Hi Jane! I did some research for you here in UK & I found 2 online shops that sell the Moulin du Roy if you are interested. The first is Ken Bromley Art Supplies; more expensive than Jackson's but they also deliver in EU. I ordered from them in the past & they are reliable & give reward points. They sell the pads & the sheets. The other one, is called Silverprint. I never bought from them so I don't know but they also deliver in EU. I will also ask to my small local store. I am very grateful for all yr recommendations because really the supplies I purchase after watching yr videos are amazing. So thank you so much. I love Payne's grey colour, my 2 favourite brands are M.Graham & Qor but they're also expensive! You have the more beautiful artworks in a sketchbooks I have ever seen!! Great video, thank you Jane for sharing & yr generosity:)

I'm going to have to try the Canson Moulin du Roy. I really love the technique you use and how vibrant the colors are. I like to use pen and ink to line my work, so the smoother paper will work better for me. Thanks for the recommendation! You should know, Prussian Blue isn't really lightfast. It has a weird reaction, we're it fades in the light but comes back if the work is put back in the shade for a while, but sometimes it doesn't. It's a chemical reaction. Prussian Blue is created by oxidation of ferrous ferrocyanide salts and the UV bleaches that. When you put it away, the iron can reoxidize itself, so the colors comes back, but it can take a long time, if it does happen. I really wish paint, and pigment manufacturers would be more forward about it. I switched it for PB60, which is a similar hue but gets darker and is totally lightfast. It's called Delft Blue in Schmincke paints. Indanthrone Blue and Indanthrene Blue for most paint manufacturers. I also find that Phthalo Blue Red Shade is very similar, though a little less dark.

Someone already shared this in the comments and thanks for writing about it to such extend, I find it helpful. I myself focus more on painting than different pigments research and so I rely on the info from manufacturer and this one is marked 4/5 lightfastness rating. Still, I would never display my artwork in a direct sunlight and advice my customers that and also frame with uv glass.
@creativekay9221
@creativekay9221 2 жыл бұрын
I totally understand. It shouldn't be on the artist to research pigment, and we should be able to just trusts the info of the manufacturers. Sadly most lightfastness tests are done on the masstone, or with acrylic paints. Thickly applied paints make paints more lightfast. An acrylic binder will refract light, which helps a lot for lightfastness too. Diluted paints can fade a lot more. Winsor & Newton seems to be the only watercolor manufacturer (that I know off) who notes the issue with prussian blue. Some paints maker don't test their paints at all and just copies the ASTM rating of the pigment. It's such a shame. I think Qor is the only brand that actually both test the masstone and the dilution of their paints. Naphtol Reds and Antraquinone Reds ( PR170, PR177 ) are some of the other pigments that have a very high lightfastness ratings but is actually really fugitive diluted, which makes the mixes made with these paints also fugitive. I haven't done my own tests yet, but many tests I looked pointed out that Prussian Blue fades in about 3 months, which is as fast as very fugitive paints like dyes, neons, opera's etc. I'd highly recommend Kimberly's Crick website. www.kimcrick.com/pages/fugitive-pigments-list-lightfast-test-problems-art-supplies She makes extensive lightfastness testing for every brands and have a huge pigment database. Her blog is very thorough and explains all of this better than I ever could. She also have a KZfaq Channel. Handprint is also a good ressource, but it hasn't been updated in years and some info isn't accurate anymore. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news...:( I hope this helps.

I always love seeing what supplies other watercolor artists are loving. I’m super excited, as the Strathmore 400 Sketchbook you love will be arriving today! I ordered it awhile ago and am even more excited to receive it after hearing your thoughts on it. I think it was the moleskin sketchbook that you had issues with tape pulling paper with it. If that bothers you, use a heatgun or even blow dryer to help release the adhesive from the tape and then as you pull it, it shouldn’t tear your paper. I really enjoyed your video and have to say just how much I adore the portrait you showed! You are obviously a wonderful artist. Thanks for sharing all of your favorites and blessings to you!!

LYRA makes the best kneadable and faber castell the best wooden pencils. Kohinoor 5340 and the kohinoor 5.6mm Red chalk sepia and geaphite,are the best sketching pencil out there. Raphael makes the best brushes.

That designer gouache is in my go to bag as well and I was actually wondering about the Schminke one which is available in one of our local stores instead of having to order online. So thanks for that info. I use the Kohi Noor pencil eraser instead of the Tombow, but I will try that one when the other one is finished.

Oh I like and regularly use the Kohinoor pencil eraser, its a little less practical than Tombow (having to sharpen it) but also very cheap and the eraser is soft. I highly recommend that one often, but its harder to find online for internation audience. I can buy it locally for about 1€

Hi Jane!! I used the awesome masking fluid you sent me while on Holiday and worked like a charm. Though I said I was going to paint flowers, I ended up painting Max from Stranger Things as I was hooked on Season 4. I am still so early on in my watercolor journey I am still discovering what brushes I like and what brush shapes I actually use and like the most. Also I had a similar experience where I found my favorite mechanical pencil and when I wanted to buy another found it was discontinued! So disappointing. Great video! Really interesting to hear about the Sennelier masking fluid, as i’ve only used the blue Schmincke masking fluid, which is just a pain to peel off. One thing i would like to mention is that i believe all prussian blues (PB27) are somewhat fugitive and will fade over time, so i would suggest that you make your own lightfastness test of it :)
@lauramai4552
@lauramai4552 2 жыл бұрын
That being said, while its known to fade in sunlight, it’s also known to regain its color in shade, so while it sucks that it doesn’t have great lightfastness, i think it’s pretty cool never the less
@JaneBeata
@JaneBeata 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you Laura, I plan to make a lightfastness test of all my colors but I never have enough time to play with my collection quite as much as I'd like. And so I do what I think lots of others do to save time, rely on the info we are provided by the manufacturer and here it states rating 4/5, while Indigo only has 2/5. Such a shame, I love that color. So I sincerely hope this color won't behave in a way I wouldn't expect too much. I also advice customers never to hang an artwork to a place where there is direct sunlight in the room at any time of the day.

Hi such a great video! So Im not sure if you know but Prussian Blue PB27 is not lightfast, Prussian Blue is a fugitive color, the lightfast ratings on the tubes are incorrect. Its hard to explain in a simple comment but their are several videos on KZfaq discussing the fugitive nature of Prussian Blue. Also I live in Arizona, USA and did lightfast testing for all the major brand Prussian blues and all faded severely:( Here are some videos that discuss Prussians blue being fugitive: *1. Kimberly Crick Art: Daniel Smith watercolor lightfast test- most fugitive pigment list- Paint fading in 6 months *2. Jay Nathan watercolor: Prussian Blue PB27 Watercolor Comparison *3. Natasha Newton Art: watercolor lightfast tests 1 | Fading seen in Daniel Smiths Prussian Green within one week! These are just a few videos thats discuss Prussian Blue, which is the pigment PB27, being fugitive; despite brands labeling the paint lightfast. The best way to check if a paint you have is fugitive is to make a diluted swatch of the paint and cut it in half and hang one half in a window that gets direct sunlight and put the other half in a dark drawer that stays shut all the time. Then after a few months compare the 2 halves- if the diluted swatch in the window looks lighter or different than the swatch half that was put in the dark drawer then you know the paint is NOT lightfast. Side note: Its important that the paint swatch you hang in the window is diluted with lots of water and not just a full strength masstone swatch because often times fugitive paints fade severely in diluted, watered-down washes; which most of us paint in layers of diluted paint. Tho some people do make two swatches: a masstone swatch and a diluted swatch to hang in the window...Anyway Im sorry for the unsolicited information- I just know that I wish someone had helped me with important info such as this before. You, of course, can still enjoy Prussian Blue in sketchbooks and pieces that wont be exposed to light since its such a beautiful color, ya no..Anyway I hope this helps and Im so sorry about the super long comment and the unsolicited information lol...Anyway I love your video, thank you so much for sharing and much love💙💜🧡❤
@JaneBeata
@JaneBeata 2 жыл бұрын
Already got 2-3 comments about that, many thanks for explaining in depth. I am always pondering if my time spent by doing paint tests is a good investment, I barely have 3 hours a day to paint now with my baby and I really can't quite come in terms of putting the pigment properties research before the actual painting right now, so I rely on the info I get from a manufacturer. But I'll think about doing tests of all the colors I have in the future maybe. I still don't think any of my collectors would hang my watercolor in a direct sunlight. They all know better.

Fun fact in the green plate has a face ahuahuahua 😅!!! i'm confusing you and Anca when you said Slovakia I thought you will say romenia , I like to follow people from other countries, I'm from Brasil . I have the same mechanical pencil that you have in white, pastel green and orange , I would like to have the dark blue one, my favorite is the orange. Pentel discontinued them, I have a similar model that change the top click led and body color but the grip is the same, after the video I google and find this other model in 0,3; 0,5; 07 and the graph600 in 0,7 in dark blue. If you want I can buy and send to you and you pay the mechanical pencil and shipping, where I can show you the other model to see if you like is the graph 620? Hey Jane! Good 👍 video. Can you do me a quickie favor and link me to the Moulin du Roy A4 bloc at Jackson's. I have the pad in my cart to take out separate sheets, but I want the bloc and am confused on the website which is which. If you go to Jackson's it clearly states blocs for the Hot Press, but then for cold Press it says Gummed which I think is it. Is it? I'm asking bc you said you purchased a block. So do a girl a favor and direct link it here so I'm not confused anymore. I don't want to make a mistake and get the wrong thing and have to return it. I have the Strathmore and it does work pretty good, lays flat, handles watercolors well. I purchased the exact Koval book you got bc my etchrs sometime come undone after painting a lot in them - it's a design flaw. It handled your expressive work well, so I took the plunge.
