enjoy perfect equality in their life together. She says that after two years of blindness, Rochester regained sight in one eye and was able to behold their first son at his birth.

Now, that was an experience 😊 I stuck with it though. Through the self-indulged screenwriting, stage performance feel, audio problems at key points, and zealous directing, I stuck with it. If you knew nothing about the emotional depth of Ms Bronte's classic, this adaptation would be taken as is. But for Fans of the written work and history of many award-worthy performances, Fans may grimace, shake their head and give a hard sigh, but we would get through it. Popcorn 🍿 and 🥤 Soda Pop may help😊 Yes, this was definitely an experience...

Thank you for posting this version, it is one I had not seen before. I appreciate watching the various verions of this romantic story. This rendition may not be the best, but I enjoyed the different take. Having to shorten the book to a mere one hour is a challenge and the imagination that the screen writers use to fill the gaps are always entertaining as well as imaginative. Thank you, again.

Your balanced remarks made me delete my own as it was too complaining. Sure, we'd all love to see a perfect Jane Eyre - one not truncated or miscast, perhaps. But I did just revisit the Welles' version, setting high the bar. 😊 Blessing to you, years down the line from another Bronte lover.

I agree. It is always interesting to see how they approach it, and the performances of the two leads. I'm always pleased when I find a version I have not seen before.

Too many scenes missing sound! This was obviously a made-for-television adaptation with some very serious changes to the plot. Glad I saw this but I wouldn't recommend it to other Jane Eyre enthusiasts.

True. For example, no horse scene for the first meeting with Mr. Rochester because it couldn’t be done due to production restrictions.

Poor Zachary Scott. He only lived a few years after this was broadcast. Rest in paradise, old chap. Re: the script: There were a few lines that were good, but the overall evisceration of the plot combined with loss of nuance made it a confusing, altogether different story. On a good day, these aren't easy characters to play. On a cramped set in less than an hour's time, maybe it was a bit too much to hope. Here's to Jane Eyre. Long may she live... unabridged.

This is an interesting old adaptation. Love the old Breck ads interspersed. The actress makes a lovely Jane. I always find it puzzling when scriptwriters throw out original dialog created by the author of a classic and insert their own hackneyed words. Why not use the original, beautiful dialog?

They should have saved the money and the time for this production. They literally butchered Brontë`s work. Too much of the original work was altered and Charlotte`s passion erased. In my opinion, it was wrong they were allowed to use the original title.

Goes without saying, this is a very condensed version. How was it managed to lose the sound during a majority of the key scenes. From reading the book a few times, Rochester and Jane, in this rendition were both a bit too nice looking. I thought George C. Scott made the best movie Rochester, and Susannah York was a bit too attractive, though she played a great part. There is another old movie version where both fit the looks, according to the book's indication, very well.

The 1970 version with George C. Scott and Susannah York was nice. But I agree, Susannah was almost too pretty for the role. My favorite older, Jane Eyre version is the 1943 adaptation by 20th Century Fox's Robert Stevenson staring Joan Fontaine and Orson Welles. The worst version that I have seen, so far, is the version by Monograph studios (1934) that starred Virginia Bruce and Colin Clive The 1949 version by the Westinghouse Hour that stars Charlton Heston, Betty Furness and Mary Sinclair is somewhat better than the monograph one. Heston's uber masculinity permeates the film.

@@here_we_go_again2571 Enjoyed your comments very much. Frankly, I try to savor something in all the versions - if only because, in my nascent dotage, reading shrill critiques is vexing. After all, the book is long, with many paths and detours. Almost any version will be found wanting. The power of Welles' Rochester, albeit abetted by a false, less pert, nose, swarthy complexion and the acting talent of Joan Fontaine, is probably my favorite. His tenderness was well-opposed by the 'scary' side of ER - that thing that was almost parodied in too many stage/ screen Jane Eyres. Edward Fairfax Rochester is not an easy role to play. With that in mind, a few thoughts on 'the lad'... Dalton might've been miscast, simply for being too gorgeous - a la 'Funny Girl''s Nicky Arnstein - "Oy! The groom was prettier than the bride!" - but I liked that miniseries. Ciaran Hinds' Rochester ached in ways that were believable. Actually, one sees that his might've been the exact visage Bronte had in mind for the character. And the perfection of Samantha Morton's Jane collided with him perfectly. Glad to see Heston get props for his turn at bat, too. Not sure I've seen him so young in anything else. (Fwiw, I knew CH through work and cared about him. Sure wish I'd known about that production at the time, because he was delightful and open when it came to discussing such things.) McCarthy, McNee, Hurt, Jayston - all terrific actors - just less ER than we desired/ needed. Last - and certainly not least - is George C. Scott. I don't agree with all of the was 'wrong' with him/York as the leading couple - chief among the barbs - were ones about York's age. Yet I wonder if GCS's particular brand of sexy would've even worked with a younger actress than SY's Jane. Ah - Fassbender and Stevens. I appreciated them both. Stevens gave new complexity to ER and won me over by the end. Oh my. Now I'm seeing all of these actors in my mind's eye - ones who'd be perfect - and oh so wrong - for Edward. Anyone you can think of who should've had a try?

@@mortalclown3812 Thank you, I enjoyed reading your opinion of the actors playing EF Rochester. "Nascent dotage" That is where I am at too. 😁 "The Golden Years turn to brass quickly" is my new mantra. I have not seen all of the versions of JE. Last night I did see the 2006 version with Ruth Wilson and Toby Stephens. I thought that both suited the description of Jane and Rochester in the novel. If Rochester doesn't creep me out at some point I view the portrayal as a failure. My inner self screams: "DANGER! Get away from that weirdo!" when he reaches that point in the novel (prior to and just after the interrupted marriage ceremony). Unlike Jane, I have not been raised in a harsh, sparse, and very sheltered environment.

Weak version, couldn't stand to watch more than a few minutes... PS. (a few months later) Now I saw everything and it gets better by the end. So please have patience and watch until the end. :) A pity they didn't keep the original, beautiful dialogue. St. John Rivers as a comical character, that's new to me. :) It's interesting that this is the only version where Mr. Rochester openly revolts against her narrow, rigid moral views, I often thought that indeed her views were rather narrow, but we can't judge, considering a woman's reputation at that time was very important.
