“When I’m not sure what I want to crochet next but want to spend some time with my yarn.” I totally get that! 😊 Thanks for this. I do have a yarn winder that I like but I’m lazy sometimes and it’s WAY over there so I often just roll my leftover yarn into a ball. I always work from the outside but find center-pull balls are still easier to work with as they don’t roll around as much.

I so relate to this! lol. "it's WAY over there" EXACTLY 😂 So many times I wanted to wind a ball, but the winder was set up on the other side of the room......funny how being lazy forced me to try a different way LOL! Thanks for watching.

My father made a nostepinne for me several years before he died, which I will treasure forever. I had just gotten into knitting, and had bought several hanks of yarn that needed to be wound. I was pleasantly surprised at just how much I enjoyed this process, as it is an art form unto itself, and it is so rewarding! Make sure you tuck the label of the yarn, if you still have it, into the center of the cake, and remember to tuck it back in again, after use, if you do not use all the yarn, so that you have all its information right there when you need it. As your yarn collection grows, you will surely regret not having that information when you need it!

That is such an awesome gift from you dad to always have, and a great memory. It really is an art form on its own. Great tip with the label, it is very hand to have that info if the yarn has been in your stash for awhile too. Thanks so much for watching.

Great advice on keeping the angle at 45°. I have a ball winder, but I still roll by hand sometimes. When I first learned, I was taught to start by winding the yarn around your fingers in a figure eight. I'm going to have to test both ways and see which pulls more easily. Also, a tall, narrow pill bottle works really well for winding. You can just tuck the yarn end into the bottle and put the cap back on so you don't lose it.
@jspcreate
@jspcreate 8 ай бұрын
Thanks for the tip, the empty pill bottle with cap is a great idea. I used to use yarn winders all the time, and realized how important that 45 degree angle seemed to be. I think I might have started with the figure eight as well. It may give the center more body. Might have to try it again. Enjoy!

Whilst researching wool winders your video popped up on my YT home page … and I’m so glad it did. As I knit and crochet a lot of toys and decorations I mostly use a variety of smallish balls of wool - 50g (1.75oz) or less. Like my Mom and Grandmother I always rewind my balls of wool before using them to check for knots, blemishes and faults before using in a project. This has always been into round balls, which, ofc, being round can be tricky if you can’t place it somewhere it can unwind without rolling away. So I wondered if I could make ‘flat balls’ of wool as seen in many a shop. Hence the research and hence watching your video. Lovely clear, no nonsense instructions by which I have now successfully rewound some wool. Thank you so much.

GREAT winding tutorial! One thing I thought of about that center "tail" of yarn was to put a piece of tape on the end, which will keep the end visible should it get almost covered and also will be a good way for you to find that starting piece. I got the idea from HOBBI yarns which puts an "easy start" piece of paper stuck to the end for you to start pulling from the center. Thanks again for teaching me how to wind remnants MUCH better and nicer than winding it around a toilet tissue cardboard like I had been. 🙂

I've done it this way, used a toilet paper tube, but for a very long time I've used a nøstepinde. Do I use a ball-winder? Yes. Most of the time, I make cakes with it off hanks I toss onto my swift. But I still use the nøstepinde for very delicate yarns that the ball-winder can sometimes treat poorly. The slower speed allows me to tinker with the twist a bit, and it can be rather meditative, as others here have already commented.

It is really great to have many options, different yarn calls for different techniques. I used to set the ball winder up in the living room and my hubby complained of the noise, he prefers my quieter method lol. Enjoy and thanks for watching

Thanks! Another advantage to doing this is that, if there are knots in the yarn, or other problems due to manufacturing,you will find them during this process, and you’ll be able to eliminate them before you start your project!
@jspcreate
@jspcreate 6 ай бұрын
Really great point, because it is so disturbing when you are part way through a row and a knot comes creeping out of the ball 😣 This does help you check the yarn out so you are smooth sailing once you start working on a project. Thanks for sharing this tip. Enjoy

How cool is this?! I have a yarn winder and the post that makes the hole in the center is big and I always say I wish it was thinner, lol, plus when the "cake" gets big, it just starts sliding off and when you're in the middle of winding at lightspeed, it can create a huge mess with the yarn getting caught in the winder's gears. My "cake" got tight right away, but holy cow this was easy. Thanks for the tip!

Just seen this, bit late to the table so to speak! I've been doing the same but with the inside of a toilet paper tube, folded in half with beginning yarn lying in the crease. Was looking for a video to see if I was doing it right. I wasn't! I didn't turn enough of have the right angle. Now I know, but I'll still use the empty tube as I've got miss shaped joints. So glad I stopped by to watch. Thank You. X

This is great. Since I couldn't purchase a yarn winder, I have been using an old small diameter piece of pvc pipe to wind yarn into cakes. I never considered just using my thumb instead. Aaaawww thos is beautiful! My yarn ball winder broke. It came wi the a knitting machine and i havent mustered up the courage to replace it. Thw messy yarn drives me crazy. I have been using a spoon with a really smooth round handle to wind my yarn. However the tiny center sometimes makes it difficult to pull the yarn from the center. Also the 'ball' is not a round. So this will work perfectly if i can master the skill! Thanks for sharing!

Thanks so much for your kind words. So glad you found this video and hope it helps. It does take a little practice, each time I step away from doing it for awhile, I need to make a few balls before I get the feel for it again. I've broken a few ball winders and started doing it this way instead. I guess I'm rough on the winders lol.
