Great video. We like to plant our beds in half, lengthwise when need. I go crazy with all the back and forth. Going the distance cuts the breakdance in half. The only care I have when jangin' is to reduce too much wavy lines so that I can use my hoes to cultivate weeds easily in between the rows. Makes a huge difference over the crop cycle. Besides that, its always. good enough for who its for. Great tips to increase speed and loosen perfection where its not needed. You are a machine!

Great video, keep putting out quality like this and the sky is the limit. If it helps at all you could speed the process up by splitting the beds lengthwise, i.e. less starting and stopping. I am sure there are other benefits to this method that I am not aware of quite yet. Maybe , an episode going into detail on why you find things work best and how you came to those conclusions as it pertains to bed layout would be beneficial, for those of us that learn so much from your experiences, would be intriguing.

Hey really quick question how do you put down a weed barrier with this seeder? I dealt with this last year because I hate weeding but I couldn't direct sow and keep the barrier from shifting

These beds are very neat, how did you make them and do they stay well-maintained over time? Since I plan to grow on land that I don't own, I want to know how I can keep things as neat as possible.

I'm curious what size those mini-fields are? I assume the beds are about 30in, with something like 6-8in between each bed. But it seems like more than 12-13ft wide...

I've been doing my research and I am leaning towards the Hoss seeder. It seems to be above quality over Earthyway and much more affordable then the Jang. Curtis do you have an opinion on the Hoss? Anyone else got some input? PS Curtis you are a hero to civilisation. I walk with you. I could write a long thank you letter explaining, but I don't think I need to as you probably already know why. I speak for humanity when I say thank you for all this.

I'm not a fan of the Hoss. It's heavy and clunky and I don't know any farmers that use it.
@powaowa1
@powaowa1 7 жыл бұрын
Urban Farmer Curtis Stone I got the impression from you that heaviery and clunky was better and ads more stability when pushing the seeder, something you said the earth way lacked. And from reading forums I get the impression that the feeding system just works better overall and not as many issues then the earth way. Can you please clarify why heavy and clunky is a bad thing in this case but with the Jang the heavier duty composition is your preference?

Daniel, I use the HOSS seeder and was ready to chuck it last year I was so upset with it's lack of consistency. I talked with the HOSS people and then found a guy on Facebook who uses it to success. He had the same issues as me. He told me to drill twice as many holes in #2 plate for lettuce and to drill the holes a little bigger. It was better to drop a BUNCH of seed (it's cheap compared to not getting ANY crop) and then either thin or grow it tight, like we do. I had some good success last year and early this year and then things have gotten worse this summer and so I too am looking into the Jang seeder. I know at one point Curtis STILL used the Earthway for his lettuce and spinach because he was not happy with how the Jang dropped those seeds. I'm wondering in the issue right now is more to d wit the heat than the seeder. So I will keep going at it with the HOSS for now.

The jang is worth it in every way. We have been using one for 7 years now and it is still my favorite hand precision seeder. The right tool for the right job. I use the hoss wheel hoes to cultivate large spaces quickly. Just work with your legs and use your arms to guide the wheel hoe. If you want to minimize soil disturbance, I use the wheel hoe to clear crops just harvested by undercutting it. We were clearing 4000 square feet of baby greens a week with it. I love my hoss too ( just not the seeder)

+Tree Amigos Curtis has said in the past that he doesn't like the Jang for Spinach and lettuce seed. But it sounds like you will use it for that. And you have found the feeder wheels that work for it in the Jang?

Wouldnt it be better to just blend the seeds 50/50 of the two different types and go with that? Ot maybe plant 3 rows one type and 4 rows the other? Less operations.
