The third episode of our Women In Economics series is on Janet Yellen, the first woman to chair the Federal Reserve and an influential monetary policy scholar.
If you can think it, Janet Yellen has probably done it-her theoretical contributions in macroeconomics and her practical applications in policy are so extensive, we couldn’t even fit it all into one video!
In this video, featuring interviews from Ben Bernanke, Christina Romer, and Janet Yellen herself(!), we see her journey from humble Brooklyn beginnings after the Great Depression all the way to becoming the first female Federal Reserve Chair!
So how’d she do it? Watch to find out!

Though she lacked female role models, Janet Yellen remained steadfast in her interest in applying economics to help others-and in the process, became a role model herself for young women all over the world. Chairing the Fed ain’t a bad accomplishment, either. Learn more about Yellen here: bit.ly/3ammyUt More Women In Econ: bit.ly/3anCIgH

It's interesting to see that this video has the lowest rating among the "Women in Economics" series. I wonder if people are responding negatively because they feel like Yellen doesn't need the "Woman" qualifier since she is already well known. The other 2 women featured in this series are relatively unknown, and those videos are rated higher. I guess I'm just trying to understand what drives anti-SJW sentiment in KZfaq ratings.

I think it's the fact that she's a Keynesian and the other 2 featured women are not. Plus there's a reflexive response by some to be anti-anything trolls. Don't burn too many calories trying to figure them.

Anyone working at a central bank thinks Keynes is relevant. If Keynes wasn't right about sticky prices and downturns, central banks wouldn't exist.

This lady is a monetary crank and avid Keynesian. You'd think they'd atleast use GOOD economists for inspiration. For those who haven't read him, one of Keynes most prominent ideas was that workers will strike and leave the work force if they see their wage fall. BUT if their wage stays the same and all the prices in the economy rise they'll be too stupid to notice that technically their wage fell. So under constant and unending inflation a group of central economists can perpetually dupe the workers into not striking or leaving their job to go somewhere else when their wage falls. Not only is it elitist and crude, expansionism has failed to work every time and place it has been implemented. Printing money only increases the quantity of money people have to bargain over the same amount of goods. It creates a WORSENING of the shortages in this regard. Its about as economically sound as that bridge to nowhere in Alaska.

I don't think MRU is arguing her policies were good or bad, just that she was accomplished and influential in a male-dominated field. I thought it was pretty interesting.

@@pazmanian Economics is the study of managing scare resources. It's a social science and it's also referred to as the "dismal science". Let's recognize the achievement of economist, not their gender.

@@pazmanian I'm so sick of you SJW apologists. They're putting this economist on a pedestal just because of her gender. If she were born a man, then MCU would not have made this video. It's preferential treatment of people based on gender rather than their competence. And that's disgusting. Why are you pretending as if there's no issue here?

@@victoneter MRU teaches economics. There are many theories. Some we agree with and some we don't. From totalitarianism to monarchies to democracies, we are taught about many types of systems to govern the people, some we agree with some we don'. I'm not afraid to learn about someone I don't agree with. Yellen is undeniably very well educated, well known and accomplished. Highlighting that she's a female is sometimes relevant, especially in a male-dominated field as economics and subsequently becomes chairman of the federal reserve. To deny that sexism in the past didn't play a role in prestigious positions in the past is as silly as saying it should play a role in the future. The video showed all her qualifications, not just being a woman, but a woman who achieved in what was a male-dominated field. That is part of the story.
