I was lucky enough to stand at the foot of the stage while she tore her heart out and handed it to the audience, with each and every song. She took us through intense pain, heart ache and loss and we were broken right along with her. There was no way to thank her enough for huge gift she gave us. Some things make it worth being 70. This is one of them.

Yes you were fortunate to be there. We are contemporaries. I feel so fortunate to have been exposed to and immersed in this music as it flowed into the culture. It marks one to have had this at a formative age when our culture was in a formative stage.

I was lucky enough to see Janis twice in.1969, once very close to the stage. She played the first Atlanta Pop Festival, next to last act. Everyone worn out, tired after a weekend of music. After first bar of first song everyone up on their feet with Janis! No-one like her, I've been in love with her ever since.

I love how she walks out like she’s nervous, destroys the place, makes history, changes the way women sing rock ‘n’ roll for all time, and darts happily offstage.

The night she died she WAS feeling alone. What she didn't know was there was a letter waiting for her from the most recent guy she'd been seeing that he was coming to see her. This guy had made her very happy and she had been clean & sober with him. So she didn't pick up the letter from the desk clerk at her hotel and didn't know. Instead she felt very lonely and picked up again to a tragic result we all know.

I used to go see her and BB all the time. She was better live than any recording back then. Still listening over 50 years later.

When my oldest son was a toddler, he absolutely loved Me and Bobby Magee. He'd always say, Mommy, I really like this and he'd have a big ol smile on his face. Poor Janice shot up that last hit of smack, because she was so wanting and thinking that her guy and herself were going to get married. That's why she tried getting clean, to be able to have a family. They had a go-round on the phone, so she called up her old dealer. Unfortunately, she got a batch of at least 50% pure herion. It did her in and several other people in the surrounding area who obviously got their smack from the same dealer.

I cried my eyes out when I was about 7yrs old and my Mom told me Janis died decades ago. I had listened to all my Mom's albums at that point.

Janis was one of two other singers who got together & bought a tombstone for blues singer Bessie Smith who since her death in the 30s never had one. Bessie's fans sent money but her former husband who got the money squandered it. Janis Joplin was like no other. Like Otis Redding with "Sitting At the Dock of the Bay," when Janis' version of Kris Kristofferson's "Me & Bobby McGee," came out -- it became the second hit record for an artist who had already passed away. Despite this reception early in her career Janis as popular as she became always felt lonely -- and she did die alone. Just like so many other major artists. Your sadness was sincere in this video India -- good assessment as always.
